The president of railway firm Renfe, Julio Gomez Pomar, was quoted by El Mundo newspaper as saying the driver, who was aged 52, had 30 years of experience with the company and had been operating trains on the line for more than a year.
He said the train which derailed had no technical problems.
Oh fuck, any news on why he was going that fast then?
The security cameras captured the moment of the accident, basically the train was going too fast and derailed after one of the wagons couldn't handle the curve at that speed and dragged the rest of the train into the concrete. Also, the huge motor of the train got expelled after the crash.
Edit: Here it is.

I saw this video before I saw the news, and I said "holy shit, that looks brutal"
And then I read the news and realised just how brutal it was ):

Supposedly he posted pictures on his facebook account, bragging about going almost 200 km/h.
Seems like a bad case of misconduct.

Yeah just saw it on the news here and they did state that the driver posted a picture of the speedometer and bragged about it.
How the fuck did he think this was a good idea.
Honestly holy fucking shit guys, that facebook thing reeks of fake.
I feel bad for the driver too. The fact that he has to live with so many dead lives on him is just devastating.

Not if he was deliberatly driving that fast and bragging about it.
Of course it will hunt him forever, and the fact that he just ruined his life too.
This exact thing happened in Japan, albeit in a different context. Young Japanese train driver overshoots a landing platform and takes an extra 5 minutes to back it up onto the correct position. Afraid of missing schedule and being reprimanded, he decides to speed the train up between a few of the cities on the route. He takes a new, sharp turn that hasn't got a functioning speed warning bell yet at a speed far exceding the limit and derails in the exact same way.

Don't the Japanese trains run on a schedule like you wouldn't believe? It's something like +/- 10 seconds from arrival times, always. I could see the worry about being 5 minutes late

I can tell you from personal experience that it's strange when the trains are over a minute late here

Yeah, that's the reason. The driver in particular had been sent to "reform school" which was just a bunch of harassment around a month prior and was afraid of it happening again.

So if you're in Japan and happen to be riding a JR West train....just be aware of who you're giving your money to, I guess.
