A viking isn't necessarily a pirate, and yes, it's true that early raiders took advantage of the poor defenses the English towns had. There were also viking warriors. Viking armies defeated several English armies and established a permanent foothold in England which led to the Danelaw in 884. This lasted until 1042, where the English got the throne back (because the Danish king died without an heir), only to be invaded again in 1066 by the Normans (descendants of the vikings that invaded France).
