Too little too late to be honest. I think most people who have ever had interest in tf2 have moved on now.

I've spent over a thousand hours in tf2 and love it to bits but this feels like it came way too late.
TF2 is still the 3rd most popular game on Steam lol.

Even if you take out all the people idling it would still roughly be in top 10
I haven't played TF2 in about 7 months.
For the most part, TF2 stopped being fun after the Unknown Assassins custom Mario cart server I liked because it was so casual and objective-less went offline.
I still had a little fun playing 2Fort and sniping heavies from the sewers, but the community I loved was already gone after the F2P update happened.
Most of the fun casual players and servers stopped playing TF2.
I've recently thought about trying to install it on the guest computer I use at the moment, for old time's sake. Have fun headshotting machina snipers and seeing kids flip their shit.
But I don't think so.
I got into TF2 went it went F2P and my favorite server was the 2Fort2Furious 24/7
Mario Kart server, it was just fun to go on and shit around in chat and game, since no one really gave a shit on that server.
I stopped wanting to play when it went down. Everything else lacked that something that drew me to that server in the first place.
You realize those servers aren't actually in the quickplay system right?
Havent played TF2 in about 5 years, i would not know.
All i know is the servers and communites i cared about and helped run did not qualify for Quick play status because they run custom maps and have no crits / random spread. And when i ventured into quick play it was always 2Fort, much like it's Always Dust2 in csgo.
I don't know what remains, I don't care anymore either.
So wait when does it drop?

Yes, but it is also F2P and great for money-making via buying and selling microtransactions.
[editline]6th July 2016[/editline]
Where would it be on that list for $10 with not hats or anything?
I've been able to run TF2 ever since I got my new PC rig, and I played the game a ton even before I could run it well, but I'm having a hard time coming back. I just don't care as much about the game, Overwatch aside.
Overwatch doesn't have anything quite like Force-A-Nature Scout or Kritzkrieg Medic, though.

Same could be said about CS:GO with how ludicrous the item market is there
Also TF2 used to cost money and it was the biggest game on Steam in it's heyday.
I came back to TF2 since 2010 because the gameplay hasn't changed and it has no bullshit.
It's a complete non-issue, you get I think 10 drops a week and one weapon = one weapon in the trading scene. Get a drop, don't like it? Trade it for a weapon you want. Websites like scrap.tf make it even easier.
You're disregarding people who aren't savvy enough to trade weapons for other weapons, people who for reasons unknown, don't have enough inventory space, and people who don't want to go through the hassle to get every possible weapon (disregarding reskins) for every class just so they can switch to their optimal loadout for their situation.
Now, instead of jumping randomly into an in-progress game, you'll be matched into an unranked 12v12 game with players of similar skill. This means no more auto-balancing—you'll be playing a match from start to finish, with actual winners and actual losers.
Wow so let me get this straight, there's no server browser anymore? I'm forced to let a random matchmaking system tell me where to play as opposed to letting me pick from my list of servers?
Wow so let me get this straight, there's no server browser anymore? I'm forced to let a random matchmaking system tell me where to play as opposed to letting me pick from my list of servers?
That has nothing to do with the server browser. That's for the quick-play option.
did people actually want matchmaking in tf2?
I stopped playing TF2 a while ago for various reasons, but one of them was that fact that the skill gap in any given server can be massive. One game I'll easily get ten of fifteen kills without dying and another I'll be doing so horrible I look like I'm playing with my feet. I'm hoping this update will fix that and I can start actually having fun in TF2 again. At the very least, casual mode might be cool.
One other reason I stopped playing was because random crits can suck a big fat ding dong and according to the update page those are gone too fuck you random crits.
That has nothing to do with the server browser. That's for the quick-play option.
Oh good. Phew.
I remember my favorite server on TF2 was this random idle server with some awesome map. Was just fun to dick around with !rtd and just have nice casual fun. Too bad it went offline and i've never found a good replacement
It's been taking me like 5 years to collect every weapon in the game via drops.
I might still have a handful of them to go.
Guys, I think you may want to ahve a look at this:
Q: How do I get access to Competitive Mode?
A: To gain access to Competitive Mode, you must have a Premium TF2 Account and a qualifying telephone number on Steam. Examples of a telephone number that does not qualify would be a Voice Over IP number (e.g. Skype) or a number linked to a VAC-banned account. (For more information about qualifying phone numbers, please visit the Steam FAQ.)
Q: Why do I need a phone number?
A: Associating a phone number with a Steam account helps ensure a greater degree of account security and player accountability, which reduces the likelihood of cheating and abuse.
Q: What if I can't or don't want to provide a phone number?
A: If you are unable to associate a telephone number with your Steam account, you can purchase a lifetime Competitive Access Pass from the Mann Co. Store. When the Meet Your Match Update goes live, you will be able to buy the Pass at an introductory discount rate of $9.99.

Do you guys think matchmaking a feature now instead of a hindrance?
Not me. I'm not all that fond of matchmaking. It makes it impossible to have, say, a 24/7 2fort server, which is the kind of server I enjoyed playing on most when I played TF2.

They still exist
I've been in the beta for matchmaking for a while and the current version is very rough around the edges however this is a major update that will make a lot of changes to it before finally releasing it. TF2 has a very loyal competitive playerbase and I think everyone's excited for it (as well as the balance patch thats coming with it).

This will definitely discourage hacking, and trading is already an hassle without steam mobile auth so I think most people use it.
I've spent over a thousand hours in tf2 and love it to bits but this feels like it came way too late.
Only almost a decade late.
Only almost a decade late.
wow, tf2 will be 9 years old in a few months. it doesn't even feel like it came out all that long ago. 9 years before tf2 came out was the release of half life 1.

"It's almost like Valve is a completely different company."
Very convenient timing with Overwatch

There's fucking boatloads of them, and I don't think they get quickplay traffic anyway (which is good, because fuck 24/7 2fort servers), so this shouldn't affect them at all.
So they made it Overwatch.
Not until they gut the server browser, lock teams to 6v6, and knock the tickrate from 66 to 20, as well as remove loadouts and alternate weapons

Pyro should be reworked over heavy, its not even close.
Pyro should be reworked over heavy, its not even close.
Everybody is getting balances changes today. It's less "reworked" and more New items. Possibly new "subclasses" kind of like the DemoKnight.
No matter what they're going to get balanced.
Pyro should be reworked over heavy, its not even close.
They're both getting new items. The "War" is just about who gets them first. It says so on the blog.
Kind of stupid though, people were expecting actual new weapons with this update, not an announcment of an update that may come within 3 decades.
Very convenient timing with Overwatch
I've said it in the other thread, but the matchmaking stuff has been in development before Overwatch was announced officially.
So does anyone know when this patch will launch?
