The Fate of the Internet -- Decided in a Back Room

I don't know what to think of this.
On one hand the FCC wants all traffic to be treated as the same(including P2P) and on the other The ISP's don't need regulation.
Sounding like a Microsoft solution to get money from computergamers.
Like a computer version of "Live".
What would stop people getting it all for free? People can use a black box to get paid tv channels, why not internet?
It would (in theory) be rather simple to evade anything like this, as the sites you aren't paying for (or what ever the case may be) would just be being blocked. And Tor is a proven way to get around filters (Although they would frown upon it being used for this, because it doesn't have the capacity) so people could just use Tor.
Isn't the internet just P2P except there's a middle-man to go through?
Change the middle-man, simple. Start an ISP with the safe and non-corrupt assholes who want to charge for everything! Sure, it would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, but what's better?

Live (and similar products) are fine because its on a closed network, and you are paying to use Microsoft's resources.
With the internet, you are paying a company to connect your machine to the internet. Once it gets onto the internet it has nothing to do with your ISP, they should not be able to slow your internet because you are doing something that they want to charge more for.

If ISPs are not capable of being self regulating (IE Not touching internet traffic) then they need to be regulated.

ISPs are forced to obey the government.
Fuck the Government! Make your own island off in the middle of nowhere, plop an ISP on it and call it home! :P
I swear, second tiered internet comes into play, I'm continuing the internet with a gigantic LAN.
i don't know what to say.... let's hope the internet doesn't fall through the floor and that everyone sees sense.
This won't be allowed in Denmark. We're the 51st state of america... that is to say, we scrapped all the focus on capitalism and patriotism for ultimate focus on freedom. this will not be allowed in Denmark, hell nowhere in Scandinavia.
Capitalism and "build your own fortune" just isn't a tagline here.

How does that equal to the 51st state of America??
If they fuck over net neutrality, nothing will happen. Not a damn thing, why? Because very few will stand up and fight.
Comcast and AT&T have the money. The public doesn't. Therefore, in our plutocracy system, Comcast/AT&T get their way.
Net neutrality will not be broken.
The moment that the major ISP providers restrict internet access in any way whatsoever, new ISP providers will emerge and make huge profits.
That's really all that might happen. The internet itself, due to its nature, cannot be restricted.

It's not that easy. First, they need the company and employees, then they need to invest money into the development of their infrastructure. Since AT&T or Comcast won't let anyone use their consumer tier backbones. New ISP's won't just spring overnight, and could be years till such would develop.
I shall miss the internet greatly.

Certainly, but its not like existing ISP's have no competition.
The minute a ISP starts using some strange sattlelight tv like payment system (which I think is absurd and will never happen) Their largest competitor will advertise up the wazzo their normal internet service.
They could conspire but why would they, the only person who has something to gain is the one who's afraid that their competitor will charge lower prices and take away their business.
If this goes through, and my father has not retired yet, I'm holding him partly responsible. (he works for AT&T)
on the bright side, google is there. Google isn't going to let anything happen to the internet, they profit off the whole thing.

he probably doesn't know or particularly care what's happening with this, if you blame him you suddenly become the douche bag
Now that I think about it, What dad does wouldn't be connected anyway.
Yay, Fascism.

Me + rpg + every major corporation involved.
I can imagine myself wearing some sort of facepunch t-shirt as i do this.
One word. Darknet.
We have not yet reached a consensus.
When are those wireless towers finishing development? They are supposed to be able replace landlines which will make being an ISP much easier.
If this goes ahead I'm going to organize FPers to lay fiber cable all over the US for cheap bandwidth. We'll call it the outernet, and I'll make a thread about it in hardware and software.
Here i made a visual.

why
nothing is going to happen and if it does you can easily just stick with your more local ISPs like Cablevision in the New York area. people aren't idiots, they won't switch to an isp that provides 1/1000000 of whats available just because of the price
why
