Over 3,200 US prisoners serving life sentences for non-violent offenses including shoplifting

That's fucking harsh.
While they should have at least tried to keep to the straight and narrow, a life sentence for nonviolent crime doesn't fit the crime committed or the gravity of the offense in question.
But as far as premeditated, planned killings go, a life sentence has to personally be the minimum punishment. Manslaughter may be considered for a lesser sentence than that, but premeditated killings don't deserve that kind of leniency. I'd still hold out the possibility of parole even then after a fair amount of time for good behavior, but if they get caught in the act of premeditated murder again, the only thing they deserve is the one last dance on air that all of their kind ought to get.

Louisiana is a fucked up place. DOJ had taken over a few of their agencies too because of corruption.

No surprises here on where they're all sentenced.[/QUOTE]
muh states rights (to imprison me for life without parole for stealing a jacket).
I have the feeling that they were probably repeat offenders who had a history of commiting crime. The punishment is absurd nonetheless though, it's ineffective to detering criminals and it also encourages them to become more discreet.
The US has a draconian justice system with little to no emphasis on reforming offenders. I'm surprised there aren't significantly more than 3,200

well if you include the people who have 25+ year sentences and people who will most likely die in prison due to age it probably would be much, much more. We're talking about non-violent offenders here, you know people who didn't hurt literally anyone. The only place that I waver on that is when it's something like retirement investment scams. That ruins peoples lives to a point that they have no feasible way of getting back.
