We don't know if they've ditched UMDs or not. Nothing official has been revealed.
I never liked UMDs (they're loud and slow, and moving parts aren't really a great idea for a handheld gaming device), but it'd be nice to have the slot for backwards compatibility.

i have a psp 1000 and a psp 3000, and i use them both a lot
This is dumb, no umd's? PSP go all over again.

UMD's were and are still fucking awful
they broke like that, loaded ass slow, and were very expensive

Not bad. I'm kind of annoyed that it's being released so late though (Holidays 2011,) as I had money saved up to buy it. Seeing as it will have 3G data and good specs, I'm starting to have doubts that this device will sell for anything under 350 dollars.
I currently have 250 dollars. The 3DS is 250 dollars. Oh well.
