Cool. Anyone know if they will broadcast it live or where I can hear it right after they vote?
Our local news radio and TV is slow to pick up on breaking news.
I have no prior experience but this website appears to have it on the schedule (Channel 3)
I'm watching the al jazeera webcast, and I'm probably out of the loop wondering why there are reporters in Tripoli. I'm guessing they've let them in for a while just for propaganda?
This isn't something you sit back and enjoy watching. It's people being killed, asshole.
If it goes as I hope it does, the majority getting killed will be gaddafi loyalists. We could do with less(none) of them in the world.
Also I was wrong on the UTC/GMT time because of Daylight Savings Time... it's usually a 5-hour gap but now it's 4.
If the resolution doesn't pass desks across the world will be damaged from direct fist and head impacts
Russia and China proposed their own alternative to the no-fly zone - a resolution calling for a ceasefire.
Why are they always so hilariously antagonistic about everything up until the last second.
Like Vietnam amirite?
lol because well entrenched guerilla forces = standing military structure amirite
everything is like vietnam, all enemies are indestructable, even when everyone is on your side
And again, the German government is against it.
Vote me next time!
Draft resolution excerpt:
Demands the immediate establishment of a ceasefire and a complete end to violence and all attacks against, and abuses of, civilians;
"Stresses the need to intensify efforts to find a solution to the crisis which responds to the legitimate demands of the Libyan people and notes the decisions of the Secretary-General to send his Special Envoy to Libya and of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union to send its ad hoc High Level Committee to Libya with the aim of facilitating dialogue to lead to the political reforms necessary to find a peaceful and sustainable solution;
"Demands that the Libyan authorities comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, human rights and refugee law and take all measures to protect civilians and meet their basic needs, and to ensure the rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian assistance;
"Authorises member states ... to take all necessary measures ... to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, including Benghazi, while excluding a foreign
occupation force of any form on any part of Libyan territory...;
"Decides to establish a ban on all flights in the airspace of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya in order to help protect civilians;
"Calls upon all member states, acting nationally or through regional organisations or arrangements, to provide assistance, including any necessary over-flight approvals, for the purposes of implementing" the no-fly zone.
"Calls upon all member states, in particular states of the region, acting nationally or through regional organisations or arrangements, in order to ensure strict implementation of the arms embargo established (by Resolution 1970) to inspect in their territory, including seaports and airports, and on the high seas, vessels and aircraft bound to or from the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya...
"Deplores the continuing flows of mercenaries into the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and calls upon all member states to comply strictly with their obligations under (Resolution 1970) to prevent the supply of armed mercenary personnel to the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya;
"Decides that all states shall deny permission to any aircraft registered in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya or owned or operated by Libyan nationals or companies to take off from, land in or overfly their territory
unless the particular flight has been approved in advance by the Committee, or in the case of an emergency landing;
"Decides that all States shall deny permission to any aircraft to take off from, land in or overfly their territory, if they have information that provides reasonable grounds to believe that the aircraft contains items the
supply, sale, transfer, or export of which is prohibited ... including the provision of armed mercenary personnel, except in the case of an emergency landing;
"Decides that the asset freeze imposed by (Resolution 1970) shall apply to all funds, other financial assets and economic resources which are on their territories, which are owned or controlled, directly or indirectly, by the Libyan authorities ... or by individuals or entities acting on their behalf or at their direction...
"Affirms its determination to ensure that assets frozen pursuant to (Resolution 1970) shall, at a later stage, as soon as possible be made available to and for the benefit of the people of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya."
Yeah haha well DST was only last weekend, so I had no idea that the gap closed. I'm always so used to saying "Okay well it's noon here, 5PM there".
There is no clean up operation, all they're doing is making sure the rebels win with air support. The UN will help out with getting back on it's feet but the US won't have anything to do with it outside of the UN
This. It's also important to note that Russia and China are expected to abstain. In other words, it's to the point where they're not totally against it.

Holy shit, I heard whispers of this being included when writing the OP but I thought probably not. This is more than a no-fly zone: this would authorise NATO to directly attack Gaddafi's military when they assault Benghazi.
It's a big fucking risk to take though, the whole resolution could go down because of it

Worth the risk I say.

Yeah we should just give him some space, Let him talk about his feelings.
I'm giddy with excitement (that sounds bad concerning the situation I'm excited about is war). History could be made here! In 15 minutes!
I really hope if Russia and China want to make a point over this they just abstain for the sake of the people in Libya.
Failing that, I wouldn't mind the US / UK / France saying "lol fuck you" to the UN. Although that would make the entire thing illegal, at least something would be done.
I REALLY hope that it doesn't get vetoed by China or Russia, because as you know they like to change their minds often.

I suspect there's been some negotiations going on. Watch the US suddenly have some really good trade deals with them or something.
UTC = GMT?
Hour and 15 mins, its only quarter to 9.

UTC converted to EST is -5. 10 UTC-5= 5pm EST, which is in 11 minutes.
Am i wrong?
Utc = gmt?
I was confused too. It's only a 4 hour gap now because of Daylight Savings Time.
Detective, it is 5PM EST here (almost), but we're really GMT -4 because of DST.
I've updated the OP, and I want to make it clear to everyone who's already here: It turns out this resolution actually authorises not only a no-fly zone, but "all necessary means ... excluding a foreign occupation force" to protect civilian populated areas "including Benghazi", meaning that NATO could attack Gaddafi's ground forces once they make a move for Benghazi, or even beforehand if they attack another "civilian populated area".

UTC = GMT = WET = Some other stuff.
I'm sitting looking at my clock and it's saying 20:49.
I hate timezones, we need some universal shit.

If it fails due to this segment I hope the UK/France/Lebanon have an amended version to hand to try and push through.
On the mention of Lebanon its worth noting that they currently represent the middle east on the UNSC and they support the resolution.

Gaddafi did an interview with RTP, a Portuguese television station, this evening. In it, he said:
"The Security Council has not got the right to interfere in the internal affairs of any state. It would be a flagrant colonisation, without any justification. A serious and grave [inaudible]. This is craziness, madness, arrogance. If the world gets crazy with us, we will get crazy too..."
Asked what he means by 'get crazy', Gaddafi said:
"We will respond. We will make their lives hell, because they are making our lives hell. They will never have peace."

I'm quite excited, me.
