I like to think of America as a salad mixing bowl, though. The traditional view is a melting pot, where everyone from every race/culture comes together and becomes American, I think it's better than people retain their cultures and what makes them who they are. Like a salad bowl, we all mix together but still retain our own unique identity and flavor. Note that I believe this 100% because of Korean food and very little else.

Not trying to be pessimistic, but the idea of a salad being a national identity is a pretty scary thought cause it could mean that their would be a greater divide between different groups within a country.

I think that these groups can coexist despite their difference. Imagine if everyone who moved to the US gave up their culture and all we ate was sandwiches and whatever our parents ate. The city nearby where I live (Annandale) has a huge Korean-speaking population and I get to learn new languages, meet new people, try new food, etc. rather than having everything watered down to the lowest common denominator.

People should pursue who they like, regardless of race, but your objective should be neither to date within or outside your race, but to find someone you like. Unrelated to the drama(mostly, anyway), interracial couples' children tend to be significantly healthier, more beautiful (in how the brain determines beauty, eg symmetry, etc) and whatnot because its the merging of two long-separated genepools allowing for much greater genetic diversity. They also, apparently contrary to popular(one person) belief, tend to have greater intelligence for the same reason, if given the same opportunities as a non interracial child. Old Navy can do better with diversity and equality in the advertisements. Interracial ad is so common place today. Want to make it more outrageous? Make it two gay men hugging and kissing each other in the advert. Want to max outrage out? Have a special clothing line for muslim women featuring hijab and burka as a fashion clothes for sale.
