Hundreds of times bigger still isn't shit compared to this.
the B53 weighed 10,000 pounds and was the size of a minivan.
I now have the mental image of a bomber dropping a explosive Volkswagen Type 2 (Hippie bus) on Russia.
what if they dont dismantle it properly?
Honesty it's small compared to the power.
Well, things get smaller but bigger as time passes don't they?
I really don't see there ever being a viable reason to use a bomb of that magnitude. Honestly. The social and ecological repercussions alone are enough to make me not want to use that.
Only possible reason woulda been strapping it to a rocket and destroying an asteroid, and even THEN that's a maybe.
what if they dont dismantle it properly?
gonna be one hell of a show.
what if they dont dismantle it properly?
Nothing probably, nukes aren't things that explode at the simplest touch. They have multiple failsafes put in place to prevent accidents.
Why would you need a nuke this big?
That's how far the deterrence theory goes.
But one day they will be our end.
Nuclear weapons can keep world peace too, look at the cold war, so i doubt we'll ever get rid of them all, because it's simply safer that way.
This is what should happen to all nuclear bombs.
Nuclear weapons have brought about a sense of peace among developed nations
[editline]26th October 2011[/editline]
Why would you need a nuke this big?
Compared to some of the nukes developed during the cold war, they're not that big.
Why would you need a nuke this big?
Probably to defend against an alien invasion I would say.
what if they dont dismantle it properly?
Then I better say goodbye to the girl I love! :) :(
man, looks like back in the day the US had a last-resort nuclear weapon at their disposal for most wars. Just thinking about what would happen if Russia didn't give up like Japan did really gives me some messed up thoughts
Nothing probably, nukes aren't things that explode at the simplest touch. They have multiple failsafes put in place to prevent accidents.
This. Nuclear weapons are so fucking complicated, that the only way to accidentally set one off is to detonate another nuke right next to it and even then, you'd still probably end up with a crater that is slightly more radioactive
what if they dont dismantle it properly?
Nukes have many, many, MANY, failsafes, and it cannot really be set off without the proper detonation. I am pretty sure you could blow these things up (with a smaller amount of explosive, and not have anything happen besides spreading radioactive material, like a dirty bomb, everywhere.
These things should have never existed in the first place.
People who think we should disarm our nuclear arsenal don't understand the concepts of nuclear deterrence and MAD.
Nuclear proliferation and it's political ramifications can be seen as the only reason for such a long standing relative peace between developed nations.
That can't be the last of them. With countries knowing we don't have them, they could go batshit on us for no reason.
It's a gravity bomb, it's nearly obsolete by anyone's standards.
That's a big ass bomb
9 Megatons apparantley.
And if you think thats big, the of the Tsar Bomb which was 5 times more powerful than that.
And they had to scale it down a couple of notches to reduce fallout.
And they had to scale it down a couple of notches to reduce fallout.
I think they scaled it down around fifty megatons.
But what do we do when we need to fend off an alien menace? How are we going to nuke space itself??
But what do we do when we need to fend off an alien menace? How are we going to nuke space itself??
With self propelled weapons, not a gravity bomb (this).
Thank god we have biological weapons nowadays, that way the goods, resources and the money stay safe.
The destruction is familiar to many people, and allows one to scale up the level of human loss. It's frankly the only thing we have to compare it to.
If you ask me, we ought to start measuring high-yield nuclear explosives in units of "How Many Bricks Would Captain Planet Shit If He Saw This Thing", in which case I'm pretty sure this thing would be at least a medium-sized schoolhouse.
I think they scaled it down around fifty megatons.
Seeing as the resultant blast broke windows all the way in Norway and Finland, I think it was a good idea. Oh, and this is what the bomb would do for damage if dropped on Paris:

This picture absolutely blows my mind. Is it accurate?
am I the only one that wants to see a nuke this size flung into an asteroid or something
This is a small nuke compared to whats possible.
Its simply we don't want to waste the uranium on a useless nuke that would destroy TOO much stuff.
High efficiency tactical nukes are much better.
Nothing probably, nukes aren't things that explode at the simplest touch. They have multiple failsafes put in place to prevent accidents.
Apparently the high explosives can still go off though.
Why are these WMDs given such sissy names? Fat Man? Tsar bomba?
If I wanted to induce utter fear and terror in the hearts of my enemies, I'd name my nukes Rectum Rippers or something...
