Basically if I'm right then fish is a little like me; absolutely mental, but a decent enough guy who says a bunch of shit wrong - someone who hates the status quo but is too much of a blunt instrument to change it - got into an industry that he thought he'd love then got slapped in the face with a ton of bullshit and lacked the flexibility to change himself to fit into it. If I'm wrong then fish is a straight dick. Because I see something in him I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
While this might all be true, you don't act like a pretentious asshole about things. Fish is notorious for being narcissistic about Fez and his popularity. IIRC The reason why Beer yelled at him in the first place is because Fish basically went to GI and acted like an asshole in an interview. I think Beer was personally offended by that, because he feels like the industry is willing to shut up and get stepped on for access to a hot name. Which was why he ended his rant by asking journalists to boycott interviews/coverage with ill-mannered developers. [editline]28th July 2013[/editline]
He was the poster boy for unprofessionalism. But in an industry that is almost actively hostile to a) character and b) challenging the status quo, I'd love a little unprofessionalism if that's what it brought.
There's a difference between unprofessionalism, though, and flat-out hostility. Fish is a guy who simply can't take criticism, and holds himself in high regards. I highly doubt Fez II would have lived up to any hype that Fez I created.
is this some comedy routine or something because I gotta admit you have me crackin up
I'm not joking. I'm incredibly unsure about what I'm saying and these thoughts are pretty raw but yeah, I genuinely do think this. It's bizarre but I'll stick by it - if I'm wrong then at least I've played devil's advocate for a collective opinion that's overwhelmingly skewed.

Either way this ends up going for me I hope he gets mental help (because he needs help whichever way) and gets back into the games industry, even as a commentator. In fact, I'd prefer him as a commentator, I didn't think much of fez tbh.
he's too stubborn for mental help he'd think he is a master psychiatrist and everyone else in the mental ward are just peons

No, this guy is a dick however you look at it:
I wonder if the "Indie Game the Movie" guys are filming him right now
I can see it now Indie Game: The Movie 2: The Fall of Phil Fish.
I can see it now Indie Game: The Movie 2: The Fall of Phil Fish.
it needs to end like Scarface and have a cocaine-fueled Phil Fish who has totally lost it and falls over his balcony into a pool of water with a giant globe statue that says "Choke on it" glooming overhead
because he's a tremendous asshole to people and then goes "waaah why does everyone hate me you should all kill yourselves" when people call him out on what he is
Sounds like he is doing this because people like you react to it, giving him attention and spreading awareness of his game

Essentially fish is either like me (depressive, says things in socially unacceptable ways, temperamental) and needs help (which I do and freely admit I do) or is like you all say (egotistical douche with a massive superiority complex) and needs help. Either way it's gonna be hard for him in different ways (therapy is hard, I've been and it's difficult to open up to someone so they can revel and help you to fix your faults) - but the guy has... something and it'd be shit if he just faded away.
Phil Fish is my hero.
Phil Fish is my hero.
holy fuck conna honestly? not surprised you posted this [editline]28th July 2013[/editline]
explain what he has seriously, what spark of magic does he have? we don't need a dev that can fling shit at people and make disgusting noises, nor do we need a guy who is essentially an ideas guy believe it or not, the industry (aside from the big 3) is pretty laid back in terms of professionalism, its not fish level assholery but most devs don't do the whole smile and wave routine, fish oversteps his boundaries in so many areas yet has nothing to back anything up
He's probably right in getting out of the industry though tbh - in terms of changing things he's less of a ghandi or MLK and more of a, uh amazing atheist (e.g. in terms of the central premise of his rants correct but believes in a bunch of other extraneous shite (not counting a superiority complex) and has the mannerisms that would convince precisely no one)
Phil Fish is my hero.
not surprising you would say this
He's probably right in getting out of the industry though tbh - in terms of changing things he's less of a ghandi or MLK and more of a, uh amazing atheist (e.g. in terms of the central premise of his rants correct but believes in a bunch of other extraneous shite and has the mannerisms that would convince precisely no one)
Maybe you've seen something I haven't but I don't think I've ever actually seen Phil Fish say anything useful about the gaming industry.
not surprising you would say this
Obviously going against the blatant circlejerk for comic effect. The moral of the story is: don't take everything you read on the internet as somebody's real opinion, it's often the case that people play devil's advocate, especially when there's a bandwagon like this one. It's quite clear that Phil Fish is a douchebag, hence why my post is so obviously satire.
Phil Fish is taking the difficult road of saying the uncomfortable things nobody wants to hear. Nobody likes that guy, because usually you aren't protected from having shit talked about you, either, even if it's valid shit, and nobody likes that. Unfortunately, he has chosen to proclaim himself speaker for the truth, and his ego has gotten the better of him. He's pulling a Steve Jobs (at least in terms of not compromising or being diplomatic with critics -- I've not heard of any abusive behaviour in the Polytron offices or anything), only he doesn't have an Apple II to point to, he's got a NeXT Cube. As I've said early in the thread, I thought Fez was a decent game. But it was not so good that I immediately began fellating my Xbox 360 controller's grips and fantasizing that they were any part of Phil Fish's anatomy. And, he acts like Fez was exactly that and we're being dense for denying his obvious genius.
fez is now sleeping with the fishes rip
I was reading his tweets the other day and I could tell there was something up - I didn't like his game, and I'm not going to say he was a misunderstood genius or something but honestly I think the industry's lost someone here. The guy was misunderstood (as evidenced by the scores of people here just quoting obvious comments made in jest by him and getting all riled up about it), he was foul mouthed, he didn't shut up for anyone, and he took his sweet time making anything. But the thing is, he callled a lot of bullshit out in the gaming industry, he always spoke his mind, he had a sense of humour (albeit one that people didn't get a lot of the time), he hated and wanted to challlenge the status quo, and he shook up a lot of complacent people, even if it was the wrong way. I think that he was a much better guy than you guys give him credit for, and I'll go on record here saying that I saw a little bit of myself in him - good and bad. This is my opinion - you might disagree with it but respect it for what it is :)
Well you've just reinterpreted the inane ramblings of twit with a personality disorder so creatively, that you've shot way past spin doctor and landed in spin surgeon general. [editline]28th July 2013[/editline] You know, it's funny. It sure seems like that every time somebody says something stupid in public, it turns out they were joking all along and we just didn't get it. Sure are a lot of comedians out there.
Well you've just reinterpreted the inane ramblings of twit with a personality disorder so creatively, that you've shot way past spin doctor and landed in spin surgeon general.
I'm a twit with a personality disorder who rambles inanely about bullshit, I probably relate to him in some twisted way.

Behold! The voice of challenging the status quo :v: [editline]28th July 2013[/editline]
I'm a twit with a personality disorder who rambles inanely about bullshit, I probably relate to him in some twisted way.
Trust me, from what I've seen from your Facepunch posts, you're still not dickish and narcissistic like Fish. Even if you're crazy, you're a better person than Fish.
While Fish definitely has anger issues, critics and gamers/consumers are giving an incredibly unwarranted and toxic response. Overall it's really a disgusting situation and I'm disappointed in not only Phil, but everyone else: the people who provoked him, the people who mocked him, and the people who are happy that he's gone. Gaming has lost someone. Even if gaming doesn't need Phil as its savior, there's still a little bit of gaming that's missing.

I wouldn't say tact is essential for being a good person but it's there to make dealing with people go smoother and to make your opinions palatable. Phil fish is many things but his way of dealing people was rougher than a sandpaper condom and his opinions, even if you agreed wholeheartedly with them, weren't the kind of things you'd show to someone to convince them of something.

I bet that he is just making this "fez 2 is cancelled" shit up, and then coming back from nowhere and everyone will praise the new indie game master lord.

i like the guy because he somehow managed to piss off the entire legion of spergs over at r/gaming with basically one sentence.
