So,
What if OWS got their way and the police prevented Wall St. employees from going down the street. IE. The tables are turned.
You guys would celebrate.
But is it not their right also to go to work and make money?
OMFG! POLICE STATE!!!!!!

Some "rob the rich" class warfare idiots would, but most people here are actually reasonable and would recognize that they also have the right to use the sidewalk. Making insulting generalizations like that is what gets you rated dumb.

People broadly paint police in these threads, so why not do the same?
:)

Because then you're doing the same thing and it's still bad? I actually had trouble typing that last sentence out, it's literally such a basic concept it's hard to put into words. I rated you disagree before to be nice, but you're getting a box for this one.

hahahaha oh my god
what kind of horribly convoluted logic do you have to follow to think this is an appropriate method of debate
"Generalizing is SOO immature. Seriously guys if you can't learn to judge the police on an individual basis you have no place in an intellectual debate. NOW LIKE I WAS SAYING, THIS HIPPIE STONER COCK SUCKING PROTESTER CAME UP TO ME ALL COVERED IN BEADS AND HEMP CLOTHING.."

rev up that applause track, HK has finally entered "i trol u" mode

The pictures you posted (disregarding the Pickup until I get some context) aren't examples of forced stoppage of protests as mine are anyway, they're examples of incidents of police brutality.
I don't understand what the difference between stopping a protest and firing tear gas/rubber bullets/LRAD into a protest is.

Because those things didn't disperse or stop the protest and weren't intended to. The teargas and rubber bullets used in Oakland were an attempt to control the crowd, not disperse it.

i need to take a break from reading this thread, this is hilarious
you really think they were shooting them with rubber bullets and deploying teargas in hopes they would calm down and stand in place, rather than go away?

Tear Gas is a disperse tool. You can't physically stand in it without a gas mask. If they fire gas at you they want you gone.

I apologize and admit, they were trying to get the crowd to disperse from that location. Perhaps not the protests in their entirety, but certainly that crowd. When I said control, I meant control where it was, which did involve dispersal.
On a semi-related note, perhaps people would take you more seriously if you didn't so often reply in a tone that can be best described as condescendingly sarcastic. It makes you sound arrogant and presumptuous.

Wow.
If that's what Tear Gas does to a pack of soldiers, imagine what it probably does to untrained civilians.

i'm only arrogant and presumptuous when people say things that are outright stupid
i appreciate your apology but my reaction to someone saying that tear gas and rubber bullets are not tools of dispersal is laughter

Let's fire teargas and rubber bullets at you and see if you don't disperse

not that i know anything scientific about dosage or the effects of room volume on teargas concentration etc.., but i'd also imagine that standing in the thick clouds that are generated by these tear gas canisters are a lot more effective than the almost invisible amount of fumes that are let into the gas chamber in that video OvB posted

I'm just saying, the condescending tone is what leads to people making the conspiracy theorist jokes. It makes it sound like you're brushing things aside and calling people naive sheep, even though you aren't. It's also rude, there's a difference between correcting or informing and mocking.

All depends on the gas. There's not just "tear gas". There are probably dozens, if not hundreds of different variants that all very in strength. At least outside it probably disperses a lot faster than inside a tiny room.
That's why the "idea" is to fire it in a crowd so people get away from the plumes of smoke or they're be coughing up all sorts of stuff. They fire it where they don't want you to go. According to that other thread, the Launchers are suppose to be used so they can direct the herd so to speak, and close off roads from a distance. Because the police already have gas masks on they're suppose to deploy the grenade behind their lines then kick/toss them into the group so that it forms a barrier between them and the people.

i don't know how you could possibly draw "conspiracy theorist" from someone laughing at the idea of rubber bullets being used as a containment tool rather than dispersal
sounds a lot like you're just coming up with lame excuses for ad hominem
though yeah, being a dick was unnecessary, sorry
i don't mind laughing at people who are being blatantly stupid, but you usually are very fair and reasonable so there's no need to jump on one slip-up
Wow, how did I miss this thread? anyway this is shit, I wish I could do more to help the cause but people in indiana are so reasonable business people actually came down and discussed with each other civilly, No police or anything. We stopped making a big scene and so we became less effective. Need to step up the civil disobedience a bit if people are going to notice here anymore.

No, I admitted that you're right, those are tools for dispersal. It was foolish of me to state that they weren't. I'm not talking about what you said, but the way you say things. I explained that it's a matter of tone. When you laugh in someone's face instead of correcting them you come of with the air of a smug self righteous conspiracy theorist. I don't think you are, you're a reasonable person, I'm kinda just asking you to be a bit more polite in debate.
This is the Occupy Wall street protests right? Because this just looks ridiculous and sad.
[editline]18th November 2011[/editline]
Just a question though, could there be a reason why they are blocking that street? Was there some kind of violence break out and they are trying to control it? I want to believe they aren't being dicks for no reason.
So you have to show an id that proves you work in a building to enter that building.
Big fucking deal.

the whole street... a public street. do you not get what that means.

I'm assuming it's something with safety reasons or whatever.
I'll leave this here to take a break from these heated discussions.
