FP Nuclear Energy is slightly more cost-intensive than FP Space Program, but I'm sure with all our technical expertise we could do it. Admittedly I'd follow a CANDU design because heavy water purification is (much) easier than uranium enrichment. And Pentium is sitting on a load of uranium ore out in Kelowna. [editline]21st March 2014[/editline] Let's ignore the fact operating a nuclear reactor is strictly illegal tin the MetroVancouver area and BC in general and uranium mining in the Okanagan is also not permitted to my knowledge.
Wait what, is that for real? I mean given who it is I wouldn't be surprised but..
He has autism spectrum or something, surely?
I didn't realize that having a penchant for science at a young age automatically made you autistic.
He just made a fusor, he isn't generating power. Fusors arent complicated.
Wait what, is that for real? I mean given who it is I wouldn't be surprised but..
The area of Canada he's in has massive uranium deposits. And as far as I'm aware the BC government doesn't allow for uranium mining so its all just sitting there. Technically he doesn't have any, but could easily fill a bucket with impure oreos.
I recall a kid doing this a long time ago here in the States. Called the Radioactive Boy Scout a young David Hahn built his own reactor in the 70's at age 17. Unfortunately, without the knowledge of how to properly contain and maintain it, the surrounding shed became irradiated and had to be quarantined and cleaned up by professionals. Crazy stuff, though. Love it. Goes to show you that no one, no matter how young or old(and handicaps set aside), anyone can do anything. Edit: Skimmed through and still didn't notice the other two posts about Mr. Hahn. On another note; his latest mug shot (arrested for stealing minute amounts of radioactive material from his apartment building's smoke detectors) shows signs of possible radioactive poisoning.
Goes to show you that no one, no matter how young or old(and handicaps set aside), anyone can do anything.
Depends on what's in your head
I'd be more impressed if he built a working polywell reactor. The Farnsworth-Hirsch fusor is actually commercially manufactured as neutron sources for hospitals. The most difficult part would be creating the necessary vacuum required for this to work. You need specialized pumps to get enough air out of the reactor to use a small enough amount of D-T mix that it won't cost an arm and a leg to fuel up. The second most difficult part would be handling the tritium in a way that doesn't cause a leak or exposure, which can cause some nasty beta radiation burns. I personally lack the mechanical skills and tools to build one, but i understand them enough that i could.
If he's capable of building a makeshift fusion reactor, he's DEFINITELY a smart lad.
This isn't really a makeshift fusion reactor in the same way uranium ore with a geiger counter next to it isn't a power plant. Really this is just a science project with hard to get, expensive equipment. The impressive part is he taught himself all the skills to work with the electronics and put it together and whatnot.
uhm what is this safe? can we really trust a 13 year old boy with that kind of technology? iceland is pretty close to the UK so this makes me nervous, jujst look at chernobyl.. they say that after that there was radiation in the rain thousands of miles away and i dont want that near my house

Mr. T is spinning in his grave.
Might wanna fix that link. This did go well, he created fusion.
He also irradiated his house
if you're being dumb on purpose stop it's not funny.
im not dumb, clearly he cant create something that can cause as much damage as chernobyl but it is still nuclear and thats enough to cause disaster..
Isn't it fission, not fusion? Fusion combine atoms, fission is when we break atoms. Or just bad reading on my part?
Isn't it fission, not fusion? Fusion combine atoms, fission is when we break atoms. Or just bad reading on my part?
Verbatum from OP:
A 13-year-old boy from Preston has become the youngest person ever to successfully carry out atomic fusion. Jamie Edwards built a nuclear reactor before successfully smashing two hydrogen atoms together, making helium through nuclear fusion.

Verbatum from OP:
Allright, bad reading then.
Wish I had half that amount of brains.
I wasn't aware you could buy a commercial nuclear fusion kit Edit: http://instructables.com/id/Build-A-Fusion-Reactor/ Oh wow, I didn't even have to go on the Deepweb
BRB, gonna make my 12 year old brother build one. He's soooo gonna be famous.
Isn't it fission, not fusion? Fusion combine atoms, fission is when we break atoms. Or just bad reading on my part?
Fission reactors are a thing as well, and are much more difficult to build. This is what the facilities that one would traditionally think of as "nuclear power plants" use.
So kids can do it and people still doubt countries around the world like Iran still don't have nuclear technology?
So kids can do it and people still doubt countries around the world like Iran still don't have nuclear technology?
There is a bit of a difference between a kid building a fusor that ANYONE can build if they have the money and an entire country building nuclear reactors and potentially enriching uranium.
So kids can do it and people still doubt countries around the world like Iran still don't have nuclear technology?
Yes, there's quite a difference between nuclear technology and nuclear weapons.
So kids can do it and people still doubt countries around the world like Iran still don't have nuclear technology?
I don't think you realize the simplicity of this if you have money? And Iran most certainly does have nuclear technology, since this technology has been public and on the internet for a long, long time. And doing this is a little different than building a nuclear bomb, building a nuclear fusion reactor, or building a nuclear fission reactor (which isn't hard you just need to mine thorium or uranium).
im not dumb, clearly he cant create something that can cause as much damage as chernobyl but it is still nuclear and thats enough to cause disaster..
yeah the fact that a huge majority of people who rated my post thought otherwise shows that you're just ignorant. Bananas emit radiation because IIRC they preferentially uptake the radioactive isotope of potassium. Therefore bananas are nuclear. We must ban bananas before one of them melts down and causes a disaster! That is what you sound like. If you didn't want to sound dumb maybe you shouldn't include such gross grammatical errors like using two god damn periods.
If he's capable of building a makeshift fusion reactor, he's DEFINITELY a smart lad.
Now the NSA CIA FBI will watch his ass 24/7
Now the NSA CIA FBI will watch his ass 24/7
If so, it's a pity his expertise attracted the attention of cyberterrorists.

My biggest accomplishment at 13 was making cool maps in WarCraft 3.
