Flickr relaunched, has new design and a whole 1TB of storage space.

Take JPEG, put files inside JPEG, upload JPEG full of shit.
Win...?
If they accept video files too (or I can just mass rename them into jpg), it would be a very nice thing for back up.
If you shoot in nothing but raw format images, in stupidly high resolution you can do it.
All my computer files could fit on a 1Tb HDD.
No way in hell someone uploading photos can touch 1Tb
My archive from 2011-2012 is well over 500 gig and I didn't actually shoot much for the second half of '12
however it also consists of the RAW data files, not just the final JPGs that I'd post in a gallery (noting the post above me). You don't host RAW files as images, they're pure data that has to be translated by photoshop/lightroom or other programs designed for it. RAW exists only to give the most pure original data (aka no compression and it has far more dynamic range), to benefit the editing process.
I'd only imagine this will be useful to people who do a shitton of weddings or other large events and just need the hosting space to link the collections
either way I'm taking advantage of it the previous free limit was fuck-all and deleted a ton of my pictures when my pro account expired
what yahoo really needs to do is change their name. yahoo. christ. what were they thinking. yahoo!
It'd be funny if someone saved 1TB of golden shower porn in the cloud.
It'd be funny if someone saved 1TB of golden shower porn in the cloud.
That would be really taking the piss, wouldn't it?
Probably because they know only a very small percentage will actually upload 1TB worth of images.
That's what they think...I will go upload all of the porn I will ever need to save for future purposes.
Maybe they'll incorporate flickr as tumblr's image/file host?
they'll blow over 1TB in a day
the internet archive opens thousands of flickr accounts to store all their images
IIRC Internet Archive is "Sponsored" by Amazon, so they probably get free (or really discounted) storage for their stuff, and Amazon S3 can store an extreme amount of data (Hint: All of Netflixs' videos, Apple Icloud, Dropbox, Garrysmod.org, etc. Are hosted on Amazon S3)

Do you have any idea how large full-resolution DSLR shots are? I ended up with something like 3gb of photos last week from shots at a single event, and that's not even on a full-frame camera.
Or does Flickr scale down high-res shots to more manageable sizes?
Or does Flickr scale down high-res shots to more manageable sizes?
No, it keeps the full-res version available.

A professional photographer wouldn't have a problem going through 1TB of storage.
Even a hobby photographer could blow through it quite easily.

Actually they host all their stuff on their own cluster of computers, the last time I checked they had around ten petabytes of space in total.

I wonder if they'll encorparate the sites together
it still has the 300mb/month limit, have fun filling up 1tb in 300 years
they are probably running block level deduplication, throw that together with one of these

and you can offer as much storage as you want for pictures
I only skim read this article so sorry if its mentioned, but are they still limiting the number of photos you can actually see on a free accounts gallery? I seem to recall it was limited to a set number of pages and once you hit that it started hiding your photos from the public to fit new ones in.
What was the one image that was super huge?
So in "cloud"-terms, what would happen if the clouds started raining.
If you have some current DSLRs that are around $1000, the JPEGs are around 5MB and the RAW files are around 25MB.
I'm happy they got rid of the "from Yahoo!!!!!!!" by the logo.

blue screen of death
(memory leak)
How can I upload data as images, then download those images and turn them back into data? THAT would be cool. It would literally mean a free 1tb server for all your files
So wait
I can store around 200,000 pictures
But my camera shutter is only guaranteed to last for 100,000!
Gee thanks yahoo
I have a 455GB HDD and I've barely used 200GB in the last 4 years of having it. A Terrabyte is just over kill

Nah, I end up uploading about 36 Gigabytes a month in photos (well, mostly photos); and that's just from my dev and screenshot stuff (mostly); I'd imagine somebody who was a real hobby / professional Photographer could probably use just as much if not more.

Just checked, yup; you're right, 10 Petabytes as of december 2012.
That's great and all but the new design is a fucking eyesore, it looks like something from the 90s.

No it doesn't :v:
I probably have 30 gigs of pictures.
