To be fair, almost every religion states that you should be good to all people. I've heard (not a fact I've had cited from anywhere, but my RE teacher said it) that the Old Testament was simply the Torah added to the front of the Bible to make Christianity seem more 'ancient' to the Romans- so, anybody who refutes the whole Jesus 'love thy neighbour' thing to go shout about killing gays should probably reconsider which religion they want to be a fundamentalist of. Most of the religious texts were written in a time where it was acceptable to treat women, homosexuals, ethnic minorities and the like like shit because people just didn't know any better. Now that we've grown some sense as a species, it's time to realise that obeying the stupid laws in Leviticus is like buying Betamax tapes. Of course, the vast majority of people, religious or not, have actually realised this. We just need to work, as a community, on that little minority that remains.
