NYC Just Released a List of Officially Recognized Genders

I honestly do not see the issue lumping all other non-binary genders in the "other" category when it comes down to official documentation. Outside of that, stating your specific gender to others for clarification is complete fine.
My younger sib is agendered, but they probably wouldn't care if a form had 33 bubbles to choose from or only 3.
Can someone explain to me the need for gender on a governmental level anyways? Why doesnt "sex" work rather than gender, since youre basically one or the other, or extremely rarely in between.
You're ignorance is showing, might want to cover that up before someone sees it.
That's not how genders work.
That being said, a lot of this list is redundant. Like Lolkork said - a transsexual isn't going to call themselves a trans person because that kind of defeats the point.
Then please, stop making people ignorant to whatever you make up next.

I think it's mostly in the case of what to expect at face value. i.e. Feminine in appearance, identifies as female, has male genitalia. This can better help a company better understand their human elements rather than just stating they have a penis/vagina.
You think we should cover dragons just in case as well? That's the end result of your logic.
You can personally identify as a dragon if you want. The state doesn't need to ignore the scientific basis behind gender dysphoria (unlike other 'genders'!) pretend it is a legitimate gender.
There's actually a bit of a difference between identifying as another gender and a mythical creature, but what scientific basis are you referring to? I was under the impression that it's widely accepted as something with a mental & biological cause, not imaginary. The disagreement comes with how to treat it.
Very, very rare exception that should be dealt with on a case by case basis.
They're about as rare as transgender people. Generous estimates put them at 1.7% of the population, but it might be lower than that. One estimate says it's about 0.02%, but that estimate blatantly says it's only considering a very specific version of the word "intersex", ignoring cases such as those who have XXY chromosomes. So it's likely around 1%.
On the other hand, estimates for transgender people put them at 0.3% of the population - but since it's easier to hide or repress being transgender (given you're not in the middle of transitioning) than it is to hide being intersex, and transgender people have more reason to hide being transgender than intersex people have to hide being intersex, the percentage of transgender people is likely higher. I wouldn't say more than 3%, though, that would be very generous estimate given current knowledge.
So yeah, both are pretty rare. Just because transgender people are getting a lot of media attention right now doesn't mean they're not rare.
That obviously doesn't mean we shouldn't promote policies for tolerance, though. Even if both transgender and intersex people were at 0.1% of the population combined, that would still be one in a thousand people. Even with that blatantly too-low estimate, that's 300,000 people in the US. Real numbers would say a few million.
Like, we are a binary sexed species.
no we're not. officially, there are 5 sexes, male, female, and 3 different types of intersexes. transsexual might get on that list as well, but for now, it's not.
This entire gender thing seriously pisses me off somehow..
I was at a meeting some weeks ago, where all the colleagues in my country meet up and vote what the danish gymnasium organization should focus on, and in-between 400 different people from all over the country sits this special case fedora guy with a hipster beard who waves his yellow "other gender" voting sign.
It's this massive fricking meeting where we discuss what to focus on regarding over half the students in the country, and what one's gotta do is literally read some writings and occasionally stick a paper in the air. Why's the flipping fucker gotta wave his identity issues in the air everytime he wants to vote, instead of accepting who he is?
Why's it so difficult to submit to the fact that you've got chromosomes that gets your body going one way or the other.
Why do we have to internationally smile and wave at the few hipster douchebags who can't sit their high asses down to earth and stop identifying as attack helicopters and fucking snails and what not.
You've got a problem being male? SRS MTF. Got a problem with being a girl? SRS FTM. Male, female, end of story.

gender has little to do with chromosomes and isn't determined by them. i think you're mixing it up with sex, dog.

Did nobody else catch this?
I am 90% convinced this is satire.
Discounting all of the other things here (such as considering "butch" a gender, when it's an adjective describing physical and sometimes behavioral state, or the duplicity of things such as FTM/Female-To-Male and Cross-Dresser/Drag King/Drag Queen), but fucking non-binary transgender with sprinkles just screams "satire" to me.

That's probably because "Non-Binary Transgender With Sprinkles" isn't actually in the pdf.

Ah. I misread the PDF. However, all of the other duplicity still is.

Sex is not completely binary, chromosomes go a bit more complex than just XX and XY, you'd know that if you had paid attention in biology.
Also this list was either compiled by someone who has no idea what gender identity is or someone who's really angry.
That's probably because "Non-Binary Transgender With Sprinkles" isn't actually in the pdf.
What worries me more is the fact that I honestly expected that to be real. Some of the identity 'tags' that people attach to themselves are considerably more silly sounding than that.
This is effectively just giving protections to transgender people. In the same way that saying "Hey BITCH go get my my coffee, SLUT" is grounds for a discrimination lawsuit, this is saying that people who self-identify with these terms are afforded those same types of protections.
So now if a Johnny Johnson transplant out of the 40s repeatedly calls the new transgender intern "he" when she's a MTF transitioning transgender, and then goes "You're a HE, stop whining, I'm going to call you a HE and there's nothing you can do, MANLY MAN MAN" - that can be grounds for a discrimination suit.
Anyone who thinks this is a bad thing is delusional. Yes, transgender people are a very small minority - does that mean that they shouldn't be protected from discrimination under the law? That's all this is doing.
I've never heard of 'gender gifted' before.
"I am gifted"
"gifted with what?"
"Gender"
"....wha..."
"I HAVE BEEN GIFTED WITH GENDERRRRRRRRRR"
Sorry thats just how it plays out in my head.
To say that this one is an officially recognized gender in itself... I'm not so sure.
Just seems like this article was taken straight out of the depths of tumblr.
I mean I'm all for freedom of protection, If i ever saw someone making fun of a girl, calling her a bitch or slut I'd be pissed. I'd be pissed mostly because being a girl is just her physiology and being intolerant of that isn't right.
But gender gifted? hmmm...

You're right, we should be intolerant of people with gender dysphoria. Let's be intolerant of schizophrenics and those with depression as well - go right on back to the 1880s and throw them in insane asylums and rape them and beat them. Or just lobotomize them so they can conform to acceptable social identities. Because changing people by cutting out their brains and traumatizing them is much much easier and morally sound than just changing the social rules that they live by to accept them instead of exclude them.
People get so indignant at shit that does not affect them in the slightest.

Jesus fucking Christ, calm down. That's one of the ugliest strawman arguments I've ever seen from you. There are good ways to argue for the existence of non-binary genders and this is not one of them.

How the fuck is "Crossdresser" a gender?
How the fuck is "Crossdresser" a gender?
Well gender is pretty much just glorified word for personality and/or appearance.
Anything can be gender in the end, it is like art.

Nobody said anything like that lol. Way to overreact.
A gender isn't exactly a gift. By that logic, we are all mostly gender gifted...
You know what? I don't even know what to say about this. Some of the stuff in this just screams "special snowflake", but I don't really want to comment on it.
Let's just say some stuff just sounds ludicrous.
"genders" more like mentally deranged people

I use gender for living things that can be categorized by their genitalia. And I think most people do so by that way.
So, anything being able to be gender is... wrong?
This is so weird.

Um... Isak? Not only am I convinced that the source lied, but as someone who considers himself a transgender rights ally, I'm still confused about the... legitimacy of some of these designations?
Don't get me wrong, I get that people can feel they were born in the wrong body, and want to transition to another physical sex or social gender. So we've got MTF and FTM transgender individuals. Then you've got some who were born as hermaphrodites and may or may not suffer gender dysphoria, all that. The Two-spirit thing? Sure, if it's got cultural precedent, it's got cultural precedent for native Americans. I won't pretend to know better. As for those who are transgendered but don't want to undergo an operation, it's not hard to see why even someone with gender dysphoria might not feel right going under the knife. So okay, let's say Non-op is legit too (Because I personally feel that could easily fall under some of the other categories).
In what world does "Drag king" or "Drag queen" or even "Agender" deserve the same consideration? And what in hell does "gender-gifted" or "gender bender" mean? Are any of these things things that can't be classified under an umbrella term without risking offense to said individuals? Is "agender" even an actual case of gender dysphoria? Because I'm not quite sure how that works.
Maybe I'm ignorant, but this list seems to go far beyond the reasonable and into the territory of pure satire.
I don't see the point of this shit.
There is no point to it.
I'm 100% for trans rights and acceptance but this isn't even remotely on the right path. This is stupid.

Thank you for explaining!
That's literally the only classification beyond male and female that we need. The vast majority of people who identify as their birth gender see no difference between most of these tumblr genders.
I consider "other" less condescending than agender.
Arent most of those just a state your gender is in, not an actual gender. Like if you're trans, thats a state, your transitioning from one gender to another, not making up a new gender.
Fuck i hate posting in these topics, it always feels like you're carefully avoiding a room with its floor full of mousetraps.
okay what the fuck is a "two-spirit"
that sounds like something a racist stereotype cliche Tanto-like character would say
