Yay! But also real work. (AKA pretending to not be on facepunch)
wha you show up in?
here in Germany you show up in the car of the driving school
It's personal vehicles here. I can take my test in a smartcar or an F350.
They'll be banned, wouldn't want to go to jail for public endangerment by driving a car yourself would you?
How about no, I shouldn't be forced into driving some shitty self-driving electric boringmobile. Would much rather drive what I want to instead of what the government wants me to.
Can we not get into an automated car shitshow?
Can we not get into an automated car shitshow?
Believe me, I have nothing wrong with automated vehicles. What I do have an issue with is someone telling me what I can and can't drive, and being able to drive in the first place. At least leave the option there for people who prefer to drive the car themselves instead of outlawing it altogether.

Yes but that opens up a whole can of worms every time that is not relevant to this thread.

I haven't even seen any real indication that non-self-driving cars are going to be banned. It just looks to me that you're coming up with your own theory and getting paranoid at it.

I suppose you're right, but self-driving automobiles are still in their infancy so to speak so who knows what might happen down the road. Anyway, I didn't intend to derail so get back on topic I think it's a little silly for BMW to phase out manuals, though it's nice they're at least giving enthusiasts who prefer driving stick some recognition.
They'll be banned, wouldn't want to go to jail for public endangerment by driving a car yourself would you?
I don't care that they'll be banned, I'm going to keep driving myself. I get carsick when I'm not the one in control of the vehicle.
why are people such arrogant assholes when it comes to driving a manual, christ it's worse than how apple users were around 2006.
nobody gives a shit that you have fun driving a manual, just go drive it and quit talking about it already
Manuals are just more fun to drive, simple as. There's an entire interaction with the car you don't get with an automatic.
That's subjective. I mean, I drive an auto and I would hate to see manuals go because hey.. some people like that. but saying "driving manual is more fun" is like saying "PC'S ARE SUPERIOR!"
I love how they're calling manuals a 'niche' market. Europe and America really are two different worlds.
I love how they're calling manuals a 'niche' market. Europe and America really are two different worlds.
I thought the exact same thing. I literally only ever met one guy who owns an automatic and he migrated here from the USA.
Seriously everyone drives a manual here, it's not niche it's the norm.
The reason I learned manual was because I wanted to have more tools at my disposal in case of emergency, which is one of the main reasons I took the driving lessons.
I have a few friends who do drive manuals and when I go to Europe, I know I'll pick up a manual as they are cheaper to rent then automatics.
Plus, I do remember being a lot more concentrated on my driving when stick shifting was involved.
If there's anything this and the last auto/manual-related thread have taught me, it's that manual drivers join the same joke as crossfitters, vegans and atheists.
I love how they're calling manuals a 'niche' market. Europe and America really are two different worlds.
I've never been to Europe so I can't comment on car culture there, but I can tell you how it works here in the Los Angeles area.
Most people see the car as a tool, get me from here to there. These people do not have 'fun' driving. Driving is a requirement in order to get where you're going, public transportation is horrible here. These people want the least amount of work asked of them while driving. Rowing your own gears is needless effort to them.
A sub group of drivers are into modifying their cars. These are car enthusiasts, the appearance of their car is their priority. These types of drivers may or may not care about how gears get shifted.
Finally, the smallest group, the drivers. These people enjoy driving itself. These are the people who'll cruise around just for the sake of cruising. These are also the racers. This is really the group that's likeliest to have a manual transmission.
Lots of people share their car with family members, these people get automatics because it's what everyone can drive. Most people also get a couple of upgrades any time they are shopping for a car, such as air conditioning. Going with an automatic is one of those 'must have' upgrades so the lower cost of a manual is not a factor. Going with a manual to save money makes no sense unless you're buying a completely stripped down model, and no one does that by choice. If that's all you can afford, sure you do it, but no one WANTS to do that.

There's one more group you missed: the hoons. people who will take any car no matter how inappropriate and do donuts in the winn dixie parking lot or bomb fire roads in a miata with a muffler delete. There's a lot of overlap between hoons and drivers or hoons and modifiers, but I feel like it's a distinct group

Same to everyone who treats cars as "just a tool to get from point A to point B"
Same to everyone who treats cars as "just a tool to get from point A to point B"
Knock off the persecution complex guy. I see a lot less vitriol from the people who use a car as a tool (which they are for all intents and purposes, a object created to do a task better than we do, a tool) than I see from manual enthusiasts who insist that anybody not driving a manual should just go jump off a cliff or w/e. The people who use their car just to get from A to B couldn't give two shits what transmission is in the fucking thing as long as it works and they can use it. "enthusiasts" care what transmission people who aren't themselves are using and (going by the last two threads we've had on this topic alone) genuinely think you're wasting your time with an automatic, despite it still doing the job of getting someone from A to B perfectly fine.
Fuck I cannot wait for the day we develop teleportation and outright ban cars as a response, I won't have to hear this shit every time cars come up on the Internet.
Same to everyone who treats cars as "just a tool to get from point A to point B"
But those people aren't arrogant. They use their car for its intended purpose and don't make a fuzz about it.
But those people aren't arrogant. They use their car for its intended purpose and don't make a fuzz about it.
I think it's fairly obvious that there's shitheads in both camps, to be honest.
[editline]7th July 2015[/editline]
I'm not denying that there's a lot of elitism from "enthusiasts" in any thread regarding transmissions. The last thread had a lot of people cheering the "phasing out" of manual transmissions.

...And fuck computer building "enthusiasts" and their goshdarn overclocking multipliers and messing about with their BIOS. I can't wait until we phase making our own choices out so no one can enjoy anything I don't like.
Does anyone really care what transmission someone else has? Did someone honestly tell someone to go jump off a cliff for driving an automatic? If you don't care for car culture, then don't get so upset over it. Do you.
yeah I don't care how much money I throw out the window on the way to work guys! it's ok because I'm getting more "smiles per gallon" than you automatic-driving plebeians!
piss off dude. a car is a utility to most people.
No, you piss off. What the hell are you on about, mate?

Computer enthusiasts don't tend to complain about PCs being available for things like office work or web browsing constantly like so many of you in here have been about automatics. Yeah some of them are pretty "holier-than-thou", but I don't see them calling people "pussies" for not using liquid helium coolant whilst they tweak that presentation for tomorrow.
In this thread and the last thread there are plenty of people complaining that people who don't drive manual aren't using cars "right". People driving automatics or those entirely indifferent however are just like "eh whatevs, the fucking thing works doesn't it?".
Yeah stop having fun guys
See? This is the exact shit I'm talking about. Notice how the post you're replying to isn't saying "stop having fun", it's saying "nobody actually gives a fuck, bragging isn't making anyone jealous so stop posting that dumb shit".
We don't care that automatics are available. We care that people support the phasing out of manuals, ie this thread, this article.
driving a manual is like custom building a rig
yeah dont get me wrong sure its fun and yeah in the past it was simply the better way of doing it, but now there's really nothing wrong with buing a prebuilt/driving an automatic, and honestly its an increasingly more efficent way of doing things
We don't care that automatics are available. We care that people support the phasing out of manuals, ie this thread, this article.
One company are phasing manuals out for a certain series of cars because the demographic for purchases of that series rarely if ever buy manual cars. That is a completely logical business decision and I'm sure if you have the cash or contacts you can request a manual transmission be fitted at the factory, or just find a manual version of the car (or just buy any other car that's manual and fits your tastes? it's not that small a market).
Manual transmissions aren't being rounded up and shot behind the shed, cars are still going to have them and if worst comes to the worst there's always the import market if you want something really damn specific and the laws/ regulations of your state aren't silly.

"Ew, you bought a Mac just for shitting about on the internet and playing movies and video games? I could have built you a perfectly fine windows rig with I7K, GTX970 and an overclock and yada yada for the same price..."
"Console fag", "PC master race", "Keyboard&Mouse>Controllers", "Android>iPhone"
Do these ring any bells?
Fanboys are fanboys. They don't represent the entirety of their culture though, do they?
I think you're blowing it out of proportion.
if you're honestly enough of a gearhead to bitch that hard about it, just do a fucking transmission swap jeez

You're right, it's sort of a 'drive it into the ground' group. They are a distinct group. Any car will get used by them like a rented mule.

In Florida, you have to provide your own vehicle. I didn't need to do a driving test at the DMV (took driver's education in school using school cars), but if had to I would have just used my father's SUV.
