learning.
Well, she played guitar on the boat, that's one thing. When her sail ripped during a storm, she also managed to fix it. She's learned some things, gained discipline, patience and above all, the initiative to actually DO something. I think that that's more than school will probably teach you at that age.
I actually obeyed the law and didn't throw a hissy fit because I wasn't allowed to do what I want, leaving me in a steady position on the job market as I actually finished school. It's mandatory to go to school till you're 18 here, she got an exception. She ran away from home because the government initially wouldn't let her leave, she quit studying on the boat as she had agreed to because she couldn't be arsed to do it and has outright lied in order to gain sympathy for her cause. Congrats that she did it, but if you add all the above together you can hardly say this has been positive overall.
Bek houwe lul, what she did was awesome, and id rather have 10 people like her then 1 who stayed in school. Oh and since we appear to be taking about what we love to do: I am moving to Australia By myself for half a year to graduate in 2 weeks.
id bang her
Did this for the past 3 years, planing to go on the year-long offshore trip to Osaka, Japan at some point( 4.53 in the vid)
Some young people from the US recently did a very similar thing, and they sailed to our island in the Scottish Hebrides. A long trip, but it must have been awesome for them.
I remember your thread you made before you set sail to Hawaii. When BDA, Zeke and me made a fictional crew. [editline]26th January 2012[/editline] In all reality though I hope to be able to get some basic sailing lessons when I eventually move to the coast for college. Hopefully I'll have enough practice to do some adventure sailing of my own after I get a graduate degree.
Hey what the fuck I thought I was able to get it on your crew :saddowns:
I'd be a bit more impressed if she wasn't aided by you know, the fantastic technology at our tips. it reminds me of the Australian girl who did this, who said one of the more trying times was 'when her hair straightener went overboard' [editline]28th January 2012[/editline] Or maybe if she worked hard for years to buy this boat, instead of coming from a sailing family and getting the boat and so on. [editline]28th January 2012[/editline] Let's be honest, after saying around the world, this is not what you expect of a highlight
Highlights of her trip include 47 days of sailing the Indian Ocean, which left her with unsteady legs when she docked in Durban, South Africa, where she walked up and down the pier several times for practice.
Golly she walked up and down the pier because she was used to the rocking of the sea. I think if you did this without modern technology it would incredibly impressive, and then these young teenagers would be able to regale us with tales of how they ended up a few hundred nm off course because they weren't as good as they thought with dead reckoning or they lost their sextant. As opposed to how it is easier to play the flute than the guitar at sea. [editline]28th January 2012[/editline]
As whiny and "edgy" as it may have sounded to start out with (I don't wannaaa go to school, I wanna saaail), she doesn't seem to need school that much now. She succeeded in life. She achieved her life dream. She's been dreaming of sailing around the world, and she did it. Kudos to her, absolutely.
Let's be honest, she doesn't need school because she doesn't need a job because her parents have subsidized her life. I wish I was lucky enough to be able to sail whenever and wherever I wanted without silly things like 'money' getting the way. Last year a quadriplegic man circumnavigated Australia, by himself. He wants to sail around the world. Now that's something to be impressed about.

Sailing is not easy regardless of all the gear. Doing it solo especially.
