Malicious tweet gives journalist Kurt Eichenwald a seizure

If you have to activate someone's health issues to make a jape of them, then you're a terrible person and should be charged on a level of assault.
There actually is an option in Twitter to disable any autoplay.

Puts a play button over any media content.

Someone should direct this setting to him.
Though I'm sure some cunning mind will do something like replace the first few frames of a seizure gif with something innocuous.
Well yeah, it's not actually his fault but considering how life dangerous these things are, how it happened before, and how you can't really stop people from trolling
You can stop them by arresting them and imprisoning them for literally trying to cause an epileptic to have a seizure that could potentially kill them.
You shouldn't have to be even slightly tech savvy to use Twitter just because you have a disability. Most people probably don't install browser extensions, or know how to.
Eh, generally its on the person with the illness to know how to deal with their issue, whether its "install an epilepsy addon" or "disable autoplay in twitter settings". If you have allergies you don't expect everything to fit your needs if you dont ask first. It'd be nice if there was a well known addon that doctors cooperated with informing their patients to use.
Honestly if you're photosensitive and you are prone to seizures why on earth are you browsing twitter in anything other than a text-only mode? Still that guy who tweeted the gif is a dickhead.

If your workplace doesn't have epipens available it's a health and safety violation, iirc. I agree with you, but given clear intent i can't say the victim was in the wrong

"Regardless of your video autoplay setting, video, GIFs and Vines will always autoplay in Moments"
I'm not Twitter savvy, does this not make the setting completely useless?
Oh, neat that this comes up: There are actually a few short stories about this by the author/set in that universe.
They're pretty good, so I highly recommend reading them if you're even a little interested in the concept.
I love stories written in that style, any other good authors/places to find them? (other than the scp wiki)
You know, I think it would be rather popular and/or profitable program if someone managed to make a system-wide program that smooths or truncates pixels of a video output based on common seizure stimuli, maybe even expand it to audio-based stimuli. I have a friend that sudden, very loud sounds will cause them to have a seizure. An unfortunate side-effect would be pretty severe audio/display lag though.
2016 seems like a particularly visceral Black Mirror episode. I've never seen so many ways in which technology can be used for things like this.

ever since gifs existed you could have done this to someone?
like, is 2016 to blame for loud seizure ytmnd's too?

I only found this one via TV Tropes, and the other material set in that universe that I found is more traditional (similarly to how SCP has short stories (or content resembling those) in the attachments of many articles).
Not everyone that has epilepsy gets seizure from flashing lights, i can stare at that all day and nothing will happen even if i was off meds. Doctors don't know the cause of epilepsy for a lot of people or the brain abnormalities that cause them.
Can attest, also have epilepsy, don't get seizures from blinking light (they tested it), but they also don't know what causes mine outside of sleep deprivation :v:
So is this case a situation of someone trying to do harm by way of an old wives tale, and having it actually work? Or is it publicly known that Mr. Eichenwald reacts badly to this specific form of image.
There are types of epilepsy which are known to be triggered by flashing lights/certain patterns or sound (usually tested for explicitly), so it's definitely a real thing, but for a lot of people it's unknown :v:

Those weren't created specifically to be used against a single person.
Which leads to the question why the hell he either didn't disable autoplay or clicked it on purpose while knowing that it is hazardous to his health. Sure, it wasn't nice of the guy who sent him that at all, but how does someone still fall for something that oblivious despite having a close call before, according to his own words.
While yeah he's kind of an idiot for not making use of blocking autoplay just for his general health's sake (like what if someone forgot to throw a seizure warning into their post and totally didn't mean to give him one), I don't think he should be forced to enable what's essentially a personal preference option just to prevent someone actively trying to genuinely hurt him.
