Shark Week bites: Discovery criticized for hugely misleading documentary

this video is such giant bullshit rofl
Honestly I'm still terrified of sharks (I used to be scared of swimming in the deep end of the pool when I was a kid because of Jaws) but it's more of a fearful respect for them.
I read that as "I used to be scared of swimming in the deep end of the pool when I was a kid because of Jews"
something is wrong with me
Facts also state that there are three types of sharks that will openly attack and devour humans. Bulls, Tigers, and Great Whites.
Granted, these attacks are primarily accidental, but they hardly stop attacking after they taste you like normal sharks.
According to the International Shark Attack File there's only been:
74 confirmed fatal unprovoked Great White attacks (198 non-fatal)
29 confirmed fatal unprovoked Tiger Shark attacks (71 non-fatal)
26 confirmed fatal unprovoked Bull Shark attacks (66 non-fatal)
since 1580
http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/sharks/statistics/species3.htm
However, determining the species of an attack is extremely hard, and eye-witnesses will usually say it's one of those three because those are famous in pop-culture. You're not going to see a weekend beach-goer saying "Oh it was a Bronze Whaler for sure!" You're much more likely to get something like "It was a fuckin' Great White like Jaws, man!"
[editline]6th August 2013[/editline]
So, If those three undoubtedly aggressive sharks did not mind the taste of human, then surely they would've established beaches as a feeding ground like they have with Seals on Seal Island. They would be picking people off on an hourly basis like Crocodiles waiting for herds of migrating Buffalo to cross the river in the Serengeti. Especially since beaches worldwide have basically looked like this since the early 1900's:

Look at all those delicious land-mammals basking in the sun like chicken legs under a heat lap at an all you can eat buffet!
The truth is, sharks don't like to eat human, and in most cases they let go after realizing that's what they bit. You're far more likely to win the megamillions than you are to get bitten or killed by a shark.
Documentaries about urban legends, conspiracies, etc definitely have a place on educational television networks but not if they're being presented as truth. Present the legends, examine the culture around them, but don't legitimize it unless the evidence is damn good.
Well, there went the last vague shred of actual science on Discovery.
I LOVE mock documentaries like these. I watched both the mermaid ones and Megalodon ones. It was obvious certain bits were staged and fake, but I love how convincing they tried to make them.
I think it's all in good fun. The megalodon documentary had disclaimers too. I think it's kinda silly to join the "Discovery aired a fake documentary and I blindly believed it, thus they're disrespecting me" debate. The mermaids one didn't have this same backlash and it was even more outlandish.
I wish they made more shows like this.
I like some of the docu-drama stuff like Deadliest Catch and Gold Rush but Discovery produce so much shite these days it's unreal.

I do believe there was a dragon one too. That one was fucking fantastic it was all bullshit but brilliantly made

Do you know what it was called? I want to watch it now.

Except the Mermaids one said it was fictionalized, and yet people still believed it. Megalodons only said it was Dramatized. Whether or not people believed it is their fault for falling for it, but the producers didn't even say it was fake. There's zero attempt to say it was a fiction, and the poll asking if people believe the Megalodon still exists because of the fake evidence they produced shows this. They want people to believe falsehoods. Undoing what shark scientists have been trying to do for decades, promote the truth. I like mockumentaries too, but there's no place for one in a week that people actually take as truthful shark facts. The mermaid one also had quite a large backlash from scientists as well.
Michael Sorensen, the executive producer of Shark Week, defended the decision to include the film in this year’s programming.
“With a whole week of Shark Week programming ahead of us, we wanted to explore the possibilities of Megalodon,” Michael Sorensen, executive producer of Shark Week, told FOX411 in a statement. “It’s one of the most debated shark discussions of all time, can Megalodon exist today? It’s Ultimate Shark Week fantasy. The stories have been out there for years and with 95% of the ocean unexplored, who really knows?”

If the show started with a sentence saying "Megalodon went extinct millions of years ago and literally zero scientists say they still exist, and this show is a complete work of fiction" then it would've been good fun. But it didn't. They want their views to think there's a possibility that there's a giant shark that can eat boats swimming out there. Which there isn't.
It's debated in cryptozoology, not science.

moonshiners is the worst offender
literally all of it is staged but they're making it out to be a ~super illegal documentary~
Do you know what it was called? I want to watch it now.
I think these are both the same thing, but they're edited/narrated differently for some reason.
My dad was watching this to him. I had to explain how the Megalodon couldn't be alive today for about 10-15 minutes.
What the fuck happened to Discovery Channel? It used to be science and cool shit. Now it's reality shows about people smuggling moonshine and other stupid shit 24/7.
I don't understand Duck Dinasty.
I miss the times I could spend an entire day watching WW2 documentaries on History
I fucking loved those documentaries man.
I loved those documentaries too but they seemed to be the only type of documentaries the History Channel ever played. After seeing World War II in Colour for the umpteenth time I eventually just stopped watching and started looking for my documentaries online.
I remember stumbling across that show when it aired on Discovery channel.
And I thought the improv amateur comedian was hilariously bad.
I don't understand Duck Dinasty.
I love Duck Dynasty.
Canadian Discovery Channel is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than the American Discovery Channel. Like there is actually educational stuff on nearly all the time.
Never stop producing atrociously bad television America, it's surprisingly good to watch hungover.
Guess what else is going to be part of Shark Week, at least in Canada
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharknado
That's right, a shitty movie about a tornado that spits out sharks. RIP Discovery Channel.

*blank quote*
Are you telling me that a shark spitting tornado doesn't actually exist.
Discovery started sucking years ago when (at the time) it became all about building motorcycles and yelling at each other instead of cool science stuff.

How'd you manage to travel back in time? Take me with you next time!
On a serious note, I'd say that's quite untrue. Our Discovery Channel does get some educational content (not sure how much more compared to the U.S.) but it's definitely not anywhere near all the time. Maybe you're thinking of one of Discovery Channel's variations like Discovery World?
i liked watching shows like ww2 documentaries and future weapons, but now you have to get the military channel and it's not available in my area :(
I miss being up at night and being able to put on the Discovery Channel and learn something.
Now all I can watch are shows about people mining for gold while being pilots on ice then auctioning it off to fishermen in exchange for their catches. :(

And there's no constant yelling and fighting and smashing of shit.
And Fast and Loud is actually pretty good too. You get to see a lot of interesting vehicles on the show, and some of the work they do is actually pretty impressive. It also doesn't really involve any fights and such, the most is an occasional disagreement between the Richard who runs the business and the main mechanic Aaron, but these are hardly anything, or the fights between Richard and Sue which are mostly just silly fights. Its a pretty light-hearted show really. Doesn't exactly fit on Discovery, but it's better than American Chopper Season 17 NOW WITH EVEN MORE SCREAMING AND BREAKING SHIT AND ACTING LIKE RETARDS ON NATIONAL TELEVISION!.
It's all just reality shows nowadays, like that ridiculous Amish mafia show.

I agree that Auction Kings is actually good since I can watch it and learn about cool things that don't appear to be staged, so it's not like all of their programming is bad.
But then you have that show whose name I can't remember that follows around two rival biker gangs and watches as they go through typing biker gang things like disagreeing with fellow members while remaining civil. I hate the shitty staged 'reality' shows so much.
I agree that Auction Kinds is actually good since I can watch it and learn about cool things that don't appear to be staged, so it's not like all of their programming is bad.

If its ever on and I can't be bothered to change to something else, I just spend the whole time making fun of it. And now that have that one about the street racers in OKC. Hell, in one episode they had a guy outright admit that apparently he was forging some documents for a thing he was having to turn in to a court or something. Because that is what smart people do, admit to forgery on national television.
That's another thing about Fast and Loud, they fake stuff but they're also open when they're doing it that its just for TV at that point. There was one episode where they were test driving a car and Richard did donuts around a police officer and such and then sped off, and after the scene Richard came on and said flatly that it was just a joke and that it was staged for laughs and everything.
For a second I thought it would be over this commercial

this is why watching discovery channel is epic with some class a marijuana
