last time i tried openoffice it couldn't even open a regular word document, and if i saved it as backwards compatible the layout of the page was really messed up
last time i tried openoffice it couldn't even open a regular word document, and if i saved it as backwards compatible the layout of the page was really messed up
legit issue, however realize that openoffice is a rather old platform that isnt as actively developed, all the devs have moved on to libreoffice, not a guarantee that will solve your problem though also, the "last time i tried" is very dependant on when. with more recent need to open microsoft formatted documents on mobile, support for layouts has increased drastically in open source solutions. Although unless your trying to hard, you will never truely get away from the ms vendor lockin
has anyone got a screenshot of this popup?
It is extremely boring:
Damn XP is old, just look at that pop up! You can tell it dates from ancient times when 4:3 CRT monitors roamed the Earth, and webpages were optimized for IE using at least 800x600 resolution.
I just dug around for some nostalgia and found this on the wiki- copyright trolling killing games since forever
Oh-ho man, could I tell you some stories about CC2. My brother was on Somerville's level design team; I still have a copy of my own sitting on my computer. Doesn't work anymore, though; newer DirectX killed it.
My dentist still uses XP. Looking at it, their computer must be like at least 11 years old now, it sounds like a bloody vacuum cleaner and just as loud too
I still use xp because I can't justify doing a wipe & clean install until i've got a new pc that isn't held together by duct tape and love.
.....You do know you can upgrade and still keep all of your files, right?
My dentist still uses XP. Looking at it, their computer must be like at least 11 years old now, it sounds like a bloody vacuum cleaner and just as loud too
just think that computer is older than most Rust players let it settle in
Will Windows 8 run on my pc? it's so old.
37gb HD? Holy shit buddy that's enough space for windows 7 and a video game!
Pretty sure it will run
Will Windows 8 run on my pc? it's so old.
It'll probably run Windows 8, but it won't run all that well. And your graphics card hasn't received a driver update since 2010 (and that driver definitely didn't include anything new for the card) - the driver is for Vista/7 and as such it might work with Windows 8, but I really can't be sure of that - it doesn't seem like it's even officially supported on Windows 7. And 37GB is too little space - after installing Windows 8, you'll have about ~15GB-20GB free if you're lucky. Though I suppose you're already comfortable with having basically no space.
It's not too little space, he won't have much space now anyway, he's obviously used to it. Windows 7 drivers should work ok with Windows 8, not fully supported but should be ok i think
Still, spending $100 on a license for that computer seems asinine.
Still, spending $100 on a license for that computer seems asinine.
When he finally gets/builds a new one, he can move the license to that one, though. Also, I have W8 installed on my Ultrabook's integrated 18GB SSD, after all updates and such, there's still about 5GB left.
Will Windows 8 run on my pc? it's so old.
honestly its probably better for that thing to keep using XP because at least you know it'll run with XP, just have to be careful I guess. until you're ready to get a new one, of course. With all the needed components 'fresh' don't even worry about spending a lot either. A high end machine would be about 1000$, but medium, 500$-800$. Don't even get a SSD, get a 700gb harddrive, you shouldn't really need that much more. if you don't use computers a lot then spending too much would get redundant. [editline]10th March 2014[/editline]
Still, spending $100 on a license for that computer seems asinine.
one thing he needs to spend money on is a can of air :v:
Honestly, most modern OSes are pretty bad. I don't jack off to XP or anything but 7 was the last real OS that was power-user friendly. It's all about anyone being able to use a computer. You're going to be able to jerk off and play Crysis at the same time. -Windows 8 made a start screen that was less convienient for me, took up more space, and installed a bunch of useless shit on to my computer -Every OS X version after Snow Leopard has been "oh hey guys, we took PPC support out because...we wanted to but OMG MOVE YOUR FINGERS ON THE TRACKPAD" -I'd love to use Linux primarily but Premiere isn't on Linux and emulating that big of an application doesn't really work well Watch some chucklefuck reply to this post and say that I could download and install a third party piece of software to make the OS even usable
Will Windows 8 run on my pc? it's so old.
Keep with what you've currently got, when you upgrade the whole system that is the time to change OS. It's not really worth it currently for you, just make sure you've got a nice antivirus and don't do anything stupid like visit random unknown porn sites or someshit.

This is why I always say "get 8.1 if you start new, if metros that bad use classic shell, if you already have 7, don't even bother" using third party software seems like a sorta shitty thing to say because that partly implies other people are capable of doing shit Microsoft didn't... like how GIF images aren't animated in image viewer.

As for OSX I haven't really used it, but are there any great PPC applications that don't have modern alternatives or updated versions? The multi-touch trackpad is really nice, I don't think that limits power-users, and there's still mice. If you're doing a lot of creative work Linux isn't really for you. I wouldn't say modern OSes are bad, it's just the Windows 8 start menu was designed for touch screen, which most people don't have, and yeah people don't like change. I've used Mavericks a little and that just seems like any version of OSX with some new stuff, apparently a bit slow and unstable compared to Mountain Lion, no one forces you to upgrade though, the support is still there

It's like how shoddy minecraft is where you have to download optifine to even make it playable. It just irks me.
Minecraft shouldn't have been developed in Java, someone made one in C++ (I think) and it ran 100x smoother, at the end of the day the game is just blocks and really low detailed textures, makes no sense why it shouldn't run smooth
Well, looks like it's time to install a Linux distro on my older desktop.
End-of-life support? Oh no! Now I'll have to browse tech support forums for help! Seriously, if I was still using Windows XP (which I'm not) I'd just browse the web for computer help like I usually do every once in a blue moon. EDIT: If I was retarded (i.e. a school district) I'd still be using XP.

I can put up with patches. I can put up with updates. Companies owning up to their shitty code is just fine IMO. But when someone else fixes your shit themselves I don't see how software companies do not see that as the biggest slap to the face.

Most technology companies in the last few years have focused on getting a new install base than keeping their fucking current install base happy. Happened with Apple. Happened with Win 8. Those are the two biggest names in the industry so OEMs are going to follow. I've tried to play older games on mac, PPC applications. There really isn't support for downgrading to Mountain Lion, they over write your recovery drive with a Mavericks installer, they remove ML from the Mac App store, they're asking me to torrent their fucking OS I am not saying that I have or have not torrented Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion but rather implying that by not making it available that's really the only way to get it pls don't ban
