Belgium – As reported to ECDC by Belgian authorities, on 2 September 2014, following a human error, 45 litres of concentrated live polio virus solution were released into the environment by the pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), in Rixensart city, Belgium. The liquid was conducted directly to a water-treatment plant (Rosieres) and released after treatment in river Lasne affluent of river Dyle which is affluent of the Escaut/Scheldt river. Belgium’s High Council of Public Health conducted a risk assessment that concluded that the risk of infection for the population exposed to the contaminated water is extremely low due to the high level of dilution and the high vaccination coverage (95%) in Belgium.
ECDC’s assessment is that the accidental release in the environment of large amounts of live polio virus represents a risk to public health if susceptible populations, such as areas with low polio vaccine coverage, are exposed to contaminated waters or mud. Particularly since the Lasne and Dyle rivers are joining the Escaut/Scheldt river which flows in the southwestern part of the Netherlands where various orthodox protestant communities present a lower polio vaccination coverage, before reaching the North Sea.
Will they get fined for this?
They mix in so many chemicals in the water treatment that not even concentrated polio survives in it.

They better be.
Why do they even have 45 liters of concentrated polio virus? I get that you store maybe a little sample of it in case it could be useful for the future, but 45 liters?
How do you make a mistake like that?

Vaccine prep cultures. They're used for the live attenuated vaccine.
i bet anti-vaccers in belgium are feeling extra stupid right about now

Could go either way really. the whole reason for the release is that it was being stockpiled... to make vaccines

Should I be worried?

It says it was released in the Escaut, an affluent of which goes through my town, downstream. I think I should be worried.

Have you taken the vaccine against Polio?

it was nice knowing you

Damn, I don't think so. Okay, now it's serious.

Even if you're not vaccinated, you're really unlikely to catch it like that unless you've got some kind of condition that makes you more vulnerable to it.

I've actually got a strong immune system, your post gives me more hope.

Plus even if you do get sick, you'll probably just get a fever and puke a lot, it's pretty rare for polio to paralyse a healthy person.
I wonder what that would taste like.

Cherry flavored medicine
You think that's scary we have a company called Allergan with samples of Botox in a town next to ours for cosmetics. One leak of that shit and that's the end of the town, it's a fucking bio-weapon.

Are you kidding me? Boldness like this is upper management material.
Polio is horrible, atleast pretty much everyone is vaccinated towards it. My grandmother suffered from polio as a child in the 50's and seeing her suffering today with PPS is heartbreaking.
I'm not saying they did it on purpose to make profit, that's bollix, but it might help encourage people to get vaccinated in future.
It was a happy accident.

There's people at risk, this is NOT a happy accident at all.

I'm just looking on the bright side. No point being sad at everything just because there's horrors involved.

I never knew there could be a "bright side" to spilling 45 liters of a live virus into the waterways.
Just like.. How do you fuck up so bad?
I just...I don't even get how that could happen. 45 liters is a TON of polio virus! Who the fuck just dumps it in a river?
