Oh good god. Someone explain how he's infinitely wrong in every sense.
i hate to reply to this a page late and about mass effect but actually all it does is increase speed without the negative effects of lightspeed travel
Something not 'being there' is superstitious. If everything about the brain is being replicated exactly, down to the most fundamental level of processing (whatever that may be), how can there be a difference in the resulting thoughts, outside of physical reality? [editline]09:06PM[/editline] So instead, every time cell reproduction is supposed to occur, the job is switched over to an artificial component with an identical purpose. Does my conciousness still cease?
Nope it's totally fine and I have no issues with this, it's just the bulk removal thing I have issues with. It's just, fuck it I don't know how to explain it, it just don't really sit right with me. :smith:
Holy shit [editline]05:13PM[/editline] Are we seriously basically making living things from nothing now?
Very close, they didn't build an actual cell from scratch, but the genetic code which was then implanted into a host cell.
i hate to reply to this a page late and about mass effect but actually all it does is increase speed without the negative effects of lightspeed travel
Use such a drive near a black hole and get incinerated as it vomits out a burst of photons when their speed suddenly is enough to escape the event horizon.
Use such a drive near a black hole and get incinerated as it vomits out a burst of photons when their speed suddenly is enough to escape the event horizon.
afaik they don't
If the conscious/self awareness could be transfered to the cells, it might still be "you". But we don't know where it's located or how we're all aware of our own body exactly. So I bet it won't happen.
Syntetic Material before nanobots? Fuck.
Syntetic Material before nanobots? Fuck.
we already have nanobots
Awesome. 21th century really IS the future
I don't know what about you guys but I'm not really afraid of stuff like monsters and zombies, I really doubt someone would create such things. What I do fear though, is that with genetic engineering people will be able to choose how their kids will look and that kind of stuff, people will obviously mostly choose to have the same type of kids which everyone will agree are the "best", this will make the other kids "inferior", so a family who can't afford genetical engineering will most probably have "inferior" kids. Basically this will make the more financially secure parts of society "better people" while the lesser secure and those leaving in poverty will actually be considered "less human" or "on the bad side of humanity". Then we'll basically have a Nazi-master-race type thing, where people will say the "inferior" humans must be destroyed so humanity will be better.
Somehow I read "life" as "fire"
I'm not a creationist or anything, but I just don't think we should be making life, too much risk of something going wrong
Adding to conscience debate, You can only copy the conscience if the brain is an exact facsimile of the original. Down to the sub-particle movements. If not, it'll only share memories and have a similar agenda. But the copy would make an awesome person in conversation.

There is a fear that it will cause such a divide that humanity will split into separate species'

WE HAVE REACHED INTO THE DIRT AND CREATED NEW LIFE :science:
That will also suck. Other people will choose my job for me? Doesn't sound good. I mean they can't also make you WANT the job right? Because if so then people could literally be made slaves, you could make others want to serve you and stuff like that, and they won't feel bad about it. The possibilities of this doing more evil than good are endless.
Spliceeeee
And then they fuck something up and create a super-deadly virus by accident.
Zombies.

If you were going to be a pilot, you would be in a tumbler so you'd feel best when flying. Your entire life is mapped out from the second you come into existance.
The use for sex for reproduction is over. You know what that means :pervert:
Yes. Less sex.
There was this TED talk about proto cells and how they can make buildings for us and shit
Well I'll be damned. As soon as I opened this thread a commercial for a show about this very thing came on the Science Channel. Probably going to watch it. It's called "Creating Synthetic Life" http://science.discovery.com/
I don't give shit about creationists, I just don't want to die because some fucktard thinks that it might be interesting to combine some common airborne shit and Ebola. [editline]09:46PM[/editline] Because this IS going to happen sooner or later.
I doubt mankind can be responsible with creating life.
That's what they said about DNA, Electricity, The Wheel, and Fire!
I don't give shit about creationists, I just don't want to die because some fucktard thinks that it might be interesting to combine some common airborne shit and Ebola. It's looking at me... :ohdear:
Airborne Ebola. Now that would be interesting.
Not only are your cells slowly being turned into a virus filled mush, someone smelling it can get infected!
Not only are your cells slowly being turned into a virus filled mush, someone smelling it can get infected!
The mortality rate would be enormous.
And then they fuck something up and create a super-deadly virus by accident.
Scientists aren't as clumsy and fool hardy as everything leads you to believe. They understand the risks and they don't take them. No wait, I know what your gonna say "but that's just not fun".
