I like to think this is a fairly reasonable thing to do.

1. Skip day one purchase.
2. Check everyday for a week for widespread Hardware or Software errors.
3. If there's nothing, go and buy. If theres reports, save your money and wait for an hardware revision and repeat 2 and 3.

But many people go, "OHMIGAWD NEW IPHONE MUST HAVE" and leave it at that and then go get it. That's why it's the market leader, and that's why it's an avowedly attacked phone and brand. I know of only people that do this with apple too it seems.

One of my best friends is a self proclaimed macfag, and he owns at least 3 different macbooks and has 3 versions of the iPhone(he's also rich) and each time a new apple product rolls out, without much reading about it, he'll buy it. He's not the only person I know like this.

The Ipod was just luck, it wasn't the best or the first MP3 player, and apple got lucky and managed to cash in at the right time. Apple was the "underdog" under Microsoft at the time, and they made slick-looking stuff so obviously any product that is mildly useful and has an i in front of the name becomes an instant fad.
