It isn't specific enough but it said that one of the rafts were flipped over on the conveyor, so if that's the raft we're talking about then the belt had to have been travelling backwards in that moment.
It couldn't have flipped over before reaching it because then they would have had the time to swim or grab hold of something and keep away from anything dangerous--but then if the belt had been travelling backwards it had to have been a sudden switch in direction just as the raft was coming in...?

Might be the same type of ride but the belt on the other one has far larger gaps that people could easily fall through judging by the images.
Yes I agree, that it part of what I was trying to say.
Busch Gardens in Tampa has the same sort of ride but it actually has a rubber belt that carries the rafts
Strange I didn't pick this up in any other media. Doesn't 4 deaths make this one of the deadliest theme park accidents ever?
First off, yes, it does. If it didn't we wouldn't have any kind of vintage car culture or even old appliances laying around, because they'd be illegal, because they're kind of impossible to update to modern safety standards.
Vintage cars are the outlier, and have specific regulations for themselves. Appliances are sold to consumers, not offered as a service like a rollercoaster. Agents aren't going to come knocking on your door because you have a microwave from the 90s that isn't compliant with modern standards. They will, however, come knocking on your door if you are a company selling a product or providing a service that is not compliant with modern safety standards and does not have an exemption. Often times, old products are not compliant and are either updated to newer models that are compliant, or stop production and distribution entirely for that model.
Regulations vary from market to market and region to region, but that is generally how it works.
Been on this ride tons of times and its disturbing to think my mates and myself were rocking this thing from side to side so it would smash into the sides more...

From The Australian, not sure how accurate it is:
Two children aged 10 and 12 watched their mothers die along with two men after their raft struck another raft on the Thunder River Rapids Ride at about 2.30pm (AEST).
The victims have been named as Luke Dorsett, Mr Dorsett’s partner Roozi Araghi, Mr Dorsett’s sister Kate Goodchild and New Zealander Cindy Low. Police have appealed for witnesses.
God those poor kids, seeing their mother die right in front of them.
I don't think there's anything wrong with the design, it's been used for decades and this is the first time something bad has happened with it. (This type of ride is all over the place, Opryland had one even) and it looks like as the raft was approaching the conveyor the forward part somehow got pinched, causing the 'back' to come up acting as a catapult. I don't know how that could happen unless the conveyor was for some reason moving backwards. (Operator error, maybe?) Also, safety belts would have saved their lives, but strapping people into something on a water ride has its own safety risks. Opryland's didn't have safety harnesses for this exact ride if I recall
As you can see from the photos, they didn't put enough slats in and the seats are too low. It' not so much the ride as Dreamworld's unsafe implementation.

Compare it to similar rides at other parks:

That elevator chain looks like the machine used to grind up beef
What an unbelievably shitty way to go, good grief. My condolences to the families.
