When you get a Cease & Desist letter, you're not far off from a lawsuit. You comply instantly or you get sued for a shitload of money.
It's still not a lawsuit. They haven't been sued.
I don't know why you're all supporting the game, they are using someone else's IP, they can tell them to stop whenever they want. The creators will just end up recolouring the ponies. You'll still be able to play your little game.
THEY SPENT 2 YEARS WORKING ON IT OMG!!
The outcry against it is stupid and incredibly senseless. So many people want Hasbro literally dead over a fucking game. I'm pretty sure the show's creator actually asked the team if they wanted her to make new characters they could use for the game.
Probably something along the lines of Hasbro doesn't support the idea of fighting when the show is the complete opposite of fighting.
They think the image the FANMADE game would give their merch would be bad?
But on face value it is pretty ironic; making a fighting game of a show promoting being friends.
Bronies or not, I always hate it when fan games get cease and desists
Well if it's a fan game that's actually trying to profit and make money, then even the most leniant companies will do it
move along hasbro. remove the whole fandom and you will get my respect
They would be stupid to try and do that. Bronies are a major source of money for Hasbro in regards to MLP FiM merchandise and whatnot.
They would be stupid to try and do that. Bronies are a major source of money for Hasbro in regards to MLP FiM merchandise and whatnot.
However, not their target demographic. Loss of 15-20 year old male fans would be a slap on the wrist for their profits.

Indeed. Hasbro may or may not like it, but Bronies are their major income. No Bronies = no sales. And honestly, Hasbro catered to Bronies a lot so that's not going to happen anytime soon.
I can't say I approve of this game, but it's always depressing with a non-profit project gets shut down by C&D letters. Did they ever receive official permission from Hasbro to make the game, before?
Their website says the game is non-profit. Would that competition have money prizes? I don't really think that would cause it, since the game itself would not be used for financial gain by the developers.
Most likely Hasbro didn't want MLP to be associated with a competitive fighting game.
That, or Hasbro plans on making MLP tie-in games. Microsoft C&D'd a Halo RTS mod for Command & Conquer, then like a week later announced Halo Wars.
If it gets ONE guy to buy a single drink at the tournament, it's commercial gains.

I don't know, this seemed pretty professional and it could cause controversy.
The problem isn't that there's a free game about ponies, hasbro would probably like that
The problem is that it's a game about ponies that puts them in a violent situation that goes against what the creators want for the show. It's like taking a show like "care bears" and making them fight to the death. They want games about to show to reflect the show, not be about fighting.
Basically they just don't want their characters becoming famous for being in a game about fighting, because (surprise surprise) the show is meant for little girls to be educated about the importance of friendship or some shit, not for "bronies" who like fighting games. They don't want the intended audience going online looking for a MLP game and playing fighting is magic. Some parents would complain and Hasbro would end up in deep shit because no one could realise it was a fan work. Besides, it's not they they made the game or anything, it is a "fighting game creator 200x" project that has taken up immense popularity. And no shit they are going to get sued for taking art directly from the show and plastering onto a fighting game they call their own. Even if it's free.
Copyright control is a mixed blessing.
As mentioned it can constrain what franchise fans can and cannot do but at the same time it also allows the copyright holder to set fire to the genetics lab that is churning out a super creepy pony game for grown men in their 30's.
I think this is more "grow the fuck up guys" style intervention than anything considering how much fan made pony merch has already been sold.
It's still a shit move, regardless of what you may think.
I wouldn't care if someone made a fan game using my own intellectual property as long as no money would be made on it but it seems like Many 6 was on its way to charge for the game and no one enjoys seeing someone making money on your own property.
However, not their target demographic. Loss of 15-20 year old male fans would be a slap on the wrist for their profits.
Their target demographic is actually entire families. However, bronies are, surprisingly, a huge potential pool of money. Bronies already buy so much of the merchandise, way more than a small child can, or more than their parents are willing to get their kids. They have recognized this, and started to cater a little bit to the fandom with stuff in the show. Hasbro is not stupid, they realize that they have something here so they will never push us away completely.

MIPS, Richard Stallman and the crew at 4chan are creating a new version of it which will be under the GNU license and be shared software
It's great, though, to see fans of something go so far to make polished things like these just because they like the source material so much.
Speaking of Source, such an example is Black Mesa.
THE TEAM ON 4CHAN IS RISING HOLY SHIT
MORE SPRITES AND ITS GONNA BE ON DREAMCAST
Well if it's a fan game that's actually trying to profit and make money, then even the most leniant companies will do it
As far as I know, it was non-profit.
I'm not a MLP fan, but...
Goddamn you, capitalism, they are sueing even their mother's vagina those days.
Man, these guys have the WORST luck with their fan games. It probably won't be too long before the fan merch starts getting slammed too.
[sp]which isn't necessarily a bad thing for some of it[/sp]
Well that was gonna happen eventually.

Not saying you're wrong here, but reading this is depressing.

They aren't getting sued. At least not at this point.
There's sensationalism and then there's blatantly false titling
anyway, people have to defend copyrights or they lose them, blah blah blah
What the fuck are you doing?
the new version of this game is free software
Its silly, really. Mane6 have been non-profit since their inception. They have declined numerous offers and chances to get money for their work, because they knew they would be shut down if they did.
And then Hasbro does it anyway. I really hope its someone posing as Hasbro or some shit.
he has all the girls

Seriously? I mean...seriously. Did you have to post a large picture with that? I am not 100% sure if your even serious here. More like trolling.....
of course hasbro doesn't want people making games about mlp, they want your money, they always wanted your fucking money, that's why every single thing they release comes with a toy/card game annexed to them. that's how they MAKE money to begin with.
the only reason they "support" the bronies thus far is because their fanaticism has brought them millions in advertising, merch and DVD sales. the SECOND they see that any part this whole fandom thing stops yielding them money they are gonna shoot it down.
Same thing happened with the Middle-Earth Skyrim Project. Warner Bros were dicks
