I think I need to see Aliens. I have not seen such a hate for movies in a series as much as Alien fans talk of 3 & 4, and I kind of felt underwhelmed by the first one. Maybe Aliens is the sweet spot in the series?

Totally apples and oranges, both great in their own ways. Definitely see Aliens even if Alien wasn't really to your taste.
I'm a huge fan of Michael Biehn in Aliens and Terminator, but at the same time, it's been almost thirty years. After seeing what happened to Indiana Jones and the Terminator franchise, I'm skeptical of any studio bringing back aging actors to try to continue a franchise that peaked decades ago.
i'm not sure that's a completely accurate comparison with Indiana Jones, a lot of the problems with that were caused by Spielberg getting too mild to kill truckloads of nazis and tell George Lucas when his ideas were bad, that plus a pure escapist character like Indie getting old made for a crappy movie. this film can definitely still be as bad Kingdom of the Crystal Skull but it has a skilled fresh-blooded director behind it, no ideas guys like Lucas, and the stars can actually be over 40 years old and still have them be cool. Alien has not got nearly as many nails in the coffin as Indie did
So if they're not trying to undo 3, Ressurection, and I'm assuming Colonial Marines, what the fuck is going to happen? This is going to have to really good just so the confusing mess of a story won't bring the movie down.

A major kick in the bollocks for the fans.

Hell yeah, Michael Biehn is one of my favorite 80s action dudes. I haven't seen many of his movies (just the big ones: Terminator, Aliens, Tombstone, Grease) but I've thoroughly enjoyed his performances in them. And I've got a framed print of that Blood Dragon poster. Also saw him talk at a convention last year, he seems like a really neat guy. He talked about how he doesn't do many big movies these days (because he doesn't have to do stuff for paychecks) but has tried his hand at making low-budget independent stuff (inspired by working with Rodriguez on Planet Terror). It'd be great to see him as Hicks again.

It goes into a lot of detail about Fincher's work conditions and the INSANE amount of bullshit he was putting up with from the suits at Fox and the production company. Entire sets were built & never filmed in, chunks of the script being re-written at the last minute during crucial times in filming, I remember there being one moment where they didn't allow him to shoot a certain scene because it was either too expensive or they just didn't like it and he said "fuck it", grabbed Sigourney and filmed anyway. I understand why he didn't return for commentary or behind the scenes stuff. Assembly cut is the way to go for it. the picture & audio can be wonky at times because it was rough cut stuff that never got polished for the theatrical release, but the story and certain situations in the plot make a lot more sense. After watching the featurette I was shocked the film got released at all.
They fixed up quite a bit for the Blu Ray release.

Maybe when they wake up they are on a planet and Newt is no where to be seen on the ship and then go off to look for her. Then Aliens occur. Or something. I have faith they won't totally balls it up. Maybe slightly...
Might just be me but I'm sure that 20th century fox will tell Neil he can't do this or that and turn the new alien movie into something like Prometheus... Because apparently they don't like directors to make their movies great Bringing back mothafuckin dwayne AKA "handy for close encounters" hicks though is awesome
Now I'll have to buy the Alien Quintilogy and look like an even bigger dork!
