Is this thread some social experiment? I see a ton of Phil emulators here.
Ugh, my Facebook feed is just bloated with shit like this... Part of me wants to go in and say what I think, but there's no arguing with these people. Especially considering I am likely completely outnumbered. they're all people from my old Game Design classes, and they all seem to look past the fact that Fish's behavior was pretty much an insult to the very IDEA of independent development.

But don't let your self love blind you to the fact that others may not love your creations as much as you do.
Ding dong, the witch is dead.
Ding dong, the witch is dead.
I think counting Phil Fish as a witch is a bit harsh. A bit of a knob, yes - the real witches would be those board execs who constantly fuck up IP's we love by throwing in DRM that is restrictive, shitty game ideas forced into games to try and make more money, studios with a great history and legacy being shut down due to profit margins after studios fuck them over by making stupid decisions. Those are the real witches, not this guy.
i wonder if he'll wake up one morning and think to himself "wtf did I just do"

Both encourage ridiculous and poisonous business practices and make idiotic decision making as well as piss-poor PR work look like they're fully acceptable things. When you are in a position of power you need to pick your words wisely, and most of all shut up when you can't actually sit and think about what would be worth saying. Gloating about how much money you made and how stupid other people are is childish, moronic and just as bad as enforcing a corporate approach to game design. Even now when he's thrown in the towel, he's still managed to do it in a bad way. He ought to tone it down or outright ignore stuff like this if it bothers him that much but most of all, take at look at himself and think "maybe I ought to get other people to help make decisions with me, both in marketing and game design".
i wonder if he'll wake up one morning and think to himself "wtf did I just do"
I doubt it. I said this in the other big thread, so I'll bring it here
My guess is this is just a big publicity stunt. He's gone for now, and then he's gonna come back, rake in all the publicity and dick choking will ensue.
Honestly, I have a feeling this is all just playing into a big asshole plan of his. He's gonna try to make his comeback as big as the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Letting someone help you make better decisions and tell you when you're fucking up badly is too damaging to the pulsating, oversized ego of someone like Fish.

He is flawed in many ways but really the main problem is that he isn't willing to accept he is flawed and isn't trying to improve. He's done nothing but set a bad example.
just watched this video he's a straight dick - he's a straight dick with some good points (and let me stress I do agree with his point here) which make him automatically better than say reddit but man oh man what a lack of tact [editline]29th July 2013[/editline]
Ugh, my Facebook feed is just bloated with shit like this...
The pink guy's almost on the money tbh
Almost. Yes hating Fez because you don't like Fish is dumb as hell. But no, Fez is not a masterpiece. And it'd be so much worse if Fish got driven off by people for not liking his game, or some other reason, but he was driven off because of his own behavior. He has nobody to blame but himself.
I'd argue he's as damaging to the mind of would-be developers as those execs. Both encourage ridiculous and poisonous business practices and make idiotic decision making as well as piss-poor PR work look like they're fully acceptable things.
I would agree with you on this point. But that would be acknowledging that Phil fish represents the voice of indie game development, which he is not regardless of the number of times he prophesizes himself to be. His fall would be a footnote in the history of game developers, people would walk by the remains of what his career used to be and then go "welp, not going to try that" and move on down their own path, doing their things and dinding their own successes. Phil Fish's case is, simply put, an example of a man who let his success go to his head, which isn't an entirely unheard of story. The true sadness of this is that he has only a single game to his name, but a personality that has already overshadowed the success of that game which hasn't tainted it, but colored it entirely. For instance, Michael Jordan as a person is a horrible douchecanoe, but his legacy of being an amazing basketball player far overshadows him as a person which is why not many care to know what he is like as a person as opposed to him as the legendary basketball player. Phil Fish behaved unprofessionally not just with members of the gaming press (who are also very accountable for their equally unprofessional behaviour in this case), but also his customers. All of this, after having just a single game to his credit, which, regardless of how highly scored or critically acclaimed, is still one game. As for the execs, they get to hide behind the cover of the corporations they represent while making their toxic decisions. For instance, do we know the names of the people responsible for deciding that Simcity should be an always online game? We know those who tried damage controls, but it will always be "EA" or "executive decisions by higher ups" that get quoted. In the end, its the poor game development team (who were always caught between a rock and a hard place throughout the entire duration of development) who gets screwed, the ones whose jobs are axed because of poor performance and are blamed for the shitty sales of the game.
When you are in a position of power you need to pick your words wisely, and most of all shut up when you can't actually sit and think about what would be worth saying. Gloating about how much money you made and how stupid other people are is childish, moronic and just as bad as enforcing a corporate approach to game design.
Couldn't agree more on that front. He began to use his fame/infamy as a yardstick of his success rather than his actual achievement as game developer and ultimately this turned around to bite him.
Even now when he's thrown in the towel, he's still managed to do it in a bad way. He ought to tone it down or outright ignore stuff like this if it bothers him that much but most of all, take at look at himself and think "maybe I ought to get other people to help make decisions with me, both in marketing and game design".
This is exactly why I feel that indie gamedevs need to look at this meltdown with a clinical mindset and treat it as a case study in how not to be as a game developer. You learn more from mistakes and their consequences than you do from victories. How not to behave with your fans, how to take criticism, how to deal with pressure....the number of lessons that can be learned from this man's collapse are a sobering experience from anyone who wants to make a game.
also he probably had the worst hair in videogame history

WHO ARE YOU And I am Pink Guy. I'll admit Masterpiece is a super loaded word but I did really enjoy Fez. I enjoyed it a lot more than many other games that I've played recently in that genre, and I don't think Phil is just "getting what he deserves".

Still one of my favourite jokes in recent weeks: Mmm. Beer battered fish.
Hi Joey.
This is getting weird
If its any consolation you're the most level-headed in that picture.
Though apparently I'm an ignorant ass because I don't want to support someone with the attitude of Phil Fish.
You aren't supporting the company that created it based on one creators opinions. Phil Fish is not the only one being paid for working on Fez.
But he's the one always gloating and shitting in people's faces about the successful sales of the game.
Admittedly, yes, his methods of showing his pride for the video game he helped to create are... lacking in empathy. But I know if a toil of my time, something that I invested my very being in was being absolutely torn apart at every corner because of a few nasty things I'd said in the past, and how I handled them in the present, I'd probably be beating myself up a lot. Often times when people dig themselves holes like this they begin to close off and simply blame everyone else for everything. I don't know. I'm trying to rationalize that's happened without being immensely informed of the entire situation.
If he wanted to stop people from tearing his game apart for previous statements he should've sucked it up, tucked it tail between his legs, admit he fucked up and apologize. Instead he turns around and says FUCK YOU YOU'RE WRONG I'M THE BEST. Just dug the hole deeper and deeper until he ruined his own career. If that's not getting what you deserve... well...
I'm sure that Phil is a good person in the eyes of people who know him at a closer level than most people do. But that doesn't mean much when he still lacks professionalism and decency towards the people who aren't his close friends.
