The games might be P2P, but there is a master server required to actually tell your P2P client who's available to connect to. You can't just send a request out to every machine on the Internet to ask "hey bruh, wanna play MW3???".
With the traffic that PSN and Live see, I expect their download server bills are pretty hefty, along with the ever increasing number of master servers needed to be run (though these aren't monstrously demanding to run). The service could be cheaper, especially since it's basically mandatory now.
Sony hosts the PSN. Thats it. Matchmaking might be included in that, but for example Steam is free and does the same, so...
They don't host the servers that other game developers use.
server infrastructure is expensive as heck especially if you're running globally

valve can afford to do it for free because they have an infinite source of money (dota 2)

except microsoft gives away good games and the 360 copies are allowed to be kept even if you cancel. The 360 copies are also backwards compatible as a requirement for XB1.
you get 2 xb1 and 2 360 games per month.
i mean this month has beyond good and evil hd, spelunky, and wwe 2k16 (fun for making silly characters and fighting them to the death.)
thats worth the 60$ this month alone.
here's the entire list that people got:

360 live users can also redeem the xb1 games if they dont have a xb1 and build their library up so when they get a xb1 they will have a ton of games to play on the xb1. this increases the value of the xb1 to that person.

Why would they when Sony legitimized the move with the PS4, and on top of that outsold them? Obviously the monthly fee wasn't the issue.
I mean sure, I'd be very happy if they did (not that I own a console), but it's not like they make money on the hardware, so it'd be pretty dumb to throw away what is basically pure profit.
I got a year for $40 last year but i haven't renewed after my 3 months expired. I dont play Multiplayer much.

You do realize that Sony makes money off of all purchases just like Steam, right?
Considering Playstation is the only part of Sony that can turn a profit it doesn't surprise me that they're trying to squeeze as much money out of it as they can. It's a short sighted move though, by increasing the price and having worse PS+ games they're going to drive people away from subscribing to PS+.

valve can put some immortal dota 2 item up for sale for a limited time and make a gorillion dollars in an hour
I fucking hate being a canadian console gamer
I really enjoy paying 90 bucks for new games and then having to pay 60$ to play them online

I have a PS4 solely for Bloodborne and Metal Gear Solid V but these days it looks every day like upgrading a PC would be a much smarter option
Games for gold started off as shit, and now blows PS+ out of the water, it's disgusting
Good point, but i'm pretty sure, both Microsoft and Sony have enough money for servers.
Sony doesn't have enough money for a grilled cheese sandwich, everything outside of their Playstation division is a burning dumpster fire.
This is around the price I'm paying for ps plus here, welcome to European prices Americans.
What makes you think it won't rise to around $70 for you?
I mean it's not listed, but if they go "well, we got away with it in the U.S. and Canada we can probably raise it everywhere else, too"

Ontopic the XBone is getting more and more appealing. They were already at this price, so that's another one of Sony's advantages gone.
The Xbone has limited backwards compatibility, the slim got rid of the power adapter thing, the Elite controller has only gotten glowing reviews from everyone, if you want to customize your controller you can do that from the website before ordering, the games they offer for free are actually good, download speeds are fucking quickfast, you've got "XBox play anwhere" for a selection of games, etc.
Meanwhile on the PS4 end you're either re-buying or renting previous console purchases, there's no real neat controller shit, the games are indie or total shit, and you can't play any of your PS4 games on PC, and now the PS4 is no longer a cheaper option.

If I were to go sell my PS4 right now and buy an XBone what would I lose? The smaller size of the console and controller?
Like worse case scenario I'd have to re-buy Rocket League, The Evil Within, and Far Cry 4 since those are the only games I play on it.
