Donald Trump Says Same-Sex Marriage Is 'Settled' Law
I don't see "leave it to the states" as being an improvement. That's the typical Republican line. "It should be up to the state whether your basic freedoms are recognized."
But I don't think you get to age 70 thinking marriage should stay traditional and then suddenly have a ~completely pure~ change of heart right when it's clear public opinion is on the other side. In fairness, I thought this about Hillary too. She spent quite a long time being anti-gay marriage, only to change her stance in the last couple of years. Made me sick when she posted a smug Tweet about it with some ridiculous rainbow gif. This wasn't your fight, Hillary. You don't get to switch teams in the final minutes and declare yourself the victor. You changed sides because it was beneficial.
I think most politicians were in the "traditional marriage" camp until it became unfashionable to do so. Remember what the gay marriage debate was like a decade ago?

Or at the very least, be like Robert Byrd who used to be in the KKK and talk about how you changed your mind and why. Don't just suddenly flip and pretend you were always on a side
By having a supreme court to overturn the decision. Which he is planning to fill with red anyway so even if hes out of office, it can do damage till they are out.
You can also do it through constitutional amendment but good fucking luck with that one.
Guys.
Guys, I've come to a shocking revelation...
Guys what if we can't trust anything Trump says!?
I'm willing to toxx that gay marriage will not be overturned during Trump's presidency. The escape will be that I have to donate 20 dollars to an LGBT charity that fights against religious influence in politics. If I cannot find one, I'll donate to a regular LGBT charity.
:toxx:
Yeah, I love turning the possibility of someone's rights being called into question into a stupid internet bet.
Yeah, I love turning the possibility of someone's rights being called into question into a stupid internet bet.
Then why even have election toxxes when trump was talking about Mexicans and the entire "locker room talk" scandal? Those also concern future rights, esp when roe vs wade might be challenged
General election toxxes were done in the actual toxx and election threads. This is a thread concerning a specific issue. If you're gonna make a stupid toxx, do it in the appropriate thread.
Twenty bucks is nothing though and is meaningless.
Do some good and donate without pretense of a dumb bet.
Then why even have election toxxes when trump was talking about Mexicans and the entire "locker room talk" scandal? Those also concern future rights, esp when roe vs wade might be challenged
because no one was specifically betting on those and you're using a toxx to worm your way out of a serious argument
every trump voter and everyone trying to justify or downplay or anything relating to the claim that trump will be anything but a disaster that will set this country back decades in progress is going to feel really fucking stupid when they see where we are in 2020, if there's still a country left
Then why even have election toxxes when trump was talking about Mexicans and the entire "locker room talk" scandal? Those also concern future rights, esp when roe vs wade might be challenged
i think it was the part where you lowkey equivocated marriage rights with twenty bucks
anti-gay camps are by far not what the LGBT community is most concerned about
in most of the country it is still legal to be fired or denied housing for your sexuality, or even adopt children; how is any of this supposed to get better under such a presidency with half the population here not giving a shit about LGBT rights?
honestly im not sure it's going to be better, it might be in statis for a few years. I'm fairly sure that it wont regress but it probably won't progress
honestly im not sure it's going to be better, it might be in statis for a few years. I'm fairly sure that it wont regress but it probably won't progress
no fucking shit it won't progress under a conservative presidency like this one
way to completely miss the point
So what happened to all the doomsaying that made it seem like Trump/Pence would set up gulags for gay people?
Trump? I don't think he'd do it
Pence? I don't trust him at all

i donated in your name so you no longer have an excuse.

So you see why LGBT people wouldn't support Trump?
i think it was the part where you lowkey equivocated marriage rights with twenty bucks
No insult was meant.
Unless Trump pulls a quick one and actually starts making strides to make the U.S more progressive in terms of LGBTQ rights.
I mean, I doubt it. But at this point, I don't think it's a good idea to bank on anything he's said.
So you see why LGBT people wouldn't support Trump?
Yes I do see why they wouldn't support trump. I want to ask some LGBT people in this thread some questions:
What do you think about Trump waving the Pride flag at one of his rallies?
Do you think that it's a possibility for Pence to impose his anti LGBT agenda if he stays as VP?
Would you consider Pence representative of the average Republican politician or an abnormality regarding LGBT rights?

He literally held it upside down
Do you think that it's a possibility for Pence to impose his anti LGBT agenda if he stays as VP?
I lived through W. Bush's term with Gingrich so I'd say yes
Would you consider Pence representative of the average Republican politician or an abnormality regarding LGBT rights?
The Republican party is unacceptably bad for LGBT rights in of itself but Pence is such a horrifying goblin of a man that he'd be an abnormality next to anyone bar a literal neo-nazi

20$ a large sum of money? :v:
it was a large sum of money when I was like 8, what :v:
I think what's "common sense" is going about your fucking life instead of sitting around complaining about the outcome of an election, trying to instill fear in people by speculating over the actions a man may or may not take months in advance.
It's the same divisive, antagonistic shit that created a racial divide in this country and allowed two candidates like Trump and Clinton to have a shot at a presidency.
All the while people are massively overestimating the power of the President in comparison to both Congress and the Supreme Court. I can ~possibly~ see some sort of reason seeing all three are soon to come under Republican control, but there are a large number of Republicans who are simply conservatives as opposed to being far-right bible-thumping fools. Although the media and the popular opinion on this forum will tell you that Republicans are all blithering idiots who want to oppress everyone and anyone that isn't a straight white male.
When there are riots in the streets and protests and daily assaults over whether or not a candidate will allow a fucking SLIVER of the population to use the fucking bathroom for the gender they identify as, then yes, I'll call it fearmongering.
"Why wouldn't people be worried about that?" What are they going to do? The election is over? Do you get on an airplane and have a panic attack because airplanes have been hijacked before? Do you shutter in terror when you turn the ignition on your car because you could die in an accident?
Articles and speculation like this is nothing but premature fearmongering and more divisive bullshit.

Half of you are either fools or fearmongers. "I'll believe it in four years." No, yeah, because the President can just, at will, overturn decisions made by the Supreme Court.
Ok.
The vote that same-sex marriage is a fundamental right was very close, only 5-4. Don't act like this isn't in any way a real threat. If any of the Supreme Justices aligned with the Democratic party, or Anthony Kennedy, the sole supporter of gay marriage among the Republican Supreme Justices dies soon, then with the Republican majority in congress he could nominate another anti-LGBT Supreme Justice, and from there they could theoretically overturn the decision.
That still doesn't necessarily mean that it will be overturned, but it most certainly is not an impossibility or even incredibly unlikely. Even if Trump doesn't push for it himself, the rest of the GOP certainly will be.

Most likely pandering. It's not like it's hard to wave a flag.
Do you think that it's a possibility for Pence to impose his anti LGBT agenda if he stays as VP?
If Trump stays true to his word that Pence will have more power than a general VP would? Then of course. But then again, when has Trump ever stayed true to his word. We don't know. And not knowing is what's concerning.

Extremely religiously republican. Most republicans do not support conversion therapy, if only because they don't know what it is.
I don't believe Pence represents the average Republican no, he represents a far more extreme version that focuses on religious influence to form his policy. Which is dangerous. And, again, concerning. Pence's opinions on birth control, AIDS, and abortion are all equally dangerous and to expect him to be any more lenient with his policy on LGBT rights is being far too naive.
No LGBT person is making the assumption that we'll be thrown into death camps. A lot of LGBT people are concerned for a massive regression or stagnation in LGBT rights when it's been progressing. We want to go forward, not backwards. Trump may prove to be massively indifferent, but if he panders to Pence and allows him to get away with whatever he pleases, I'd be hard pressed to believe that Pence wouldn't try to get some stupid shit done at the expense of LGBT people.

I'm in college with no income and like 150 dollars left for the rest of the calendar year thanks to my laptop breaking and needing a new one ASAP. I have to buy books soon for upcoming classes.

What do you think the best case scenario would be? Also, would you consider the fact that it was a conservative judge that made gay marriage legal important?
Thanks for answering my questions by the way instead of taking my stupid statements earlier to heart.
$20 is fucking nothing, I rather you argue instead of placing cheap bets.
There's barely anything to argue. Trump said pro-LGBT things recently but picked a heavily anti-gay Mike Pence. Those are the facts, and that's almost all the intel we have; it's not enough to make a prediction either way. Now it's very much a case of having to wait and see. Any further "discussion" is just more bickering.

I don't automatically hate conservatives on sight. Some of them are more left leaning or moderate. Some are less likely to spew hateful rhetoric than others. Some are just. I dunno. Old. If a conservative judge helped the effort to make gay marriage legal then sure. He's probably an okay dude in that respect.
Best case scenario would be that Trump would push to "pander" to LGBT individuals now that he's effectively clinched the republican vote. Which would mean he would try to be more progressive, even if it's for publicity or what-have-you, while also effectively cutting Pence off from power to do anything about it.
But for now, we can only stop and wait to see if eventually, after flip flopping a hundred times over, he'll settle on a single view and go forward from there.
Hasn't Trump himself said something to the effect of wanting the most powerful VP and/or cabinet?

You're missing like a lot of other facts.
Read this before shitting on LGBT people who are genuinely scared of a Trump Pence ticket. Watch the video if you need to.

Trump:
- Made Mike Pence, a Governor who used taxpayer money to fund gay conversion therapy, your running mate.
- Has repeatedly said that he is for traditional marriage
- Has said he wants to make gay marriage the state's decision
- Has said he would appoint Supreme Court Justices that would reverse the ruling.
Even after knowing all this, if you still believe that LGBT folk have nothing to fear, then you have some serious empathy issues.
Whether this sticks or not, it's enough to make a few republicans regret their decision.
