God damn, this fish is oversalted. That was meant to be my dinner.
Can someone bring us up to speed on the entire Phil Fish debacle? Like why he's garnered so much hate? I get that he released a game most people don't think is that great, or at least not worth as much praise as it has recieved; and I know that he's made discouraging comments about the PC, then proceeded to release Fez on PC after discovering the 360's shit policies on updates. I get not liking him, but the hate he has seems so massive, there must be something more to it.
I think it started when he dissed Japanese titles.
yeah stating the truth about how big a douchebag fish is, how could he
his conduct was unacceptable for a supposed games journalist Fish is an immature manchild most of the time but he's just a 1:1 reflection of every facet of the gaming industry
It's generally considered unprofessional to say things like what Beer said, but i'd be lying if I said they weren't accurate.
Then he should have just left it at that instead of stooping to his level and resorting to dick-waving
I think it started when he dissed Japanese titles.
It originally became cool to hate him when Fez was delayed, and then it basically just became a meme
Nice to see that /v/ are working hard... [IMG_thumb]http://gyazo.com/6931576e5fa262094ec6d60a9857d097.png[/IMG_thumb]
It originally became cool to hate him when Fez was delayed, and then it basically just became a meme
having been watching fez's development since ive heard of it four years before it was released, i became a little wary of who was getting my money when fez told a critic "i won money at igf, suck my dick and choke on it" i later heard stories from the team meat devs about the guy and i really do not think phil fish is a nice guy. i'm not sure where youre going with this but youre making it seem that nobody is justified in disliking phil fish's behavior as a person
Just checked my twitter and saw this the image he is talking about
Wow look at this winner he's trending on twitter bitches can shut the fuck up now #philfish #swag
IF people start blaming AnnoyedGamer for the cancellation of Fez, then they're fucking retarded. That cancellation is all on Phil himself. It's his fucking childish response to a misdirected stream of profane criticism. Profanity that barely reached his own level of profanity to the damn knees. Marcus was too quick on the Trigger, but Phil is reacting like a fucking child when all he should have done was point out to Marcus where and why he was wrong. That's always where Phil fucks up. Just goes on a profanity tirade instead of calmly reasoning with people. I mean. His stupidity and rash demeanor puts Marcus in a way positive light, despite his misdirected retorik.
Get into a creative business and have a hissy fit when you get criticized? Especially when you act like a child who isn't getting what it wants? Getting shit for being shit to others? Gee well I'd never figure that would happen. I'm happy he's not making games again.

...he just can't stop being an attention whore. Phil Fish, all joking and pointless drama aside, I hope that you will take this opportunity, with your career change, to get well. Yes, I probably am an asshole who fucks his own mother, but we're not talking about me, Phil.
It originally became cool to hate him when Fez was delayed, and then it basically just became a meme
I'm not allowed to hate people because of their terrible attitudes and overinflated egos? Nah, I'm just some mindless cog in the hatred machine for no reason!
It's not a game even though people claim it to be. It has no challenge in it's platforming, no combat, nothing, and it doesn't punish you even if you do somehow fail it's miserably easy 'platforming.' The entire game is based around a single simple 'revolutionary' mechanic that was done much better years before Fez by a flash game on Newgrounds.
There is honestly more to FEZ than platforming if you aim to complete it. It turned into a pen and paper ordeal for me, with riddles (written and visual) to solve, and button codes to hunt down. It isn't conventional gameplay by modern standards, it definitely reminded me of older games that required me to manually map out my progress as I played. It had its flaws, for sure. Travelling between worlds was cumbersome, and I would have preferred a narrative to drive me towards/through places — I missed a good quarter of the levels on my first playthrough. But I enjoyed FEZ a ton. It is a damned decent game, but you have to be willing to keep pushing.
i was thinking p much this the entire time
He's a self-entitled game artist. He didn't even make most of FEZ - Renaud did all the heavy lifting for him.
It's generally considered unprofessional to say things like what Beer said, but i'd be lying if I said they weren't accurate.
Who gives a shit if It was unprofessional, The industry lacks character when people try hard professionalism and there's some things that you can't sugar coat and sound much better in a completely negative manner.
And this is why you hire a community manager as a developer.
Well whoever this guy is, he doesn't even understand the point of what he is (was) doing I study so I can eventually be Game Designer at some point, and I don't know how to react to this guy, who just gives up making games because he discovered the Internet in 2013. Hope he'll something else to do that he'll enjoy (besides yelling at people), because for what I see he clearly wasn't making games because he liked it
having been watching fez's development since ive heard of it four years before it was released, i became a little wary of who was getting my money when fez told a critic "i won money at igf, suck my dick and choke on it" i later heard stories from the team meat devs about the guy and i really do not think phil fish is a nice guy. i'm not sure where youre going with this but youre making it seem that nobody is justified in disliking phil fish's behavior as a person
could it be possible that zeke was phil fish all along?
I was reading his tweets the other day and I could tell there was something up - I didn't like his game, and I'm not going to say he was a misunderstood genius or something but honestly I think the industry's lost someone here. The guy was misunderstood (as evidenced by the scores of people here just quoting obvious comments made in jest by him and getting all riled up about it), he was foul mouthed, he didn't shut up for anyone, and he took his sweet time making anything. But the thing is, he callled a lot of bullshit out in the gaming industry, he always spoke his mind, he had a sense of humour (albeit one that people didn't get a lot of the time), he hated and wanted to challlenge the status quo, and he shook up a lot of complacent people, even if it was the wrong way. I think that he was a much better guy than you guys give him credit for, and I'll go on record here saying that I saw a little bit of myself in him - good and bad. This is my opinion - you might disagree with it but respect it for what it is :)
Good. Phish made a dime a dozen 2D Platformer where all the important code and music was done by other people. I hope Disasterpeice, Renaud, and the people at Trapdoor are no longer burdened by a designer with no vision.
Basically, I think the guy is justified in A LOT of what he says - he's nowhere near the right person to say the stuff he says and he's not the most likeable guy but I do empathise with him. He's on the right track but he's just not the person to change the status quo - I'd admire the fuck out of him for sticking it out in the industry but it was obvious that he was going to start hating it so I respect him for getting out. IDK I just feel something about him was different and that he was misunderstood. [editline]28th July 2013[/editline]
fresh from wikipedia
wow a wikipedia article snarkily edited on the night of a major controversy
This guy really deserves no respect..
Who gives a shit if It was unprofessional, The industry lacks character when people try hard professionalism and there's some things that you can't sugar coat and sound much better in a completely negative manner.
Phil Fish is a guy that really needs to wake up/cool down/get help. But, this gaming journalist did not act professionally at all. He goes on for three minutes belittling Blow and Fish, when he could have put forward a clear, concise, and straightforward argument about how Fish is acting ungrateful. Realistically, picking arguments with your journalistic subjects is unprofessional, unless they blatantly offend you (i.e. "Wow Anderson Cooper is a fucking faggot."). Fish obviously acted like an asshole to the press, and there's no problem calling him out on his pretentious fuckery. But Beer's rants and disses are a disservice to, essentially, a floundering journalistic enterprise which sacrifices quantity for quality.
good fuck this faggot i can't wait for him to come crawling back with whatever horse shit he has only to be laughed at for being a huge fucking cunt at least authors wait until they have like 10 successful books to be a cunt this guy just hops right into it after making one eh platformer that was majorly ripped from a flash game that's free
I wonder if the "Indie Game the Movie" guys are filming him right now
Basically if I'm right then fish is a little like me; absolutely mental, but a decent enough guy who says a bunch of shit wrong - someone who hates the status quo but is too much of a blunt instrument to change it - got into an industry that he thought he'd love then got slapped in the face with a ton of bullshit and lacked the flexibility to change himself to fit into it. If I'm wrong then fish is a straight dick. Because I see something in him I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

But in an industry that is almost actively hostile to a) character and b) challenging the status quo, I'd love a little unprofessionalism if that's what it brought.
