Shit happens. If you aren't smart with guns, you'll die, just like this guy. He's not an example of why we need gun control, he's an example of why we need safer gun users, however, a shining, perfect example. He also may have been the type to forget his gun in where kids could reach it, if so, we need gun safety videos and very cheap ones, with free holsters for everyone.
I can't imagine the kids reaction though, just imagine, you're shopping all happily, suddenly, out of no where, POP, your father is bleeding and on the ground, and before you know it, dead.
hi my name is contag and as a rule I never read more than the first sentence before commenting
I don't see why you'd need to carry a gun with you while you go shopping.

spoken like a true non-american
Why would he have it loaded and tucked in his hip at all, knowing it didn't have a safety switch? Like I feel for him but I know if I owned a gun I would think "I should probably try to avoid accidentally hitting the trigger". I think I'd be careful even if the safety was on. I don't think a gun should be loaded unless you're about to use it.
Problem is, just having the knowledge isn't going to stop a lot of people from being irresponsible.
Well maybe at the gun safety classes they can talk about this idiot and the other idiot who shot his dick off
Wow, I thought he got hit in the head or heart. But the hip? Just tie something around the wound, you shouldn't die from something like that.
You lose 2 liters of blood a minute if the femoral artery is severed. With the average male having between 5-7 liters of blood, you have just about 30 seconds to completely stop the bleeding with a tourniquet or something similar, or you'll pass out and die from blood loss.
The reporter in the video said that the gun is believed to be a glock.

Must've been the red and black one.
Those spud-guns were made to kill man.

.40 Glock is an usual police pistol in the US, and it's commercially available, affordable gun.

It's just like my video games!!
He must have been fumbling with that belt pretty fucking hard.
Why would you carry a gun when going grocery shopping with your family??
Because it is not safe and bad men will attack you in the milk department.

Is the crime rate really that high in America?
Is the crime rate really that high in America?
What does that have to do with his post?
Why would you carry a gun when going grocery shopping with your family??
Because what's the point in owning a gun if you're not going to use to protect yourself.
If I had a carry permit I would carry it with me at all times. You can never know when shit can go down.
Is the crime rate really that high in America?
Does it really matter that it is? The perception is that it is really high, and that guns are absolutely necessary for safety partly because all the criminals have guns as well.
As opposed to Australia, where we have like 50 homicides a years, three of them with guns*.
*Not actual statistics, but it's absurdly low
If I lived in a country where I was afraid to go grocery shopping without a firearm, I'd move.

from my local news yesterday morning, "34th homicide this year"
(this is the same city where the 28lb girl died, and the woman that microwaved her own baby awhile back)
The reporter in the video said that the gun is believed to be a glock.
[thumb]http://crimsonaudio.net/guns/funny/journalist_guns_2.jpg[/thumb]
Yeah except most other pistols have grip safeties, so this wouldn't have happened. Don't just assume automatically that because a journalist said glock they don't know what they are talking about. Hell, in rare cases they are actually right!
While I advocate a certain level of gun control, this seems more like the product of his own negligence, particularly if he's carrying a gun that didn't have a safety. I'm just glad no one else got hurt.
Not sure I advocate carrying a concealed firearm around your family, though. Particularly if there's the chance it could discharge and hit one of your own children.

The gun has a safety, it's just not a grip safety.
hence my comment about him fumbling with the seatbelt pretty fucking hard
He could've shot his kids at some point if they sat on his lap..
Carrying a gun outside a holster in a public place should be illegal.
Reminds me of my uncle, he keeps a snub-nose revolver in his waistband.
It's this sort of thing that makes me think guns should be harder to get. Not illegal, I know a lot of Americans would have a fit if the government even considered that, but maybe have a mandatory safety course or something before you can buy one.

Umm, you do have to get a license first.

I thought that some (and it's a small minority, but still some) states granted open carry permits automatically once you are of age, with no prerequisites in the US?

As far as I can tell with brief internet research, Virginia has pretty lax gun laws.
Accidents happen with almost everything. I see this as more of an individual problem than a matter of restricting weapon ownership.
Agree. Accident is not a reason to strengthen a law
