People are proud of things they're related to. A family has pride for their children's successes, for example. On career days children will talk proudly of their parents careers if it's something great.

Except that's different. Being proud of your children is totally understandable because you made whatever the child is doing possible too.
Furthermore it's a pretty direct concept. Your kids, you brought them up. Proud. A-OK.

And then they are trying to be proud of something as abstract as a nation, a thing that most scientists are not even able to define properly. A thing that has as many definitions as there are people in the world.
The country/nation people are "proud" of is not of their doing. They were born into it, it would exist without them and in the case of the average nationalist it would be even better without them. How can they be proud of somthing they didn't create, of something where their own influence, even if it existed, is so so small no one ever would be able to quantify it?
