British soldier throws back grenade, saving 3 lives
Even private contractors have standard operating procedures, and requiring soldiers to wear full battle-rattle in an active combat zone while on duty is a very sensible precaution. A soldier on duty should always have his weapon on hand and his vest on. Lunchtime is still in duty hours. It's a matter of safety, not trying to look cool. Though you do look cool. It's an added bonus, not an objective.
I wouldn't give a shit about whether or not I look cool in a combat zone. I understand you've got to relax slightly at times but personally I think it's better to forget all that. Your on the job and you've got to keep your mind set in the right place. I'm not exactly the most optimistic person but I think that in a situation like that, it helps to forget tedious stuff.
We germans still have better infantry
and tanks
and weapons
We only lost WW2 because of faschist generals who thought we were invincible.Oh well
From what I have seen and heard from British soldiers, the American marines behave like they have watched too many action movies.
The Americans used to be given cards, told not to gamble and drink with British soldiers - "Because you will lose" - not sure if they still give them out.
While the rest of the world has thousands of years worth of military and warrior experience, America seems to have the films Rambo and Die Hard for their motivation. Firing at the hips, selling fast food in your barracks etc. Yet you've got films such as the Hurt Locker and many games featuring American soldiers which glorify themselves and make everyone else look incompetent. I mean I laughed the other day while watching that Hurt Locker, apparently three SAS men die from Taliban snipers but of course a glorious apple pie eating commie hating' American Marine comes in and is capable of using a 50 caliber sniper rifle to hit targets apparently a British special forces unit can't (which are specialized in Sniper weaponry, when a Marine is not).
One thing the Americans do have is wreckless bravery.
What I also found astonishing was how your system is run in the army, it is very old fashioned Prussian, basically your commanders fear the grunt getting high in the ranks so they purposely do not allow soldiers go up the chain this is basically because they fear the common man might question the actions of those richer - ie they're scared of Communism/Socialism ideals.
The Brits in THL were PMCs, not SAS.

Not really. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying German soldiers are bad, but as I recall they weren't especially noteworthy during WW2. Your tanks were damn good for the first part of the war until the allied forces caught up and made better tanks. Your weapons were okay, but I have to hand it to your R&D department, they were ahead of their time, wanting to mount night vision scopes on guns, wanting to make guns that can shoot around corners. Hell, they were the first to field an actual assault rifle in the form of the STG-44.
All things considered, though, it wasn't just your generals that lost you the war.
The soldier must have a lot of guts to do this

Yeah he had a gallbladder, spleen, small intestine, large intestine, a pancreas, and even a stomach.
That's why you cook your grenades before throwing.
In the deep fryer or what?
All these military threads remind me of this film

You need to be a hero to do that for sure..
A lot of you 12 year olds scream LOL I'd do it !! But just think of new years eve, I bet you don't dare to pick up that heavy illegal firework that kid just threw at you ..
Not to think of how much more devastating a grenade is.

WW2 was ~60 years ago. Also German Armor was superior in many ways. We did have tanks capable of destroying them, but these weren't considered normal tanks, they were designated Tank Destroyers, they had a big gun, but weak armor (glass cannons if you will). The Infantry was good too, they knew what they were doing. The problem was after such a long war, all the good ones were getting injured and being replaced with less skilled soldiers, many of those not fit to be soldiers at all (Volksgrenadier Divisions were known for including teenagers, old people, and other people were normally considered unfit for military service. The Volkssturm were poorly trained (to the point where many of them had to get used to their weapons during combat, instead of at a shooting range), and didn't even have a uniform or standard weapon, instead just using makeshift uniforms and leftover / captured / WW1 weapons (which also turned out to be a logistics nightmare with all the different ammo types)).
This isnt news.... its probably happened millions of times before.

This isn't Call of Duty, soldiers don't go to war playing hot potato with grenades all day.
grenades typically have a kill radius of 16 feet, or 5 meters. injury radius is 15 meters, or 50 feet. in games you can survive a grenade at your feet, in real life it would blow you the fuck up.
