I don't think we should encourage people to be further withdrawn from reality/direct social contact
Holding a smartphone while walking on the way to somewhere isn't being disconnected from reality. Wearing an Oculus Rift with headphones on while walking is being disconnected from reality. Phones aren't magical shields from the outside world. I sometimes wish they were, but they're not. I remember reading a webcomic that compared getting likes on Facebook to shooting up heroin.
ohgod its the walking dead, no wait just a sidewalk full of smartphone zombies [editline]15th September 2014[/editline] i wonder if there's a police guy sitting there to yell at people who use a smartphone in the other sidewalk "but i was just checking the time" "no you get over there in that sidewalk!"
"This is fascism!" They should call these pathways "walkie-talkies".
It's more fun to push people out of the way and give them a dirty look than give them their own lane.
For added cruelty potential, the texting lane should also be the one with the missing bricks, gutters, and manholes.
I was expecting sidewalks that were smartphones.
