I dont know who would disagree or call you dumb, as this basically a rule everyone should follow for every technological release. I mean, Ipod's, Xbox's, pretty much else has a glitch or unpolished feature at release.
I switched my pre-order from one retailer to GameStop once GameStop allowed pre-orders online. I'm kind of nervous now because the first retailer I was with was guaranteed to ship it on launch, but now I'm not sure if GameStop guarantees a launch day system since they don't seem to close their pre-orders when they sell too many.

They pretty much been winners ever since the PS2.
Maybe I should buy 2 Ps4's and sell one at $599 on ebay
Hmmm, this could just be total bullshit to drum up preorders. Do you really think Sony hasn't done exhaustive market research and manufactured enough units to meet any demand for the forseeable future?
There was talk of not enough stock for preorders for the Galaxy S4 this year, and there turned out to be more than enough to go around.

That or Sony expected to have real competition on the market, which lead to them adjusting their supplies accordingly to match the demand. The XBox turned out to be horrible so more people preordered the Ps4.
Maybe Sony thought Microsoft would try to be competitive?
Remember guys, pre orders are not always guaranteeing you a copy of something with some retailers.
I'm looking at you, Target.com
Xbox 360 only made it due to being released first and a cheaper price. Now it all seems switched around in that ps4 is cheaper, and being released first?
Still i don't like how they are charging you to use the playstation network now.

Yeah but PS+ is a great deal. I've had it ever since I bought my PS3 a few months ago and I can tell you for sure it's a lot more worth $50 than Xbox live is worth $60 and it will probably save you hundreds in the long run.

They did nothing wrong with the PS3, considering how new the blu-ray player was which led to a high price.

That's the problem I'm having right now. I currently have it pre ordered with 2 different places, and I contacted them both to ask if it is a guaranteed release-day system.
Seeing as GameStop is the only online (canadian) retailer I've seen that hasn't sold out, they might just be putting people on some sort of waiting list that will ship whenever it becomes available.
