The most annoying part of the Senate paper was worrying about making a mistake. You can't erase any mistakes, you have to get a new ballot. I preferences 30 candidates below the line, and it would have pissed me off of say if for #29 I accidentally cast a second #28 preference.
That's not an issue, we hated having to spoil a ballot as much as you do, so you can just cross it out and write the intended number on/above/next to it.
As long as the intent is clear, it'll count as formal. And even if it's not, it counts as formal for as long as there's an unbroken 1->x.
So, worst case scenario for you, it would've been formal from 1->27

They should tell us that. That's good to know, but I fortunately didn't make any mistakes anyways. I like the changes to the voting. I thought preferencing 30 candidates was annoying enough, but that's not even 1/5th of the NSW Senate ballot, which I would have had to preference in-full at the last election if I did below the line. I voted below the line because some parties shared tickets and I didn't want to vote for those parties in their ticket's order, and because rather than complaining about a lack of female Senators, I can actually do something about that.
I actually couldn't wait to vote today. A lot of people, especially other young adults, seem so needlessly apathetic. I overheard a lot of people in line today who at that point still had no idea who they would vote for. Those people were actually heaps older people. Bogans.
They should tell us that.
Officially, our job is to instruct voters on how to vote, as it is written on the ballot paper.
That said, somewhere on the AEC website (probably hidden) is a FAQ where it says there are vote saving measures that will be taken if voters don't follow the instructions. What I mentioned in my previous post is one of them.
When I was at training, I was told that in the previous federal election, someone went below the line, and numbered every single box with binary. It was about to be thrown in the informal pile, but someone recognised it, and spent the time to actually check it. It was then up to the Divisional Returning Officer to decide if it would be admitted, and they decided it would.
Not sure how true that story is, but if it is, it shows you how far those vote saving measures will go to try and make it count.

Oh man. I know how to read and write in binary, but that must have taken an hour to write, especially without any mistakes.
Just voted myself, was going to get a sausage but it looked pretty disappointing. Interesting what people you see in line, there was a guy in rave gear and another that looked straight out of Housos. West Australia is truly a diverse state.
Polls seem to indicate that it's swinging their way.. but I am puckering my rear for the surprise Green uprising in both houses.
This will be a truly interesting election given the rise in right wing / conservative candidates; as well as the polarization on so many large topics.
I'm suspecting Liberals will just scrape buy while Labor loses a large chunk of its base to the Greens.
A couple funny messages from my former co-workers at their respective polling booths.

Spent 35 mins in line voting at the nearest polling station to me. Sucks - longest I've ever waited before by 30 mins.
Then I got told by the AEC officer there that you must vote on the Senate paper 6 above or 12 below and no more, which is categorically wrong (you must vote a minimum of 6 above or 12 below, but number as many as you want after that).
Today sucked.

Yeah, the main problem is that, from my understanding, ordinary issuing officers didn't get any actual training (* I may be wrong), just a manual and instructions to read it before polling day.
Anyone above that level got actual training, which went through the changes, and exactly what to say in order to not confuse the voter (or themselves)
You're right, it is a minimum of 6 above, or minimum 12 below.
i interviewed a bunch of micro parties outside town hall
a lot said "i have no idea what were doing", ill be posting it on youtube later

You mean the mushroom parties that sprout up then disappear because they're only doing it to raise awareness for a single semi-niche issue?
One of the guys on our green slip I have actually seen around raising awareness.
He drives a convertible, with his name emblazoned all over it. He looks like a homeless person, and waves around signs saying "Vote 4 me <3"

Did they really not even bother to read what is written on the vote paper?

if you didn't number every box below the line, are you even a real australian?
Did they really not even bother to read what is written on the vote paper?
To be fair, the senate paper is oriented so it faces the voter. Makes it easier for the voter to read, and for us to scribble in that "official use" circle

NT Australians probably can't count that high.
Wow, so much shit floating around on Facebook. I know people don't like the LNP, but making them to be evil is rather dumb.

I told them and landed up in an argument, which I decided just to leave it be - ended with her telling me 'we don't count after 6 or 12 anyway'.
FFS.
Are the results going to be cast today (less than 4 hours from now) or tomorrow? (more than 4 hours hours from now)
Results start counting at the close of the ballots 99% of the time the new Government is known by the end of the night. Certain close seats may not be known for days, but often have some indication of the results.
Official results are not declared for at least a week, but the Government is known.

at 6pm AEST, all polling stations along the east coast in the east states (Queensland, NSW, A.C.T, VIC and TAS) will close
Then at 7-8pm AEST, SA, WA, NT along with the very west side of QLD, NSW and VIC will close
counting starts immediately upon close (ive worked at the elections i know the drill), voting normally stops at a lot of polling stations 2 hours before, however the AEC sends out updates at about all major seats every few minutes to the media
speculation + predictions will be called at around 8-9pm tonight
ABC24 is the best place to get up-to-date coverage without the unnecessary commentators and bullshit that the main networks do
I'll be on a train in rural china so im not going to get to follow the vote tallies. That's half the fun taken away.
I didn't know who to put 6 for the senate so I put on Aus health party and learned after that they're anti vaxxer. Shit.
Grandma is voting libs after she got ransomware this morning and I carelessly said "Might have been russians or something" and she got pissed at the immigants
Lucky she prints out basically everything because I had to nuke the PC back to zero, it's completely fucked

I think they're going to get in in NSW due to their position on the ballot paper. Fucking horrible.

I still can not for the lofe of me understand the anti-immigration attitude that so many australians have, besides plain old racism. They're always complain that they're taking our jobs and leeching off welfare. Can't exactly do both at once, i dont understand the mental gymnastics they use to hold that viewpoint.
lmao, my local rise up australia candidate is a vietnamese woman named Tran Tran who lives 150km away on the other side of melbourne.
every single how to vote card put them last.

I don't blame you or anyone else who does that. They really have a misleading party name.

tbf "liberal" has also become a slightly misleading name
