Pool party goes terrible wrong as the organizers decided pouring LIQUID NITROGEN in the pool is a go

This is what throwing a bucket of liquid nitrogen into a swimming pool looks like.
More of basic physics, there was no chemical reaction going on, just physical ones.
Still, yeah.
Meh, chemistry is just applied physics. Not much of a difference in this case.
if this was lan party filled with intellectual sophisticated people instead nothing this stupid would have happened
heh *snort
Christ that's a terrible idea; they're lucky no-one got snapped in half.
That would never happen unless they were immersed in a vat of liquid nitrogen.
They were throwing this stuff onto a pool in the Mexican summer. This stuff is boiling essentially the moment it is out of the container. Not to mention they are sitting in a rather large pool of water which would make sure that their body temperature would not suddenly drop hundreds of degrees.
Water is very good at moderating temperatures. For every degree the water cools, the (liquid) N2 warms 4 degrees.
How the fuck did they even manage to get that much liquid nitrogen? Don't you need some sort of permit or permission to use that amount?
They should have used liquid oxygen instead.

You can see that a bubble forms under the LN2 when it hits the water because its boiling on contact. So you've got a highly mobile object between two dense objects being squeezed by gravity. And then the gas jets outwards taking the LN2 with it.
I wouldn't expect some random party organizers to know basic chemistry
The place they got the liquid nitrogen from probably has the knowlege but they had no idea what these guys were going to use it for
Yeah but they must've known absolutely anything that involved liquid nitrogen and people exposed to it never ends well one way or another

Well, really all this is applied math.
Alcohol * (Dumb people + Liquid Nitrogen) = Danger

My god i remember my friend was overclocking his PC and he managed to splash some of the stuff on his skin.
NSFW, not that heavy but fuck that shit was nasty.
Fun is more vital than oxygen apparently. Anyone in the pool is going to have only their head out of the water, and the nitrogen is going to sit on top of the water and displace the oxygen.
Who needs oxygen when you have swag?
Who needs oxygen when you have swag?
Or a coma and possibly brain damage? :v:

#YOLO, TYSIA.
Tysia actually sounds like some sort of Middle Eastern country.
it be nice to have something of a "liquid nitrogen fountain" display, i just love seeing the mist that liquid nitrogen produces.
i want to try this
That isn't so much chemistry as basic gas physics. Cold gas settles to the bottom, warm gas rises.

N2, liquid or otherwise, does not react with chlorinated water at STP :v:
Holy shit, that article is so wrong it's funny.
Half of me wants to spout out how massively idiotic these people are, and half of me wants to feel sorry for them for this happening, even though they brought it upon themselves.
I'll just settle with the fair statement that they're all dumb-asses, and I feel sorry for them.

I have a sudden urge to touch those things
Oh god who even thinks it's a good idea to breathe chemical clouds.
You breathe in that same chemical every second. The only difference is, normally it's not the only thing you breathe in, there's usually a tiny bit of oxygen along with it to allow you to keep living.
Oh c'mon! Everyone knows what liquid nitrogen does!
Oh god who even thinks it's a good idea to breathe chemical clouds.
Wow! Golly, you're right! In fact, you should go ahead and stop breathing chemical clouds, just to be safe. After all, it's a bad idea, right?
They should have used liquid oxygen instead.
You dont want to breathe 100% oxygen either.
You should probably just use liquid air.
Ah, liquid nitrogen, so many fun things you can do with it.
I like how it's known as "kväve" in Swedish, basically meaning "suffocate-y"

Liquid nitrogen shouldn't do much at all unless you are unlucky. Leidenfrost effect should make it pretty innocuous (I've poured some on my hand, felt cold but that was it).
Though if it hits with force, it probably will get through the bubble and hurt.
There is a reason that the rough translation of nitrogen when translated from dutch is "suffocation chemical" (stikstof)
Stikstof would be a great name for an industrial metal album
Something thought adding some boost to the party was a good idea.
I find it hilarious that the only people dumb enough to do this are the same people that go to pool parties.
I find it hilarious that the only people dumb enough to actually kill their parents when they temporarily take away their trivial positions are gamers.

mexico:land of the non-regulated
next time get a fucking fog machine, your lungs will thank you (but not by much as some big ones can still do this to you)

I went in a lab on a physics open day in the University of Birmingham, and the guy researching very cold stuff, threw some at us as we where leaving, so long as it didn't pool it was fine.
