• Middle class jobs gone forever; Education may be part of the problem
My dad is a manager at a grocery store. If he were to lose his job, we'd be fucked. He didn't go to college, back then there wasn't a need to. He's been working there for 29 years (he'll be 46 next month) and yet there are 20-some year olds, fresh out of college with no experience, and they are hired as my father's supervisor or some shit. Experience should count as well as education. Knowing what you're doing is better than having a piece of paper that says you are qualified in underwater basket weaving.
I don't mean to insult your father or anything but maybe he should push for a promotion or something more, maybe the young-uns are just more ambitious or something.

Even a small Associates Degree from a community college can go a long way, these days.

The guy does other people's jobs sometimes (cleans the bathroom, stocks shelves) and takes shit from so many people. He also beat a shoplifter into a pulp and came home from work with a bloody shirt. He pretty much deserves a promotion. [editline]1st December 2011[/editline]
And possibly take night courses as well. If we had more money and if he had more time he might do that. We're scraping by as it is.

Unless you absolutely in no way cannot spare a single dime. In that case, you have my sympathies.

buy a degree if it's good enough for state department employees, if good enough for you
These are exactly the sort of problems having robots to do all the jobs would fix.
You mean like stocking shelves and doing janitorial duty? True but those are jobs that people could use.
He also beat a shoplifter into a pulp and came home from work with a bloody shirt.
eww why did he do that
You mean like stocking shelves and doing janitorial duty? True but those are jobs that people could use.
why not just pay people a minimal wage without forcing them to do work that is inefficient and worthless
Hooray for being a middle class white guy, too poor for a university, too rich for financial aid!
why does the race matters
Does America have a different definition of middle class? Middle class and mid-skill employment are completely different things to me
why does the race matters
You can get financial aid for being a minority sometimes
You can get financial aid for being a minority sometimes
rarely. the competition is incredibly big.
Be a doctor, manager, or psychologist. You'll always have work! Glad I picked the last one for a career - now when all you suckers are depressed about not having a job, I'll be there to support yo- Wait, what do you mean the market is saturated? Fuck.
You can get financial aid for being a minority sometimes
poor white people ;(
There's a simple solution to this: make public high schools less of a joke. High school is bullshit and employers know it. If a high school education actually meant something, employers would hire more high school graduates and not going to college would become a more viable option. Then, as a result of decreased demand, colleges would be forced to lower tuition. Trouble is, how do you reform a system that's been in place for decades? Especially considering that a lot of schools can't even afford to run the lights in the goddamn cafeteria.
I am really happy that education in Norway is free. Why should you even have to pay for an education? I really dont see how being uneducated helps anyone.
Norway sounds like a fucking wonderful country.
why does the race matters
The article specifically mentions that poor white men are getting hit hardest.
probably because black people are always getting fucked so the recession didn't change anything. hahha i miss dave chappelle
I am really happy that education in Norway is free. Why should you even have to pay for an education? I really dont see how being uneducated helps anyone.
This is about North America, I'm going to have to kindly ask you to remove all common sense from the thread.
America, just be glad that you don't have the prices of Australia. Your incredibly cheap stuff is the only reason your economy hasn't completely plummeted into a bottomless pit by now.
I know I'm going to get flamed with "dumbs" for this, but I think more extreme measures need to be taken. The rich pay off our politicians and support their re-election campaigns so the politicians don't can them with policies and restrictions. And even if that wasn't happening, both of our political parties are always having massive dick-comparing competitions, so they can't focus on helping us. If we could just get 1 good politician in the government, maybe it would help. But the words "good" and politician just don't mix, and nobody would take him seriously even if he had all of the middle class on his side. Meanwhile, I'm stuck not knowing what to do when I get to fucking college. My family is middle class, but college prices are so buttfuck insane that I'm afraid that a good, non-community college is just not a reasonable prospect for me or my brother. But really, something needs to be done, and we are the ones who need to do it. This "occupy" shit isn't going to help. To the government, the occupy people are just a bunch of fucking hippies that gather in the cities and shout at them. They don't care as all the politicians have to do is drown them out. (or start fucking pepper-spraying people) Meanwhile, this situation is only amplified worse in overseas countries. China also has this happening. The government there is practically swimming in money, yet the populace is living in the shitter. My point is, we need to do something drastic. Nothing violent, as that would just make everything 10 times worse, but we need to show our government we are really, really not fucking around and that we will fight if it comes to that. One of my friends was training pilots for your airforce, and he would send me emails always talking about the absurd prices. Once he found a burger over there that was equivalent to 20 USD!
Actually, to explain why more females are signing up for college is because of how teachers are taught to engage students. The handbooks haven't been changed that much since the 80's during the big push to support girls more in classrooms. What ended up happening is that more and more girls became interested in learning but they never reset it so both sides go equal encouragement. So boys at a young age are left to be uninterested and this just grows into a massive problem later on because it continues up to and including highschool. Its gotten to the point that even some very staunch feminists have raised up this problem.
Norway sounds like a fucking wonderful country.
Just realize that one drink will cost more than all your yearly wages
Doesn't the government finance US universities at least one tiny bit hooray for free uni here i guess
Varies on where you live. Here in Georgia, if you're poor AND have decent grades, you can get into a good public university for practically nothing.

Smell ya later suckers
Just because the unemployment rate is 0.0% doesn't mean you have a guaranteed job. It's kinda funny really, I've seen so many people convinced that they'll have a job straight out of college/uni.

this all makes me happy that my greatest aspiration is penniless writer, I'm not trying to be successful financially so I don't even give a shit about this
