The way to deal with kids like that is to be consistent and take the computer away from them every time they throw a hissy fit over it, then they'd soon learn not to. I guess most people just give in though because its a nightmare dealing with that on a daily basis.

For some parents it would be more than 2 hours a day, for others it would be 12 or so. I wanna see how much this kid plays every day.
Probably a ton. I can imagine him playing for around 8 to 13 hours a day or something. I'd be scared to see his reaction when "back to school" comes along and he has to get off.
A teenager didn't listen to his parents? Instant news!

I think it depends exactly how you're using the video games. I mean, truly, 10 hours of anything straight is not good for one's health, but sometimes video games are used directly as a means of social interaction. For example, my older brother lives miles away, and we play Left 4 Dead 2 for a few hours on the weekends while talking over Skype. And I have long-time friends that I know both online and/or offline that I often do play games with while conversing about things and vice-versa. And then you get into roleplay, which comes with it's own set of problems and advantages. Not to mention whether or not it counts based on the pacing of the game, multitasking with in-game web browsers, steam conversations, intermittent and regular breaks, And then you also have to factor in whether or not they're using certain games as creative and emotional outlets. Articles like this are always horrible, because they never take any of the wide range of variables into account.
The best part was some psychologist said gaming is like drugs, and should be banned/restricted.
I never understood the aggression that people have towards others having fun. If you love studying, then you're labeled as a sociopath. If you love football, then you're labeled as braindead. If you love sex, you're labeled as a whore. If you love rap, you're labeled as a moron. If you love parties, you're labeled as a potential alcoholic.
Coming from someone who used to be addicted to gaming for years, I can say it's bad for you in a lot of ways, especially socially.
yes World of warcraft makes people assault their fathers Clearly the kid does not have any issues, WoW made him do this
Being addicted, you can go as far as to do such things. Ofcourse the reason why he's spending so much time on WoW is probably because something isn't working out for him IRL.
If he actually has some real life/social issues and games a lot to escape reality then taking away gaming is a really bad decision. It's like taking away a weapon from a human surrounded by tigers. He needs psychological help and support, not an "addict" label. I know during my early teens I would game a lot to escape shit that was going on around me. If someone was to take that away I'd have a lot more trouble passing that period. Heavy addictions are often symptoms of something deeper that has to be treated. An illness does not go away if you simply treat some more obvious symptoms, it can actually make it worse. While gaming is getting more mainstream it's still not there. It's under-researched and many "experts" have a pre-defined bias and ignorance towards gaming. A better way to treat this imo would be to first find out what could cause this and then gradually reduce computer time, not just take it away instantly. Physical addictions are treated like that, by lowering the dose gradually. So why not gaming? You can't treat something you don't understand and a large portion of parents know little to nothing about technology and gaming. Though in the end nothing will change for a long time, if anything treatment could get even worse as games advance and the old generation will see them as ultimate evil from the devil. Things should get better once gamer generation becomes the majority of parents.
My parents used to complain to me all the time about "being addicted to gaming" and "how it was dangerous to me." When I brought up that point they stopped trying to put limits on my gaming time and etc. I used to be able to play with 150 ping fine. Back in 1998. If my ping goes over 100 I can't play anymore.
I hardly ever get below 200 Everything runs fine anyway, is it really that fucking difficult?
I hardly ever get below 200 Everything runs fine anyway, is it really that fucking difficult?
I can't stand having a ping over 100 in most games. After 100 then the latency starts fucking with the game, especially in TF2.
I hardly ever get below 200 Everything runs fine anyway, is it really that fucking difficult?
Trust me, once you get used to ~30 ping servers you'll never want to go back. It's like when I was younger and I could play games with 10 fps just fine. I have a computer that runs every game maxed out at 60+ FPS and I don't want to go back to playing on a pentium 3.
I am on my 5th playthrough of Alpha Protocol help [editline]25th October 2012[/editline]
this shit right here
He sounds rabid
Yeah, some people really do spend far too much time at the computer/playing games.
What if excess gaming didn't lead to poor mental health but poor mental health led to excessive amount of gaming, as well as causing him to go violent?
I don't see anything in the article that says otherwise [editline]25th October 2012[/editline]
I hardly ever get below 200 Everything runs fine anyway, is it really that fucking difficult?
There's a lot of servers on the west coast of the USA so I always have around 30 ping. If it gets any higher my game lags to shit
I bet this will fuel everyones parents even further into "omg our son is addicted to da computerz"
Some time ago I posted that "web addiction" exists and that I would self-diagnose myself as a sufferer. I got something like 160 agrees. Now that a parent is doing the accusing, it's reprehensible?

Sounds like my average Friday night.
They tried to make me go to rehab, I said, no, no, no
