Most of the bull would be processed into meat, tallow, leather and bones, with a relatively small waste percentage. The only reason to stop a slaughterhouse is due to barbaric practises - such as not restunning, or following strict Halal / Kosher (which I am against due to the required "animal must be conscious") rules. Also, I'm against excess consumption of meat and animal products where there is a good alternative. One portion of meat a day is good enough for anyone, whilst still meating dietary requirements. aren't people seriously overstating the "national heritage", "massive part of spanish culture" thing here? i've been to the catalan region (including barcelona), where this ban has taken place, multiple times in my life and only once have I noticed any kinda of public display showing a love of bullfighting... and that was just the bullfight on TV quietly in the corner of a bar some posters seem to be treating this like the national sport has been banned or something

Saw a bullfight in Spain once. Was interesting, however being extremely onesided it was kinda predictable, I guess I just didn't get the appeal of the violence (didn't really feel anything for the bull, but I didn't feel much excitement either). Same can't be said for a 7 year old kid I had in front of me though, he was screaming "kill it/maim it/slaughter it" the whole time, jumping around and every time there was a spurt of blood he went absolutely batshit. Then when the matador left the arena he threw the severed bull ear to the kid, who held it over his head (still heavily dripping blood, mind you) and screamed like a madman ("Blood for the Blood God!" would have fit perfectly).

I think people need to realize that if they think this is a "big" part of Spanish culture, they haven't seen or know much about Spain. Sure, it's a major sporting event for the more traditionalists in Spain, but it isn't a game-breaker.

To some of the people defending the "culture" of it and how that out weighs the cruelty... Just replace everything that's done to the bull is being done to a giant stupid kid with horns. It's not smart enough to know exactly what the fuck is happening but it's obviously alive, it must have some type of rudimentary thought, it must know that it's being stabbed repeatedly, slowly drained of it's blood, drugged so it's even more confused, and then made terribly angry and scared, then tossed out into a large area where people are screaming and shouting at you and there's that one fucker with the cape. Animals supposedly can at least feel some sort of emotion. They can be depressed, angry, scared or any number of things if we're right. Just because it isn't smart enough or able to say "hey can you guys like stop stabbing me and shit and let me go cuz this isn't fair" doesn't mean we should go ahead and do it anyways.
