I wanted to be an engineer..... Instead I'm stocking store shelves for the rest of my life.
Student loans?
Lenin was right all along
I think once we get to high school we should be able to do are schooling on what we will be in life. So we can work more on the career we want to do other then learning all around things.
I think you need to go back to English. There's a reason kids don't manage their own curriculums.
Yeah, it is fucking ridiculous. You're literally stuck unless you wish to take an ass ton of debt from student loans. (I personally would like to earn a masters or PHD in my field)
In Medieval days, you rented your farm from your lord and were indebted to him, unable to get ahead, stuck working the land as a peasant. Nowadays, you rent your education from the bank and you know the rest. It just absolutely blows my mind to think that this country is nearing one trillion dollars in spending per year for the DOD, and meanwhile everyone in the country is getting fucked because they have no money.
I think I'm fucked, i was planning on studying medicine, but it takes an insane ATAR to get into any decent uni, but hopefully i can pull the grades and pull out of the dying middle class and into the cushy upper class.
The way I see it, taxes these days are an equivalent to tickets to a fair. All you've purchased is the right to enter. Everything that isn't an extremely basic human right (restrooms and roads) still has to be paid for. I suppose that's how it's been for a very long time anyway.
Yeah it is like that and it's really bad, for a citizen atleast. I'd really love if the system changed for better, but I guess that's not going to happen anytime in my lifetime if at all. Also what defines as middle class job? Is it like sitting in an office or a desk job? If so, there's quite a demand for it, like programming and such. I wouldn't call programming a lower or upper class job.

I don't know whatever major you're in, but you might want to look around for some special Ph.D. programs, Iowa State is really good for my major and pays for my first year + most of the other 3 if I become a teachers assistant.
Good read. Thanks for sharing.
That's not the point at all, the point is that decent-paying jobs that didn't require a lot of education have all been phased out and sent overseas.
I mentioned the end result. You mentioned the cause. We're saying the same thing - you need an education to get a decent job anymore.
Hooray for being a middle class white guy, too poor for a university, too rich for financial aid!
Move to the state of Georgia, after a year you can qualify for HOPE Scholarship if you keep a 3.5 average. The state covers Tuition and some books. I had it for quite a while until I moved here to Greece.
Well, good thing we have a good education system over here.
Hooray for being a middle class white guy, too poor for a university, too rich for financial aid!
Ugh, yes, only reason I didn't go to MIT or Harvard back when I looked for Universities was because no way to pay for it, yet when looking for a job that requires a qualification, they care a lot about what University you studied at. /sigh C'est la vie.
There used to be a time where you could bust your butt all day on a production line straight out of high school and in a few years earn enough to be able to afford a reasonably sized house. A university degree was reserved for the folks who either wanted more or really enjoyed learning. Now, production line jobs have pretty much all dried up and equivalent jobs will pay barely enough to make ends meet. University grads are stuck either without a job or working at a fast food restaurant to pay off their $50k+ in student loans. The world is fucked, so do whatever
Actually jobs like machinists are highly sought after here in Europe and you can start out at a middle position straight out of school. this is just one example for one field of work though
Hooray for being a middle class white guy, too poor for a university, too rich for financial aid!
Oh god I know that feel, going to some shitty community college, all the rich kids get in to nice schools without giving up much (duh they're rich), the poor get in either free or very low cost, the middle class get jack nothing. And lots of jobs are being replaced by robots, or corporate America is finding a way to be more efficient, aka kill off jobs.
Hasn't it already been proven we are getting smarter? Its the fact that we keep readjusting the scores so they stay the same because its nessesary?
I don't like how some jobs require college despite college having nothing to do with them. I checked with the police department once, they wanted 2 years of college. Just college, it didn't matter what class. What's the point of that? So taking an economics class for 2 years somehow makes you more eligible than if you hadn't?
cops should have a year of law and ethics; at most.
Well that would make sense, yes. But they were asking for just 2 years college, any class, as long as you went you were eligible.
Well that would make sense, yes. But they were asking for just 2 years college, any class, as long as you went you were eligible.
yeah, and that's silly. my post was more of a "best possible scenario".
Get a science degree. Even just a bachelors in engineering or computer science will get you a job making a minimum of 50k a year.
Well that would make sense, yes. But they were asking for just 2 years college, any class, as long as you went you were eligible.
The point of college is to educate you over all as well as in a certain field. They want you to have a wider scope of knowledge of the world in general. If college was made just to train you in a very specific field, it would be a trade school. That's why, despite being a history major, I'm required to take a science elective. My career has nothing to do with science, but they want me to have at least some basic, well rounded knowledge of the subject.
I am really happy that education in Norway is free. Why should you even have to pay for an education? I really dont see how being uneducated helps anyone.
I am really happy that education in Norway is free. Why should you even have to pay for an education? Can't rule when everyone's on equal terms. And so, humanity's progress forward is slowed. /sigh
I am really happy that education in Norway is free. Why should you even have to pay for an education? I really dont see how being uneducated helps anyone.
But here in America, colleges are just businesses. America's all just businesses left and right.
Didn't plan on being happy today anyway..
Hasn't it already been proven we are getting smarter? Its the fact that we keep readjusting the scores so they stay the same because its nessesary?
doesn't help in terms of job competition when everyone else is getting smarter at the same time
We should make robots to take all the jobs and then live in a communistish society where everyone is equal and gets life handed to them on a robotic plate.
Also a similar thing is happening here in the UK, what with tuition fees being effectively tripled. I predict a massive brain drain of British and American students choosing to study in European institutions simply because it's cheaper. I'm seriously considering moving to Germany once I finish Sixth Form. I hate how unlike the proles in 1984, our "proles" actually defend the top 1%. We argue how it would be unjust to tax the rich, or how we are punishing success blah blah. I mean the 1984 proles knew they were messed up, but they just didn't do nothing. Here we got those typical white Republican kids in class who kiss rich executive's asses and you know they think they'll end up all rich, but they won't. [editline]1st December 2011[/editline] Basically lots of people think they are just temporarily not millionaires, so they are against bigger taxes since they don't wanna "enter richhood with taxes".
My dad is a manager at a grocery store. If he were to lose his job, we'd be fucked. He didn't go to college, back then there wasn't a need to. He's been working there for 29 years (he'll be 46 next month) and yet there are 20-some year olds, fresh out of college with no experience, and they are hired as my father's supervisor or some shit. Experience should count as well as education. Knowing what you're doing is better than having a piece of paper that says you are qualified in underwater basket weaving.
