Superior is subjective. Only humans can decide what's superior to what. It can't be measured unless a measurable definition is agreed upon.
I don't think we should be worrying about the hamster in this case though. At all. It's the guy who we should be hoping gets some psychiatric help. I mean, regardless of the morality of microwaving a hamster, it is pretty fucked up.

It was probably dead within a few seconds of the microwave being turned on, it didn't suffer as much as everyone seems to think.

Well, I think everyone would be a hypocrite to be against so called "animal torture". Most of our modern medicine was pioneered through the use of animal test subjects. Specifically the rat, the hamster's estranged cousin.
And to answer the second part of your question, yes, I do believe it doesnt matter because it's not human. But it doesnt have to be human, it just has to be on a higher level of intelligence, including self awareness, the ability to make art, use tools, etc... I make my guidelines pretty clear.
