but the true britains all died when the romans invaded, followed by the saxons and the angles and later the jutes invaded, followed by a century of dutch and french occupation
The *Britons were not exterminated by the Romans. They lived on until the Anglo Saxons came and pushed them into Wales, Cornwall and Scotland. Those who did not leave integrated into Anglo culture.
The Normans were also not French.
When someone says 'European' I immediately think of mainland Europe, I wouldn't call myself European, not because of anything to do with the EU or that malarkey but just because for some weird reason it doesn't feel right. European to me, means French or Russian or something, whereas I'm just British.
In my eyes anyway.

French, or Russian?
What?
I'm pretty sure your average uk citizen doesn't know anything about the eu-uk arrangements and has no strong opinion one way or the other

He means somebody from continental Europe.

People who say this are historically naive and illiterate, thinking being European is having Italian or French culture.
But I want to stay in the EU
It simplifies a lot of things like travel.
See I think there's 3 types of Europe.
Mainland Europe, Eastern Europe and Britain.
Britain claims itself to be European as much as New Zealand claims itself to be Australasian I guess.
I'm pretty sure your average uk citizen doesn't know anything about the eu-uk arrangements and has no strong opinion one way or the other
Then they damn well should, being given a fucking referendum on a subject they have no idea about is fucking retarded and all it'll do is hurt everyone.
I'd rather we stay a part of EU than against it, not only for the economic/immigration reasons but also for a vague hope that something unrealistic happens like the EU suddenly being our main government than our current coalition. I give up on democracy and welcome whatever new government comes our way in the future.
Tories are more or less using the referendum as bait for more years in number ten, most people these days don't know the kind of shit the EU benefits even when it's in plain sight.
I doubt anyone in England can say we're "European" however, maybe it's the fact we're not on the mainland I don't know. Either-way a lot of the country is giving in to the bait of the EU that Cameron's putting forward fronted by some nationalism shit and to put us "back in control".
Personal gain is overshadowing common good :(
I'm still pissed the EU banned light bulbs.
You can still buy halogen bulbs to replace them.
And the people whining about standard incandescent bulbs being banned are either geezers, idiots who always buys the cheapest & shittiest CFL bulbs, or a combo of those.
If you can even call it that
Please let the referendum not happen, it would be so terrible :(
I'm pretty sure your average uk citizen doesn't know anything about the eu-uk arrangements and has no strong opinion one way or the other
They don't know anything about it and yet still have strong opinions.
Eurosceptic here and as I've said many times before, most other Eurosceptics acknowledge the economic benefits of Europe but resent the political integration. More so we don't need to be in Europe to be able to trade with it. I've spent a couple months studying the EU at college now so don't say that I'm ignorant as to what it does or how it works. Don't talk about the EU as if it's a perfect institution. It's undemocratic as fuck, the EU commission has most of the power and it's unelected, the elected European parliament has very little real power by comparison and Qualified Majority Voting pretty much squashes any chance that the smaller countries have of getting anything they want if the larger countries oppose it.
I also resent the notion that all Eurosceptics are just ignorant Xenophobes. There are legitimate reasons to be against it, or at least not be happy with the way that it currently is.
I'm sure that there are also many people who support the EU because they know fuckall about it.

Well maybe if our government weren't dicks to Europe, the UK might have more say in European politics.
(IE: stop vetoing absolutely everything that doesn't benefit britain, and other stuff like that)

We wouldn't be such dicks to them if they gave us stuff that did benefited us and then we'd stop vetoing it.

More like "your average UK citizen knows nothing about the EU-UK arrangements and yet has a strong opinion".

And what stuff exactly do you want from the EU?
Thank fuck I'm learning French. Allons-y if we vote to leave.

Personally I don't think they can offer us anything that we can't do ourselves. But I do think that if they ceeded points on immigration or the enviroment then a lot of Eurosceptics in this country would abandon their positions.
I've always thought of myself as a European technically. I tried to convince someone on my college course that we were europeans, but he wouldn't believe me because we don't use the euro.
David Cameron is a fucking idiot.
I would rather not be in the EU but have a Free Trade (no export / import taxes) Agreement
and a few other things i can't think of right now.
This is mainly because i dislike the idea of these other countrys impacting on what we do, e.g. when they changed the cable colours to blue and brown, trying to give prisoners the vote and other general things like that.
It would be a pity to loose the easy travel stuff however...
They don't know anything about it and yet still have strong opinions.
God forbid, unlike everyone on this forum then.
I don't get why people say we aren't a part of Europe. We're separated by a few thousand meters of shallow water, and even then there's a tunnel making it possible to walk straight to France from here.
Europe itself is just a periphery of the vast continent of Asia, of which we occupy the western end. If Britain isn't part of the continent, does that also mean islands like Sicily, Sardinia, Crete, Japan, and Taiwan are equally divorced from continental affairs?
