You mean it broke through the ground so deep it found the grave of an old flash game that did the same exact thing years before it did?
Truly the voice of his generation.
As much as I don't feel inclined to sympathise with an arrogant hipster, what's actually wrong with Fez?
A lot of people bash EA for treating their customers like shit, what makes Phil Fish any different? Is it justified for him to call his customers tools and insult other developers just because he's ~indie~ and ~artistic~?
He literally acts like a child going through an autistic meltdown when someone questions him.
I think it is different.
You have EA which is a huge corporation who have share holders they have to go back to and justify their statements, but then you have fish which really has no one relying on him all that much. It's one person acting insane when he's one of the only ones affects, but then you have hundreds perhaps thousands of people who can feel the reproductions from those that have voice in the company of EA. There is more at stake with something like EA versus some guy on twitter who made a game and overreacts all the time.
I don't mind Phil's insanity because it's just phil's insanity, not a company that has entire departments to make themselves look as good as possible.
I bash EA for that because they hire teams that their job is specifically about customer relations and market strategies. Because when they treat their customers badly it has a big impact. Fish is a guy on his own who has become the brunt of thousands of people's criticisms. And if he can't even separate himself from the game, he's in a bad situation, but it's still his situation. I don't feel like it affects anyone really if Fish is a bit pissed off.
You shouldn't take everything you read online so literally. I doubt he wanted you, specifically, to suffocate on his cock.

There is absolutely no way you can rightfully assume that he doesn't. Quit talking out of your ass as if you're some sort of PhD.
It seems to me at this point, you're more or less excusing his horrible behaviour. How aren't you? You're saying "well he didnt mean it like that, those are meaningless words he used" but he was rude and disrespectful to many people. He doesn't deserve respect just because you think he deserves it.
When someone acts like a twat, they're a twat. No need to make a mountain out of a molehill but don't try to act like he isn't himself, a total shitlord.
I can actually understand what you're talking about Take Opal, because when I was younger I was the weird kid that sometimes said mean things and was picked on by everyone. It made me furious and so I lashed out at everyone even harder, and surprise surprise, things just got worse and worse for me. I eventually realized that whatever emotional problems I had weren't actually everyone else's problems, they were mine, and that when I acted like an asshat, that's all that people would see me as. Things didn't get better for me until I actually started acting like a better person. People are a lot more inclined to care about your problems if you treat them respectfully, and I think that's the lesson Phil Fish needs to learn as well.

Holy shit half a page snuck up on me while I was typing this.
When I was a kid I was such an asshole too. Until I was midway in High School my social interactions were summed up by "let's be an asshole to everyone" going by the logic that if someone really wanted to be my friend he'd just get over it. It didn't really work well until high school where some people clearly told me how much of an asshole I was instead of just ignoring me and it pushed me to stop and apologize to everyone I knew.
Shit only changes if you want to change, and by now Phil Fish has had plenty of chances to stop being such a cunt. People have made it really clear that he is arrogant and insulting and he's only decided to brush it off and insult everyone even more, nothing will change until he decides to change and he's decided to just keep being a spoiled overreacting manchild who's full of himself.
As much as I don't feel inclined to sympathise with an arrogant hipster, what's actually wrong with Fez?
In reality, nothing. It's a game that's friendly, colorful, has somewhat confusing puzzles but once you get used to the way it works it's pretty easy. There's no penalty for death, and overall the main gimmick of the game just gets boring after a while. But that's obviously subjective. A lot of people don't like it because Phil acts like it's the best thing ever created. I don't care what anyone says, Fez is a perfectly normal game that doesn't suit the desires of every person, it's just Phil has absolutely given me all the reason to not buy it, because I don't want to support such an asshole financially.
In the end, anyone who complains or defends against the criticism sent Phil's way is stepping on their own toes. Even if Phil isn't such a bad guy underneath that asshole shell of his, he needs to learn how to properly communicate with the public. Even if he's mentally unstable, criticism is what he needs in order to learn that what he's doing is wrong to begin with. Without criticism, even from one's self, there is no desire to improve. It's clear Phil has no desire to criticize himself in a gesture where he feels the need to improve, so by god let the people do it for him.
its a good day
Can someone help me out here and tell me why everyone here unanimously hates Fez so much? I've never played it or even seen any gameplay and yet anyone I come across says what an enormous bag of wank it is. Someone enlighten me please?
I feel sorry for the guy, yeah he comes across as a bit of a dick but does it really warrant mass bullying over the internet?
As much as I don't feel inclined to sympathise with an arrogant hipster, what's actually wrong with Fez?
Despite its author, it's really just your average pixelated retro indie platformer with a pretentious "plot", no penalty to death whatsoever, and a single gimmick supposed to carry on the whole game that gets boring within an hour of playing it because there is nothing supporting it and it never evolves.
The game pretends to be a retro platformer hommage like so much other indie games but it lacks a lot of proper elements from these retro platformers it's trying to be, starting with a goal, enemies and innovation.
I really enjoyed Fez. Despite knowing about Phil Fish and what a cunt he is. Once you get absorbed into a game you kind of forget the hubris surrounding it. But it's pretty obvious he can't conduct himself properly in this industry. Yes, he gets hate but he started it. Shame, because I was looking forward to Fez II. He has a keen sense of design and atmosphere.

to me, it isn't bad
it's just so fucking overrated and created by a dipshit of a developer
honestly, this game is another 'deep' 2D game you find off newgrounds or armorgames as flashgames except it has more content
its fun, but it's nothing special, and the developer is an asshole who thinks hes cool cause he developed another 2D indie game.
I feel bad for the guys working on fez 2 who found out their game is cancelled because phil fish is acting like a child.
Anyone read their website?

FEZ II is cancelled.
i am done.
i take the money and i run.
this is as much as i can stomach.
this is isn’t the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign.
you win.

I love it when the bully becomes the victim
As much as I don't feel inclined to sympathise with an arrogant hipster, what's actually wrong with Fez?
It's way too easy and nothing about the game is really all that notable aside from a single gimmick that the entire game focuses on (a common problem amongst indie titles.) It also kinda has the same problem a lot of bad indie games have where in place of actually having clever game design or an interesting story or anything like that it uses a somewhat unique or uncommon artstyle to give the impression that it's a special snowflake, not like all the other shallow meaningless games, and pretends to have some deep meaningful message that doesn't actually exist and puts on a facade of artistic merit when in actuality there is none.
Personally the reason I don't like FEZ isn't really to do with the game itself so much as that it's pretty much just a perfect example of everything I think is wrong with the indie scene right now. Maybe I'm being too harsh, maybe it really is a good game, that's just kind of the impression I got when I played it.
Problem with fez is also that it's not free. There are plenty of good experimental artsy flash games out there and they come out as completely free, made by developers who use the fame gained by these games to release full charged titles that deserve the pricetag. First example that comes to mind is Aether, which is completely free on Newgrounds and essentially just an experimental exploration game, and the fame gained by this game and by plenty other experiments by the same authors led to the release of full titles like super meatboy and binding of isaac which were actual full game with much more effort put into it.
Fish just assumed his game would sell based on the pretty art and relaxing atmosphere while it was obviously not enough to convince the majority of the player base.

It's not a game even though people claim it to be. It has no challenge in it's platforming, no combat, nothing, and it doesn't punish you even if you do somehow fail it's miserably easy 'platforming.' The entire game is based around a single simple 'revolutionary' mechanic that was done much better years before Fez by a flash game on Newgrounds.
And worst of all, even though the game is undeniably mediocre, it receives awards from every corner of the Earth for doing absolutely nothing at all.
[editline]27th July 2013[/editline]
Honestly, I hate what it's shown more than what it is. It has shown us that our current game 'critics' are actually just a bunch of hacks that have no place in our industry.

yes, telling people to "kill themselves" and "choke on my dick" is a bit of a dick

lol, he thinks it was some kind "long, bloody campaign".
it was him saying stupid shit, people telling him that what he's saying is stupid shit, and then him having a bitch fit.
There is a god
God what a drama queen. Why does he react so abruptly to everything?

Funny thing is, it was done way beforehand too
If i remember correctly, there was a game AVGN talked about that was from a couple generations ago that used a very similar mechanic
There is a god
If there was then Fish would have an actual head on his shoulders instead of an asshole.

There is also a game called Crush for PSP that is a puzzle game based aroiund switching between a 2D and 3D perspective to get through puzzles.
A free game called Perspective takes the same idea but switches between first person view and fixed camera, dynamically creating platforms for a character to move around on. It's really challenging and brings new concepts to its puzzle at every new board.
