I wish I could be addicted to video games. Haven't felt that feeling in years
The article says nothing about how long/often he games for. For all we know this "addiction" could be ~6 hours a day everyday or what. It's unclear. :|
I'm sure it was like him playing for 12 hours on weekdays or something crazy and his parents were like ok your grades are shit don't play more than a couple hours.
It's probably more the fact he was spending all day, every day in doors with no real social interaction than the games specifically, but I'm no psychiatrist.
you don't need to be a psychiatrist to know that total seclusion minus videogames is bad for you
What if excess gaming didn't lead to poor mental health but poor mental health led to excessive amount of gaming, as well as causing him to go violent?
Theres also shit parenting.
hopefully this won't make it to msn news, or ill get a lot of crap.
You know, in a lot of cases I'd scoff, but I'll admit myself that I find the internet and some video games addicting - Often to the detriment of my social and school life. Video game addiction IS a real problem, and by the sound of the article, this kid is really, really far gone. Maybe he does need some sort of rehab.

my little sister got AIDS from sharing cartridges
I'd say it could go both ways. Gaming can be good according to some studies, but overuse of it can't be great.
just like everything on the planet ever
It's probably more the fact he was spending all day, every day in doors with no real social interaction than the games specifically, but I'm no psychiatrist.
The video game playing could create some social isolation, which could in turn cause him to want to play more to escape the feeling of isolation, further isolating him.
It's a sad cycle.
my brother rages like hell and sometimes hits people if his ping goes over 150 in LoL.
annoying as shit

As much as I'd like to berate LoL that sounds like he has anger issues or something, 150ms isn't even that bad unless you're playing Unreal or something.
pc gaming is addictive
shouldve gotten a console
hurr

My brother has a stash of video game needles in our garage. :smith:
What sort of mental problems did this kid have? I know he got violent when they tried taking the games away, but they're reading much too into that. Any kid will throw a fit if you try taking something away. If your kid loves to play football and did nothing but play it everyday instead of studying for a test that he failed and you took away his football as punishment, he's going to contest that and get angry.
You know, come to think of it, why is it people only talk about video games like an addiction but not a sport like football. Yes i get that it's exercise but still.
The world doesn't like video games :(
The Court finds that absence of parenting, which the boy had been exposed to around the clock, is a "socially destructive behavior"
Fixed that for you
The best part was some psychologist said gaming is like drugs, and should be banned/restricted.
IT'S NOT AN ADDICTION, IT'S A FUCKING LIFESTYLE

Oh my fucking god, why did I find this so hilarious? I feel like a bad person now.
When his father grabbed him, was he trying to bite his arm? He sounded like he's having an exorcism.
My brother is addicted to video games, its mostly my parents fault though because they don't moniter how much time he spends on games so I don't blame my brother. I do disconnect him from the internet myself though when he spends way to much time in a single sitting though. He once played video games for 10 hours straight and hes only 8 years old. Dammit mom do your job.

I remember it in the news. They even got him into a talk show and when he got asked how long he sits at the computer he said "How long I sit at the computer isn't your thing so be quiet."
What exactly constitutes "addiction to video games." For some parents it would be more than 2 hours a day, for others it would be 12 or so.
I wanna see how much this kid plays every day.
I find it funny that the parents that tend to complain about their kids playing vidya games are typically the kind of people that sit in front of their TVs for like six hours a day.
My parents used to complain to me all the time about "being addicted to gaming" and "how it was dangerous to me." When I brought up that point they stopped trying to put limits on my gaming time and etc.

I used to be able to play with 150 ping fine. Back in 1998. If my ping goes over 100 I can't play anymore.
