I think some of you guys are confusing discipline with abuse. Teaching a kid some discipline by spanking it [U]only as a last resort[/U], that I (somewhat) agree with.

Fear of punishment is present in both of your examples, which is still wrong. You're supposed to do what's right because it's right and avoid doing things that are wrong because they're wrong. Being rewarded or punished for it should be irrelevant.
