A 13-year-old boy from Preston has become the youngest person ever to successfully carry out atomic fusion.
Jamie Edwards built a nuclear reactor before successfully smashing two hydrogen atoms together, making helium through nuclear fusion.
Video in link.
I used to know this kid. It's a pretty big deal for my school. He has got an all expenses paid trip to New York to appear on the Letterman show, the school is scheduled for a visit by Prince Andrew and our headmaster was invited onto the One Show.
I know this is nearly 20 days late but I haven't seen anyone else put this up so I am.

If he's capable of building a makeshift fusion reactor, he's DEFINITELY a smart lad.
A real life Tony Stark.
my biggest accomplishment when i was 13 was hitting the wall opposite of me when ejaculating. i'd say this reactor is probably equal to that

He is. He did his brothers homework.
His brother was doing a GCSE science task and the kid was in Year 5 (9-10)
My biggest accomplishment when I was thirteen was developing a powerful resistance to chemical warfare.
Why rate friendly? I'm ahead of the game if shit starts to fly.
Let's just hope this goes better than David Hahn's attempt.

Might wanna fix that link.
This did go well, he created fusion.
Jeez, my biggest science related accomplishment at 13 was shocking myself with 20kV from a TV flyback transformer
Problem is it's using commercial grade kit, anyone with a smidgen of scientific knowhow and the money to buy the kit could do it.. he just happens to be the youngest that has done it.

He has autism spectrum or something, surely?
He has autism spectrum or something, surely?
or for all we know it might be the second coming of Commander Keen.
He has autism spectrum or something, surely?
Misconception, they are plenty of 'savants' who are perfectly ordinary people (besides being able to do these incredible mental feats).
He has autism spectrum or something, surely?
Hey you! Yes you! Screw you man.
Also sad that it was a kit, I would have loved to see this guy build one from scratch.
He has autism spectrum or something, surely?
huh?
I made model rockets and set a field on fire once when I was 13.
I was more concerned with no-scoping n00bs when I was 13

Sign me up for the next launch, Doc Goddard! :v:
some time ago i read this story about a guy making something like that from the Americium that's inside smoke detectors.
i can tell you , that did not end well for him. Radiation burns everywhere.
To bad i cant find the story :(

Around that age i was planning on somthing like that, even started up buying the parts, never happened however as i could not afford the Steel chamber (at around £2000 is all i could find)
I still have the Diffusion pumps and high voltage gear i was planning to use to do it.
Russia is interested.
They are.
A russian news company is coming into school next week.

I think he will mysteriously go missing in an unmarked black van and wake up in crimea in a week
I wasn't aware you could buy a commercial nuclear fusion kit

Oh wow, I didn't even have to go on the Deepweb

It's completely legal and harmless (except for the massive amounts of electricity you have to put in).

FP Nuclear Energy is slightly more cost-intensive than FP Space Program, but I'm sure with all our technical expertise we could do it.
Admittedly I'd follow a CANDU design because heavy water purification is (much) easier than uranium enrichment. And Pentium is sitting on a load of uranium ore out in Kelowna.
[editline]21st March 2014[/editline]
Let's ignore the fact operating a nuclear reactor is strictly illegal tin the MetroVancouver area and BC in general and uranium mining in the Okanagan is also not permitted to my knowledge.

It isn't even a massive amount of energy, its just a high voltage at a low current, he is likely using less then a toaster's power usage for the actual power into it, probibly a 500-1500W more for the vacuum pump and diffiusion pump. So still less then the power supply of a single 13A socket.
