Maybe most people won't look at it as a Ulysses or something but referring to something as art isn't really the same as saying, "I love it."
Is that directed at me? I don't get it. I never said anything of the sort.
I was referring to the poopie that you were referring to. I was just adding a little comment s'all.
I was referring to the poopie that you were referring to. I was just adding a little comment s'all.
Oh okay.
because you aren't trying to get it silly. if you can look at something and immediately know exactly what it is and what it means, then it really isn't inspiring much thought or introspection, now is it?
I literally cannot get it. Every day in art classes in primary school and early secondary I asked what the meaning or purpose was whilst I drew various pictures of Victorian cities, battles and railways. The teacher didn't think my art was good enough and told me that I didn't understand art, saying that I was better suited to being an architect. So I stopped doing it, and whenever I see such art I cannot see why the artist would do such a thing and get credited for it. I put work into my pictures at school and rejected, the bastard who threw paint pots onto a canvas gets millions of pounds.
Art isn't all technical stuff. It's about using technical stuff to achieve emotional resonance. Van Gough's Starry Night doesn't look the least bit realistic but it's seen as a classic because of the mood it creates. I find that paint splatter stuff asinine too, but mindless emotionless paint splatter is just as underwhelming as mindless emotional photorealistic painting. You may appreciate the talent, but it has no lasting effect beyond that if the artist doesn't put any soul into it.

I put work into my pictures at school and rejected, the bastard who threw paint pots onto a canvas gets millions of pounds.
i think what your teacher was saying was that you shouldn't ask someone else the meaning of a work of art, because the point of art is finding out what it means to you, and no one else can tell you what it means to you (but if she never actually said that and told you that you shouldn't be an artist, then that's just lame) there isn't any truth to get, when it comes to heavily abstracted or expressionist art, part of the point is subjectivity. (Using the example of the Pollock painting I posted above), the question is "What does that painting mean to you" (there isn't a wrong answer here). I know it doesn't look like anything directly, but what does the combination of those colors, green white and black mean to you? What do the streaks and lines and splatter seem to look like? You're not being asked a definite question, with a correct answer and a wrong one, the question is what you, personally feel. What makes a painting like that great is that it has these shared connotations to it (most people share a number of images associated with the color green like nature or spring), but at the same time, two people can look at it and have totally different interpretations of it. The question about art, especially abstract or expressionist art, isn't "what does it mean", the question is "what does it mean to you"? (also [this is beside the point] pollock didn't just throw paint on a canvas, he had an intensive and carefully controlled process and he spent huge amounts of time on each painting, laboriously laying layer after layer of paint on top of each other)
why are you guys arguing about art it's obvious sobotnik doesn't like modern art because *crying* THE TEACHER DIDN'T LIKE MY DRAWINGS
no i think she was just being really obtuse with some sort of "teaching by making the student realize it himself" method
Art has really gone to the dogs.

Jesus Christ. It's like something out of a horror movie.
It'd be pretty horrible if it rotted on his face. The smell, the taste, etc.
It's fake though. All the pictures are photoshopped and there's no credible sources.

Hopefully none of you believe you can stick dead animals to your face and it starts growing on your skin. It rotted off long ago. If it isnt fake, wich it probably is.
