Let's hope we finally leap into the true 1080p era (as promised years ago) after cutting corners with 720p-640p.
And hopefully it'll still support 720p for those of us without 1080p TVs.

No, 1920x1080 should be minimum now, so progress can not be stifled

1080p content will still run on 720p or 480i/p tv's...
No, 1920x1080 should be minimum now, so progress can not be stifled
With consoles that still might be much too optimistic. I'd rather have 720p and AA than 1080p and no AA.
And hopefully it'll still support 720p for those of us without 1080p TVs.
Honestly why wouldn't that be the case? It'd be silly if it didn't downscale to 720p/1080i
And hopefully it'll still support 720p for those of us without 1080p TVs.
i can't imagine they'll be limiting the resolution to 1080P.

Yes, because everyone can afford to spend more on a TV than they did on their car. BRILLIANT LOGIC!
Don't think you're aware, but the economy is still shit. Some people can barely swing two grand for a car that they need to get to work. Asking them to buy a 1080P TV is just stupid. That's why my family still has a 480P CRT. It works fine and it was just $450, we cannot afford to buy even a 720P LCD TV let alone a 1080P TV.

Would be AA even be noticeable on TV's (you sit far away from them) Some people have trouble seeing the difference between 720p and 1080p due to the viewing distance of TV's being so ridiculous compared to monitors and tablets
besides more pixels does mean less jageds, so it sorta is a soft version of AA in itself

holy shit you don't need a 1080p tv to play a game running in 1080p
do you think 720p games (ps3, 360) don't run on non-HDTV's or something?

There are many arguments against swapping out your relatively modern TV with a modern TV. But price ain't one. "Not needing one" is better than that. They cost NOTHING.

yeah because forcing higher resolutions really has anything to do with "progress"
At super high resolutions, high viewing distances, and high DPIs (or any combination of the above), shader based AA implementations are an even bigger advantage than they are now (FXAA, MLAA, TXAA etc)

Too bad you could've gotten a nice 1080p set for $350.
yeah because forcing higher resolutions really has anything to do with "progress"
I'll take 60fps 720p over 30fps 1080p any day
My wallet is ready.
I hope this next gen console has some sort of way of running all older games at a higher resolution, probably not.
I wonder if we'll finally have a console with anti aliasing
Hurts my eyes man
I just went and checked, and most PS3 games have antialiasing. Like 53% or so :v:
(couldn't be assed to check 360 games right now)
IIRC the 360 had some kind of thing dedicated entirely to AA.
IIRC the 360 had some kind of thing dedicated entirely to AA.
Well in that case it's not used very often.
I'll take 60fps 720p over 30fps 1080p any day
Do it somewhere else then. I'd be ok with that if they removed the HD from HD consoles and the Next Gen from Next Gen console. It's false advertising. 720p is Not a high definition. It's actually laughably low.
Oooh. D3D11game1 implies it supports DX11, which means we'll finally move on beyond DX9 in PC games. This is nice.
DX11 is a rip-off!
720 is such a stupid name.

Such a shame that a $350 1080P TV will last no more than six months and require binoculars to watch from my couch(Viewing distance ~12-14 feet, 35" is the minimum size before we get eyestrain after watching it), whereas the 480P TV has been going strong for four years now and is perfectly visible. We looked into it. The cheapest TV that would last a decent amount of time and was large enough to actually see was $1400. The really nice 44" 1080P TV we wanted was $2200.
God it must be nice to live in bizarro world where you can buy a reliable 44" 1080P TV for $350...
Wanna know the funniest part about it? Nothing we watch is in HD anyway. Perhaps the Formula 1 races would count, but otherwise that 1080P TV would never be used...and I'm sorry, but spending four figures on a TV for nothing but F1 races that look fine in standard def anyway? You're fuckin' insane. If I had that kinda dosh laying around to blow on entertainment-aimed electronics I'd upgrade my circa 2007 PC, not waste it on a TV that will never see anything above 480P.

I remember when the 360 was first released, MS required all games to run at 720p with 2x AA, but eventually they dropped that requirement so that developers could push more out of the console.
I'm just hoping that the next gen will at the very least run games in 1080p, since that's pretty much the standard for tv's now.

You seem to be taking this really personally, but he's just saying that you can (and he's right) get a 60hz 1080p tv in the range of 30" to 40" for around that much money. Just looking at the Best Buy website, I see quite a few tv's like that.
HDTV's really aren't that expensive anymore, unless you're getting 3D, OLED, or you just want a really goddamned big TV.
And a lot of modern console games don't even render at 720p, so the whole "HD" thing has been bullshit for a while
Yep. This gen was false advertising too.

Oh well sure it should at least be able to run at that resolution, all I meant was that it should also be able at 720p, downscaled or otherwise. As others have already pointed out, it already does, though. I can't see the problem.

I don't think I know what 1080p is then. Because my 1920x1080 monitor was under $200 and I was under the impression it was 1080p
if true, this must surely be based around Atom architecture to fit inside the thermal envelope
what the fuck is this
are you seriously telling me they can't expand the console an inch and fit a decent cooler on it? What's this fashion with game consoles being tiny, it's not like you're gonna move it around all day!
It's about goddamn time for the next generation of consoles. I mean holy fuck shit it's been a long ass time.
Really looking forward to what is going to be capable in the next generation. Also really hope it's a new era of freshness in the mainstream market, more originality please.
Would it not make alot of sense to go with AMD over Intel/Nvidia because of costs and AMD already has a well suited 8 core Piledriver architecture?
no because amd's piledriver was a massive failure and i don't think the price gap between equivalent CPUs between AMD/intel is significant in mass production especially considering microsoft probably has a massive discount from intel for buying in bulk.
