• World's rarest language on verge of extinction

Keeping languages alive nowadays is a pointless pursuit. Sure there is merit in recording them down, translating them into English or Chinese and then cataloguing them. But most languages nowadays are useless, creating barriers to communication and wasting time and money. They should be recorded down, but it shouldn't be taught to people. All languages develop in isolation from each other and it is simply not possible to teach languages as the world shrinks. Money could be wasted on teaching them but most people won't use it and simply use the language they had from birth. Whenever people like it or not essentially all languages save for a select few will die out.
People should only speak Chinese,English, and Spanish.
Fixed. Chinese has much much more speakers. Everybody in the world should learn those 4 languages, then once everybody knows it we simply phase out languages and merge parts until we have a single language for the entire human race. From then on we translate all historical texts and language, store the old languages and store the translated ones.

Who cares, it should be saved, recorded, documented, remembered at some level just so we don't forget. We shouldn't let go of our history so easy, once you do, it's gone forever. We need to remember everything we can before we destroy everything that isn't the immediate version of us. I can't believe you facepunch, when the fuck did you become so anti-intellectual?
According to Sobotnik, the only thing that matters is money. I suppose we should close all schools since they teach things that waste money.

The only thing I said was to eventually have humans speaking a single language but with all the other ones recorded down. Those twats are too lazy to do any science or maths, and instead have quasi-intellectual things such as English so they still sound smart and important. You can't do anything with an English degree. Theres 3 people I know who graduated with English degrees and ended up cleaning hotels or driving limos for people. Meanwhile the real intellectuals learn science and math, and solve practical problems instead of discussing 1920s feminist literature or writing essays about postmodernism or some shit like that.
I don't know about you but I would love a secret language the common folk could never understand. Debating over it changes nothing, it's still going to be preserved.

Yeah, anecdotal evidence works both way dumbass Yeah, i know you don't think of entertainment as a valuable profession, but it is, and you're not any sort of authority on anything as far as I've seen.
I think it should be preserved, I'm personally not bothered, but if somebody else wants to preserve it, I can sure see their reason.
"Two of them narrowly escaped death during a flood and the other was living next to a volcano when it erupted"
why would you live next you a volcano
LET'S JUST ALL LEARN C++ FOR WHEN THE COMPUTER RULES OVER HUMANITY LOl
Binary you mean? Chances are robots will talk in binary, because c++ requires compiling first.
If they are so worried about it dieing, just gather those people and work to write down the entire language so if they get injured or die, people can pass the language on.
This thread really makes me sad. I can understand how you can think that this language doesn't matter, and maybe you're right, but where is the harm in preserving it. If someone is willing to catalogue it then what is the harm. It's like a hobby. This forum has a whole sub-forum on video games, yet you chastise recording a dying language. Neither of them really add much to society in and of themselves, but they are still fun to take part in for the interested parties. And these people who seem to think some part of history is not worth remembering. This is such bullshit. Sure, not everything is worth teaching, but it is worth saving. Even if it's oral history, or not written down it is worth study. Even if it is a complete lie it is worth study. History isn't just what happened but how it happened and how events shaped how we see it today. Say you have a story that is complete bullshit but nothing else tells you otherwise. One day you find some information that proves the original story to be bullshit. It is still worth studying the original story to find out why the story doesn't match up with what happened. Even if you delete all your emails, you still have some recollection in your head, and that is history, even if you never use the memory. I don't like saying this since it's kind of elitist, but some of you could use taking a real history class, not some piss excuse that just has you read someone else's theories and regurgitate them onto a piece of paper.

I made a language with my twin so I win.
I'm all for recording it down, it's just that new generations should only be taught useful languages rather than small crappy ones like gaelic.
Well we aren't recording it for everyone to learn but if someone wants to get a Phd in linguistics then we should try and give them as much to study from as possible. There is no way we can teach it to someone. It is too late to do that. They are more recording it for it's phonetic and syntactical value.
I'm all for recording it down, it's just that new generations should only be taught useful languages rather than small crappy ones like gaelic.
Literally nobody has argued that it should be taught in schools, so I'm finding it hard to understand why you're so distraught.
Literally nobody has argued that it should be taught in schools, so I'm finding it hard to understand why you're so distraught.
Because people seem to think that the languages are important when all they are is a method of communication spoken by barely anything and the language has little use in science or technology.

You want to strip away everything that's not in the name of science or technology?

All they want to do is to document the language before it is lost forever, not get a hundred people to speak it and revive its use. jesus christ people [editline]27th April 2011[/editline]
Keeping languages alive nowadays is a pointless pursuit. Fuck that shit. Lets all speak newspeak.

No one needs to teach it, but it should exist one way or the other. [editline]26th April 2011[/editline]
Fuck that shit.
